Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/16

CB Wilkins

Good offense across the board tonight with Gwinnett and Rome putting up enough to earn wins. Terdoslavich and Elander continue their hitting ways while Lynchburg and Mississippi surrender late leads.

Gwinnett Braves 6, Pawtucket Red Sox 4

  • Todd Cunningham CF - 3-4 2B(5), HR(2), 3 RBI(11), BB, .232 Avg
  • Tyler Pastornicky 2B - 3-5 RBI(10), K, .308 Avg
  • Joey Terdoslavich RF - 1-3, 2B(15), 3 BB, .335 Avg
  • Omar Poveda 8IP 7H 1R 1BB 3K 2.35 ERA

Gwinnett got out to a good lead behind the excellent start from Omar Poveda who scattered six base-runners through his first seven innings before allowing a single run to score in the eighth inning. The Braves got two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth which they would need when Wirfrin Obispo melted down and allowed three more runs in the bottom of the ninth before giving way to Cory Rasmus for the final out of the game. The Red Sox must have been really pitching around Terdoslavich in this one because the three walks they issued him nearly doubled his total for the year.

Huntsville Stars 5, Mississippi Braves 4

  • Mycal Jones CF - 1-4 HR(1), RBI(10), BB, K, .202 Avg
  • Jose Martinez RF - 1-4 HR(2), 2 RBI(22), BB, .297 Avg
  • Tommy La Stella 2B - SB(2), .350 Avg
  • Edward Salcedo 3B - 2-4 2 SB(9), K, .267 Avg
  • Aaron Northcraft 4.1IP 5H 3R 2ER 4BB 5K 4.11 ERA
Aaron Northcraft didn't have his best game in this one but Erik Hamren, Luis Ayala and Cole McCrurry held the Stars at bay for four innings and the Braves regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Unfortunately Pat Egan could not close the game out for the M-Braves and he gave up a two-run homer to give Huntsville the lead and the win.

Frederick Keys 11, Lynchburg Hillcats 7

  • Matt Lipka CF - 3-5 K, .277 Avg
  • Emerson Landoni 2B - 1-4 2B(3), RBI(6), BB, K, .355 Avg
  • Robby Hefflinger DH - 3-5 HR(9), RBI(27), K, .295 Avg
  • David Rohm LF - 1-4 2B(14), BB, .318 Avg
  • Elmer Reyes SS - 1-5 2 RBI(23), 2 K, .298 Avg

Only one pitcher in this game didn't give up a run. There were a total of 30 hits between the two teams, but the Hillcats committed four errors, threw six wild pitches and walked in two runs. Those kinds of things are just really hard to overcome. Matt Lipka continues his hot streak with his fourth straight multi-hit game which also pushed his OPS over .800 for the first time since god knows when.

Asheville Tourists 4, Rome Braves 11

  • Jose Peraza SS - 1-4 BB, K, SB(11), E(13), .266 Avg
  • Levi Hyams 2B - 3-5 2B(4), 2 RBI(10), .326 Avg
  • Josh Elander LF - 2-5 2 2B(13), 5 RBI(31), .315 Avg
  • Chase Anselment C - 3-5 2 2B(3), RBI(2), K, .290 Avg
  • Carlos Perez 2.1 IP 1H 0R 0BB 4K 1.50 ERA
There were some really awesome last names in this game: Peraza, Kalenkosy, Meneses, Anselment, Argyropoulos, Ciriaco, and Von Tungeln. Just awesome. Anyways, Josh Elander returned to the lineup tonight and pound out two doubles with 5 RBI which puts him in second in the Sally League in RBI. It was also a pretty nice night throughout the organization for second basemen and really it has been a great year in the minors for Braves second basemen. If only there weren't a fire hydrant shaped roadblock to the job in the majors.
