Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/15

Kyle Kubitza hit a walkoff homer for Lynchburg. - CB Wilkins

Kubitza's first homer of the season sends Lycnhburg home with a walk off homer. Mejia and Terdoslavich power a win for Gwinnett on the road. Mississippi rides the hot hand of Gus Schlosser and Rome's Peraza provides offense but his defense costs the team.

Gwinnett Braves 6, Pawtuckett Red Sox 4

  • Jose Constanza DH - 1-3 2 BB, SB(6), .261 Avg
  • Jason Heyward RF - 1-3 BB, K, .300 Avg
  • Ernesto Mejia 1B - 2-4 2B(8), HR(11), 4 RBI(29), E(6), .246 Avg
  • Joey Terdoslavich LF - 3-3 RBI(26), .333 Avg

Gwinnett starter Tim Corcoran gave up four runs in the first inning, but settled down and proceeded to retire 12 of the next 13 batters he faced. The Braves clawed their way back into the game scoring two runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to take the lead for good. Jason Heyward reached base twice and is hitting .300 with a .423 OBP in 20 AB.

Huntsville Stars 2, Mississippi Braves 6

  • Edward Salcedo 3B - 1-4 HR(3), RBI(15), BB, K, .260 Avg
  • Jose Martinez RF - 1-4 HR(1), RBI(20), .298 Avg
  • Gus Schlosser 6IP 4H 1R 0BB 4K 3.21 ERA
  • Juan Jaime 1IP 1H 0R 0BB 0K 0.00 ERA
  • Ian Thomas 2 IP 3H 1R 0BB 4K 1.16 ERA

J.R. Graham was placed on the DL today after exiting his last start with discomfort in his pitching arm. In Gus Schlosser's last five starts he has pitched 31.2 innings and allowed just four runs. He has given up just 19 hits and 8 walks during that span while striking out 26 batters. So far this season he is striking out about 4% less batters than last year (20.8 vs 16.8) and walking almost twice as many (4.9% last year to 9.4%) but he is allowing less hits and many more groundballs (up to 66% this season). His future with the organization isn't clear, but he is the kind of guy that will probably get a shot in the bullpen at the very least.

Frederick Keys 2, Lynchburg Hillcats 3

  • Matt Lipka CF - 2-4 RBI(23), .266 Avg
  • David Rohm RF - 1-4 2B(13), .320 Avg
  • Kyle Kubitza DH - 2-4 HR(1), 2 RBI(14), K, .225 Avg
  • A.J. Holland 6 IP, 3H 2R 5BB 3K 3.00 ERA

Lynchburg picked up the win after tying the game in the bottom of the eighth inning and then watching Kyle Kubitza hit a 2-out walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth. Matt Lipka continued to hit the ball really well. He has hit safely in nine of his last ten games and has three straight multi-hit games. He also has seven extra base hits in his last ten. His stat line this season is nearly identical to last season except in the power department: his ISO was .187 coming into tonight, almost triple his .065 from last year. Almost every other stat is near identical except for his strikeout rate which has jumped with his power.

Rome Braves 4, Augusta Greenjackets 5

  • Jose Peraza SS - 3-4 HR(1), 2 RBI(9), 2 E(12), .267 Avg
  • Levi Hyams 2B - 2-4 K, .310 Avg
  • Joey Meneses LF - 3-4 K, .250 Avg
  • Mauricio Cabrera 5.2IP 5H 4R 1ER 3BB 9K 2.98 ERA
  • Shae Simmons 1IP 1H 0 R 1BB 3K 1.59 ERA

Josh Elander sat this one out, so Jose Peraza had to be all the offense. He led off the game with his first home run of the season and collected two more hits and another RBI to lead the offensive attack. Unfortunately his errors in the first and sixth innings led to three unearned runs being scored. The Braves defense in general was pretty poor, committing three errors plus a passed ball on an inning-ending strikeout that instead loaded the bases. Mauricio Cabrera had his best strikeout game of the season, but his walks are still an issue.
