One crazy hit led to a weird third inning in Arizona, but that would be all D-backs starter Patrick Corbin would need, shutting out the Braves despite five walks by a score of 2-0.
The play in question can only be described as an infield double. With one on and one out in the third, Gerardo Parra bounced a chopper between the pitcher's mound and first base; Julio Teheran and Freddie Freeman converged, but neither laid any glove on the ball and as Dan Uggla was running to his left, the ball rolled past him and died just past the back edge of the infield. By the time Teheran recovered the ball, Parra was standing at second and Cliff Pennington, who led off the inning with a single, stood at third. Didi Gregorius then lined a single to center to score both runners.
Atlanta, though, had several opportunities to score. Corbin scattered five walks - a new high for him - in seven innings, but three double plays helped him out; those in the fourth and sixth innings were turned following leadoff walks to Evan Gattis and Reed Johnson, respectively. They were 0-4 with RISP and left seven on base.
Teheran was saddled with the loss, giving up seven hits in six innings.
To cap off the game, Atlanta couldn't muster a single run in the ninth against beleaguered reliever Heath Bell, who had given up eight runs in 6.1 innings at home this year.
Atlanta will try to win the series outright on Wednesday.
