Braves complete sweep of Cubs with 5-1 win

Scott Cunningham

After taking the first two games against the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta battled against right-hander Jeff Samardzija to plate four runs in his 5.2 innings of work en route to a 5-1 sweep clinching victory over the Cubs.

The Cubs struck early again, as David DeJesus doubled to lead off the game against Atlanta starter Tim Hudson. After a groundout advanced him to third, DeJesus scored on a groundout to first baseman Chris Johnson to make it a 1-0 game.

Samardzija, who had his way early with the Braves, struck out 13 batters in all, but ran into trouble in the fifth and sixth innings. Atlanta got on the board in the fifth as Ramiro Pena doubled to lead off the bottom of the frame, and then Samardzija walked Hudson to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch to B.J. Upton up to bat moved the runners up to second and third respectively. Another wild pitch would walk Upton and bring home Pena to tie things at one apiece.

With Dan Uggla on first in the bottom of the sixth and one out, Juan Francisco singled to center to put runners on first and third for Johnson. He was hit a Samardzija pitch to load the bases, and Pena singled to right to bring in both Uggla and Francisco to make it a 3-1 game.

At that point Chicago brought in Michael Bowden in relief, and he promptly gave up a single to Hudson that scored Johnson and upped Atlanta's advantage to 4-1.

Dan Uggla tagged on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with his second home run of the season to make it a 5-1 game. Hudson's final line was 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, and 7 K's. Luis Avilan and Jordan Walden combined to pitch the final 2.1 scoreless innings, striking out four (three by Walden in the ninth.)

** Apologies for the late recap, I got stuck at the Ole Miss/Vanderbilt game that turned into a ten-inning, four and a half hour marathon that saw the Commodores emerge victorious. **
