Tomahawk Chops: Jonny Venters injected with platelet-rich plasma in elbow

USA TODAY Sports

With hopes of avoiding Tommy John Surgery, Venters is trying something that will keep him out until at least the middle of May.

If there's been any real cause for concern with the Braves about 50 days since players began reporting to Spring Training, it's the injuries affecting the bullpen.

On Tuesday, Jonny Venters, who is currently on the 15-day disabled list, went and visited Dr. James Andrews to get his elbow checked out. Yes, that Dr. James Andrews.

There was good news and bad news. The good news is that Tommy John Surgery isn't needed ... yet. Instead, Andrews injected Venters with platelet-rich plasma in his left elbow, which has given him discomfort throughout the spring.

If all goes well, Venters could be back by late May. He will be out at least four weeks and then begin a throwing program. If he still isn't feeling right, it'll most likely be surgery time.

Big TV Numbers

As the post Chipper Jones era in Atlanta began on Monday, a ton of fans were watching. Not only was Turner Field sold out, but Fox Sports South also announced the season opener drew the highest ratings of any Braves game since 2000.

More than Chipper's last game, more than Heyward's debut, and more than any night a jersey number got retired.

This is going to be a fun year, and while it's easy to catch the boys at home on TV, it would really be nice to see a spike in attendance numbers at The Ted.

Halladay

Roy Halladay is scheduled to pitch Wednesday's game. In the past, this would be cause for you to stop reading, head to your neighborhood liquor shop and get something (or somethings) to be intoxicated for nine solid innings.

That may not be the case this year. Halladay looked awful in the spring after a pretty mediocre 2012 campaign, and scouts everywhere seem to be worried about his lack of movement and velocity. It will be interesting to see just how much he has left against the big boys in the Braves lineup.
