Tim Hudson will have to try again for win number 200.
Hudson's Braves were one out away from securing a milestone victory for him before nemesis Dexter Fowler tied the game in the ninth. The Rockies ultimately won the game in the 12th inning by a 6-5 score.
Colorado jumped on Hudson early with back-to-back home runs from Michael Cuddyer and Josh Rutledge in the second inning, but Atlanta leapfrogged into the lead in the fourth inning. Justin Upton led off the frame with a single off Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood and came around to score on Freddie Freeman's high-hit double to right that caromed off the base of the wall. One out later, Juan Francisco chased home Freeman for the second run. A single by Dan Uggla and a walk to Jordan Schafer loaded the bases for Hudson and he helped his own cause, ripping an RBI single to right to take a one-run lead.
The lead was short-lived. In the bottom of the fourth, Rockies third baseman Chris Nelson hit a two-out triple off the right field wall. An intentional walk brought the pitcher Chatwood to the plate, and he hit a bouncer high off the plate for an infield hit and game-tying RBI.
The score remained tied into the sixth. Evan Gattis led off with a double and scored on shortstop Jonathan Herrera's throwing error. Dan Uggla had beat out an infield hit and Herrera's throw sailed into the seats. Jordan Schafer singled home Uggla for a 5-3 lead.
Atlanta's top of the ninth turned out to be the turning point of the game. Jordan Schafer had drawn a leadoff walk against Rockies lefty Rex Brothers; a balk and a stolen base had him at third base with no outs. Reed Johnson couldn't bring him in, so it was up to Ramiro Pena. He attempted a squeeze bunt, but missed, and Schafer was stuck between third and home. The failed squeeze killed a potential insurance run, but Atlanta had Craig Kimbrel entering in the bottom of the ninth.
Kimbrel retired Jordan Pacheco to start the inning, but Jonathan Herrera doubled to right and pinch-hitter Troy Tulowitzki singled before Kimbrel struck out Eric Young swinging, leaving Dexter Fowler the lone obstacle between Kimbrel and a Braves win. On the very first pitch, Fowler hit a high drive to left field, but Justin Upton couldn't corral it and both runners scored. Kimbrel had blown his first save of the season and ended the inning with an angry strikeout of Wilin Rosario, sending the game to extra innings.
Atlanta snuffed out a Rockies rally in the 11th after Eric Young's one-out triple; good defense by Freeman and a solid block of home plate by Gattis kept Young from scoring. In the 12th, though, Wilin Rosario led off with a double off Luis Ayala and scored the winning run on Yorvit Torrealba's one-out single to left.
