Opening days rarely see perfection. The closest the Braves ever came was five days after opening day when Kent Merker no-hit the Dodgers -- he was the fifth starter that year, behind Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, and Avery. But opening day can see some perfect moments.
Opening day is when new players step onto the field for the first time in their new uniforms with new teams. Jason Heyward gave us a perfect moment on opening day in 2010 when he sent a blast over the right field wall in his very first at-bat in the big leagues. He did it again in 2011 on opening day.
With so many new Braves stepping onto the field for the first time tonight with a Tomahawk on their jersey, one has to think that there will be some perfect moments. It may not be the obvious players like Justin Upton or B.J. Upton. It may be the new CJ at third base, replacing the old CJ. It may be a pinch hitter of the White Bear persuasion.
A lot will be made about today's game -- probably too much. But it's the great exhale at the end of a long winter without baseball. It's finally here... it finally counts.
