Are you a Super Fan?

I just had a very enlightening conversation with a buddy of mine, (who by the way is a Philly fan) I was griping about the lack of moves by our FO where the Braves are concerned. I mentioned that some of my viewpoints were meeting with resentment and hostility, and he said the most amazing thing, "dude part of being a fan is being able to bitch about your team". I went on to say that it bugged the hell out of me that our team is good enough to get to the playoffs, but yet not be able to seal the deal. That it's the same thing season after season.

Now for me I've got 20 years of really bad teams, the 70s and 80s. Along with roughly 20+ years of really good teams, the 90s to present. Along the way I've learned one thing- whether they're good or bad, this is my team. Why you may ask, because I'm a super fan! Those of you reading this know what I'm talking about.

Now here's the funny thing I learned this morning. This team is not designed for the super fan (duh). It's designed for the casual fan that watches on TV and enjoys the game. In addition to the one who might be paying attention to the ads that are running throughout the game. You breathe each pitch, and hold your breaths waiting on the diving grab, and yell at the screen when one of your guys let a grounder go by. You know the typical things that one does during a game.

However for the super fan it's a different experience for us. We're not content with just that, we internalize the end result; we're reading the blogs and posting comments (even arguing amongst ourselves). We're scanning for every tidbit of info we can find during the offseason,we scour the minor league rosters looking for players, follow the trade deadline with updates from every source we can gather, and in some cases even getting up in the middle of the night to check the internet for new news (yes I've done that). We are the ones who put fanatic into fan.

So for us whatever movement or lack thereof the FO makes isn't going to be good enough for us. We want to win EVERY game, EVERY series, and even EVERY trade or FA signing! These is why for some of us we want more, and are not content to rest on what last year's team did. After all that was last year and that year is done. We want THIS year to be perfect and to win it all, even if it means arguing with each other over the process of how to get there.

After all isn't it the dream of every super fan- their team ends the season champions?
