I'm sure by now most of us have heard the news. Either through one of the media outlets or a friend at the coffee machine. The Nationals acquired Doug Fister from the Detroit Tigers for 3 players. Okay lets look at this- did the Nats just get better? YES with all of the mental drumbeats you can muster. Does this affect the Braves chances of repeating as NL East champs? It's definitely a factor but not the deciding one. Do the Braves HAVE to make a counter move? Ahh there lies the question.
Now many of you are already screaming at your computers that the Braves have got to go sign somebody quick to counter this move from the Nats. Okay STOP and take a breath, feel better? Hopefully but then for some of you, like me we live and bleed the Braves and this move from the Nats just made us all extremely nervous. Making a move just to make a move at this point is silly. All the other teams have just been put on alert that the Braves will be out there looking to make a deal, while trying to rake us over the coals in the process. So a little patience may be what's needed here, ( okay I don't do patience well either ) but a knee-jerk reaction to this could be worse in the future.
Do I think the team needs to acquire a front line starter? Yes if possible, but not at the expense of the team for years to come. Can we make the right deal? That should be the real question. Are there going to be guys made available from other teams? Yes at their price, which may be higher than the Braves are willing to go right now. The answer may not come as quickly as many of us would like either. It may be closer to the start of the season before anything can be done. Just because of the cost associated, in terms of prospects or price.
Who do we go after, if anyone? A FA or work a trade? I'm going to let you guys argue over that. I have my picks but I don't see any of them being really affordable for the Braves right now. To match the talent that the Nats just traded for, the Braves are going to have to go big or go home. Ex... Chris Sale or Hisashi Iwakuma as far as trades, or Ubaldo Jimenez or Ervin Santana maybe on the FA market would be good comparables in terms of talent. Which for this team with it's budget restrictions I just don't see happening. Unless other moves are made first to clear payroll space I don't see the Braves answering this move. What do you think they will do?
