Andrelton Simmons was awarded his first (of many) Gold Glove Awards last night, hopefully cementing his status as the best shortstop in the National League, if not the game.
Simmons had 41 defensive saved runs on the season, the highest number for a shortstop since the metric was first used. This year's voting process was the first to include ballots from experts on analytics and metrics.
Jason Heyward lost out to Gerardo Parra in what would've been his second straight award. We all saw how phenomenal he was in center and right field when he was healthy, but his large amount of time on the disabled list probably hurt his chances.
Additionally, Simmons is up for another award: MLBPAA Heart & Hustle Award, which is given to the player who embodies the spirit and values of baseball. Voting lasts until 4:00 p.m. ET on Nov. 4.
