Back when Justin Upton was acquired, I spoke against it.
I didn't think Chris Johnson would be worth a damn. I was wrong. Very wrong. He was worth 2.8 fWAR this season. And I thought Justin Upton, while an amazing talent, was inconsistent and not a lock for MVP caliber seasons. OK, I was kind of right there, but he was still solid. He carried us in multiple months, and finished the year with a 3.2 fWAR.
I didn't like the trade because I thought the idea of letting Gattis take LF full time, with Prado manning 3B full time, while Delgado and Spruill provided injury insurance to the rotation (or relief work in the bullpen), and Nick Ahmed and Brandon Drury continued to work their way up the ladders in the minors was a better value for the dollars than Johnson and J Up would be.
Gattis had good moments, but had long stretches of struggle, and probably would have been a bad idea full time in LF. Prado had a .282/.333/.417 slash line, 2.4 fWAR, .328 wOBA and 103 wRC+. Spruill had a decent season split between AA, AAA, and MLB. He got roughed up bad in both starts. Delgado had some good starts (including a complete game shutout), but mostly struggled this year (how would he have done in a relief role?). Ahmed had a nightmare season in AA, but Drury was back being a doubles machine (he stroked 51 for them in A ball, turning 21 in August).
But back to the point now that the word count is more than full. When the Upton trade went down, I didn't like it as much as many others. A bet developed naturally between myself and someguy1. Swainzy supplied the terms. The bet was for 7 fWAR combined between the two, but if I'm not mistaken (and I can't find the later comment thread that did so), but the bet was modified down to 6 fWAR and cthabeerman was added with someguy (am I forgetting anyone?). I was wrong, they were right. I'm dumb, and they're really smart. I'm ugly, they're reasonably attractive. I have halitosis, and they're minty fresh. I don't know what the hell I'm talking about, but Frank Wren clearly does and so do someguy and -C. I'm a loser. They're winners.
