The 2013 Braves' Jersey Numbers

Stay connected for news and updates

With the many trades, signings, and losses to this team over the offseason, I took a close look at the 40-man roster after having a discussion in one of the Justin Upton threads leading up to the trade, and saw the drastically different jersey number construction of this roster. So, without further delay, here are your 2013 Atlanta Braves (NOTE: Retired numbers and numbers of coaches are omitted):

 Tyler Pastornicky

 B.J. Upton

 Paul Janish

 Freddie Freeman

 Reed Johnson

 Justin Upton

 Gerald Laird

 Jose Constanza

 OPEN (sadly)

 Tim Hudson

 Brian McCann

 Jordan Schafer

 Andrelton Simmons

 OPEN

 Jason Heyward

 Chris Johnson

 OPEN

 Juan Francisco

 Dan Uggla

 Paul Maholm

 OPEN

 OPEN

 Eric O'Flaherty

 Mike Minor

 Brandon Beachy

 Anthony Varvaro

 Jonny Venters

 OPEN

 Luis Avilan

 Craig Kimbrel

 OPEN

 Julio Teheran

 Cristhian Martinez

 Jordan Walden

 Cory Gearrin

 Kris Medlen

 Christian Bethancourt

 Ernesto Mejia

 OPEN

 David Carpenter

 David Hale

 Juan Jaime

 Aaron Northcraft

There is one notable addition yet to be determined: Chris Johnson. Johnson wore #28 with the Astros and the Diamondbacks, however there is a weird situation surrounding it. Originally, hitting coach Greg Walker wore #28. However, the 40-man roster shows Walker with #27 and Paul Maholm with #28. One quick, easy way to fix this is give Johnson an open spot, such as 20, 23, 24, or 30. The other way is to revert things back to the way as they were before: Give Walker #28, keep Maholm at #17, give Johnson #28, and move Schafer to #20, #23, or #24.

Notable changes include Reed Johnson going from #11 to #7, Julio Teheran taking #49 after using #57 and #27 in his brief Major League stints, and Gerald Laird taking #11.

Update: I found a tweet from the Twitter account of Chris Johnson, with a picture enclosed:

However, Johnson will need to put a "C." before it, since there is another player with that last name, Reed Johnson. By my count, it should be the first time since 2007 that this has happened, the last being Andruw Jones's last year with Atlanta with Chipper also on the club.
