Braves avoid arbitration with five, Prado still unsigned

Kevin C. Cox

The Braves entered Friday morning with six arbitration eligible players, and the team has come to terms on one-year deals for five of those six players.

Eric O' Flaherty, Jonny Venters, Jason Heyward, Kris Medlen, and Cristhian Martinez are the five that agreed to terms on one-year deals with the Braves, avoiding an arbitration hearing.

Third baseman/left fielder Martin Prado is the only Braves player that remains unsigned. According to a tweet from CBS Sport's Jon Heyman, the Braves filed at $6.65M, while Prado filed at $7.05M.

If the team and Prado cannot agree on a number in what is his final arbitration year, there will be a hearing in February to determine his salary for the 2013 season.

Atlanta has not had to go to an arbitration hearing with a player since it did with John Rocker in 2001.

In his final year of arbitration, O'Flaherty will earn $4.32 M, which includes award bonuses. The left-handed, who will be a free agent after this year, is coming off of a productive 2012 in which he posted a 1.73 ERA, 3.27 FIP, and held left-handed hitters to a .305 OPS.

Venters, who was eligible for arbitration for the first time this year, will earn $1.625M in 2013.

Also a first time arbitration eligible player, Heyward will make $3.65M in 2013 after a 2012 season that saw the 23-year old win a Gold Glove for his defense in right field while also putting together a 20-20 season at the plate. His deal also includes awards bonuses.

Medlen's breakout 2012 season earned him $2.6 M for 2013 in what was his first arbitration year as well. The right-hander posted a 1.57 ERA, 2.42 FIP, and was worth almost four wins above replacement according to Fangraphs.

The terms of Martinez's deal aren't available at this point.
