Dodgers Sign Longtime Braves Reliever Peter Moylan

Longtime Braves reliever heads West.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed right-handed relief pitcher Peter Moylan to a minor league contract. Moylan leaves the Atlanta Braves organization after seven years. He was originally a part of the Twins organization, and was out of American baseball for almost a decade. The Braves signed him after seeing his performance in the World Baseball Classic in 2006.

As one of the longest tenured members of the Braves bullpen, Moylan compiled a 2.59 ERA and a 1.285 WHIP during his seven seasons in a Braves uniform. He was never much of a strikeout pitcher, he was instead usually referred to as the Braves ground ball specialist, because of his ability to induce ground balls.

I'm actually a little miffed that the Dodgers only had to sign him to a minor league deal. I would have thought the Braves could have used him in their bullpen (and in their clubhouse), and all it took was a minor league deal? I wonder what the hangup was. Perhaps it was Moylan or his agent's view of a clear path to win a spot in spring training. Perhaps LA offered more incentives if he made the Major League squad.

Oh well, one of the great personalities on the Braves has moved on. But you can bet that I'll still follow him on Twitter @PeterMoylan. And we'll always remember that Chicks Dig The Ground Ball.
