Smoltz and using a no. 3 starter for the 1 game playoff
Surely some of you are familiar with his argument, I just want to see how yall feel about it. He is saying we should save our aces in the 1 game playoff so they can start games 1 and 2 of the division series at home. His rational is that the strategy should be oriented towards winning the WS and not merely getting deeper into the playoffs. The counter argument though, is that whether Hudson or Medlen start in the 1 game playoff or not, only one will be able to start two games in the division series. If one starts the 1Gplayoff, they will each start 2 games in these first two rounds (+ 1 more home game than Smoltz' scenario). Also, assuming we face the cardinals, they hit LHPitching better than RHPitching, so we would likely be starting Hanson if not Medlen or Hudson, and I don't like that idea. I would start Hudson in the 1game playoff unless he is shaky in his last couple starts. I feel like Hudson thrives under that kind of pressure, and Medlen could thrive in game 1 of the NLDS. It would also set us up to alternate Lefty and righty starters against (assuming) the Nationals, who are pretty even against pitching from both sides.
