Lynchburg Hillcats broadcaster Mike Viso recently had a chance to sit down with Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons, while Simmons was on a rehab assignment in the minor leagues. Here is what Simba had to say about Chipper Jones:
Chipper [Jones] is one cool guy. He is just calm as a cucumber, he doesn't panic, ever. He's always calm; he always knows what to do. It's pretty cool being around that type of person when you're in a situations where you don't know what to do, you can always go to him and ask him for advice. He will always guide you through those moments.
Great stuff right there from Simmons. He has some more great answers in the Q&A, including his superstitious undershirts. It's great candor for a young player, and the kind of interview that I really enjoy.
This quote above also reminds us of what else we'll miss when Chipper retires at this season's end. Not only does the Old Battle Axe have the best OPS on the team, but the intangibles of being a respected veteran in a clubhouse of young players is an invaluable asset to the team. Chipper is, for all intents and purposes, the Caption of the Braves, even if he doesn't wear a "C" on he front of his jersey.
