Ugly Seventh Inning Leads To Atlanta's 4-1 Loss To Brewers

The Monday bug bit the Braves again.

A normally reliable bullpen wasted another solid outing by Mike Minor with an unsightly seventh inning as Atlanta dropped the first game of their series against the Brewers 4-1.

The game was scoreless through four innings, but Atlanta pushed across a run in the fifth against rookie Wily Peralta. Dan Uggla led off with a single and advanced to third on a hit-and-run single by Brian McCann. A double play grounder by Andrelton Simmons was hit weak enough to allow Uggla to score the first run of the game.

Minor fought through five innings, allowing only two hits and walking two while striking out seven Brewers, but had to throw 99 pitches in that span because of countless foul balls. He was relieved after striking out Ryan Braun looking for the second out of the sixth.

Atlanta loaded the bases on two walks and a single in the seventh against reliever Jose Veras, but Michael Bourn popped up to end the inning. That turned out to be the turning point in the game.

Following a leadoff single and a walk with no out in the bottom of the seventh, Jonny Venters fielded Jeff Bianchi's sacrifice bunt and instead of taking the out at first, threw wide of third base to allow the tying run to score. Chad Durbin entered the game and immediately walked pinch-hitter Jonathan Lucroy to load the bases and then gave up a two-run double to Norichika Aoki. Carlos Gomez's sacrifice fly made the score 4-1 and that's how the game would end.

Four Braves were thrown out on the base paths; Martin Prado twice was thrown out at third base running from first on base hits. Freddie Freeman was picked off first base in the fourth and Jason Heyward was caught stealing second base in the first.
