The Braves offense turned in another lackluster performance. Atlanta left five on base against Cliff Lee, six total, and the team's only run came via homer as they drop the second game of the series to the Phillies 5-1.
Tim Hudson, as he often does, had trouble escaping the first inning unscathed. John Mayberry singled to center with two outs - Reed Johnson trapped the ball - to score Juan Pierre from second. Jimmy Rollins added to Hudson's misery with a home run to right that hit the foul pole leading off the third.
In the fifth, Juan Pierre singled with two outs and scored easily on Chase Utley's double, but Hudson's outing really went south in the sixth. Laynce Nix led off the inning with a weak single to center. After another single, Erik Kratz reached on a ground ball that didn't even pass the pitcher's mound. With the bases loaded and no outs, Hudson amazingly walked his counterpart Lee to force in a fourth run. Luis Avilan entered the game at that point, but another run crossed the plate when the defense couldn't turn a double play on Ty Wigginton.
Atlanta actually managed to load the bases against Lee in the sixth with two outs on singles by Jason Heyward and Chipper Jones then a walk to Freddie Freeman, but to no one's surprise considering the recent offense, a pop-up ended the inning. Brian McCann stranded six by himself.
Martin Prado spared the Braves a shutout with a home run off B.J. Rosenberg leading off the bottom of the eighth, Atlanta's only extra-base hit. Braves hitters managed only five singles against Lee in seven innings.
Jeff Baker struck out in his Braves debut in the seventh. Peter Moylan had a perfect eighth inning of relief.
