Gattis Returns, Cunningham, Beckwith, And Mueller Stay Hot, And Lee And Espinosa Dominate In Wednesday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

William Beckwith drove in all 4 of Rome's runs tonight.

Todd Cunningham, Christian Bethancourt, and Joey Terdoslavich combined for a potent top-of-the order attack for Mississippi, Mike Lee dominated for the Hillcats, William Beckwith and Tony Mueller stayed hot for Rome, Abraham Espinosa dominated for the GCL in a game where Evan Gattis played for the first time in two months.

Gwinnett Braves 8, Durham Bulls 16

Jose Lugo was absolutely shelled, as the 28 year old left allowed 4 earned runs while recording just 2 outs. In his last 2 starts, he's allowed 12 earned runs in just 3 innings of work. Things got so bad that shortstop Josh Wilson, who had 2 walks in 4 plate appearances, was forced to pitch, tossing a scoreless inning. It was his second appearance as a pitcher this year, and the fifth of his 14 year career. Stefan Gartrell had a 3 hit day that included his fifteenth homer of the year. During his 5 game hitting streak, he's gone 10-20 with 2 doubles, 2 homers, 8 RBI, and 3 walks. In his last 5 games, Terry Tiffee has gone 7-19 with a double and 2 RBI. Evan Gattis returned to action for the first time since injuring his wrist in May, rapping out a pair of singles in 2 at bats. The 25 year old, who's still in the process of learning how to play left field after beginning his career as a catcher, will play a few games in the GCL before returning to Mississippi. He was having a great year before his injury, hitting .336 with a 1.131 OPS, 12 doubles, 13 homers, and 43 RBI in 140 at bats between Lynchburg and Mississippi. After going 2-13 in his last 5 games, Tyler Tewell was 2-4 today. In his last 4 games, Seth Moranda has gone 6-16. Abraham Espinosa picked up his first win of the year by striking out 5 over 6 shutout innings. In his last 4 appearances, the 19 year old Panamanian has allowed 3 earned runs, 10 hits, 4 walks, and struck out 16 in 17 innings. Richie Tate had allowed 6 earned runs in just 2.1 innings in his last 2 appearances, but he tossed 2 scoreless innings today. Patrick Scoggin, a 21 year old righty out of Virginia Tech that the Braves signed as an undrafted free agent, made his professional debut today, picking up the save with a scoreless inning of work.
