The latest on the never ending rumors that the Atlanta Braves are trying to trade for a starting pitcher. Here's Jayson Stark on the matter:
#Braves also don't appear to be aggressively pursuing Dempster. Still prefer a high-end starter they can keep beyond this year.— Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) July 20, 2012
No one outside of the Braves front office seems to have any idea what's going on, which, I guess is how is should be. The best I can figure, the price on the one-year rentals is too high, and Atlanta is staying away for now. That means trading for a pitcher they would control beyond this season. They probably figure that if the price is high for a one-year rental, then they might as well throw in another prospect or two and get a guy who will be around longer. That gives them more time to sign him, and failing that allows them to get something in return later on, either another trade or draft picks.
But again, all we can do is guess. The latest reports from the Cubs camp on Dempster is that they want to trade him sooner rather than later. I guess they figure this terrific run he's on can't last, and they might as well trade him while his value is at its absolute highest.
