Hale, Cabrera, And Merejo Shine On The Mound While Mueller And Elander Notch Three-Hit Games In Friday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

Gwinnett Braves 4, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 11

  • Christian Marrero, 1B: 3-4, 2B, RBI, .254
  • Jose Constanza, LF: 3-5, .297
  • Jose Lugo, SP: 3.1 IP, 6 H, 9 R, 5 BB, 4 K, 5.77 ERA
Gwinnett got whipped tonight for their fourteenth loss in a row. That's right, the G-Braves haven't won a game in over 2 weeks. Poor pitching was the culprit tonight, as Jose Lugo and the Gwinnett pen got bombed by the SWB Yanks. Lugo only lasted 3.1 innings, giving up a whopping 9 runs on 6 hits and 5 walks. He did manage to strike out 4, but tonight's start swelled his ERA all the way up to 5.77. Christian Marrero and Jose Constanza each managed 3 hits, but the offense wasn't up to coming back from so far down.

Gwinnett opens a series with the Charlotte Knights tomorrow, probables TBA.
Chattanooga Lookouts 1, Mississippi Braves 0
David Hale dominated for his third straight start, but Mississippi lost late on a tie-breaking homer (sound familiar?). Hale went 7 innings, allowing only 4 hits and 3 walks. He only struck out 4, but didn't allow a single run. In his last 22 innings, Hale has only allowed 1 run on 14 hits and 3 walks. Joe Leonard was the only Brave to record a multi-hit game, going 2-4 on the evening. Phil Gosselin hit his 18th double of the year on a 1-4 evening.

Sean Gilmartin looks for his 6th win tomorrow for Mississippi.

Lynchburg HIllcats 0, Wilmington Blue Rocks 3
  • David Rohm, RF: 2-3, 2B, .219
  • Chris Garcia, DH: 1-4, .306
  • Dimasther Delgado, SP: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 4 K, 3.55 ERA
  • Ryne Harper, RP: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 0.84 ERA
Dimasther Delgado had a decent start for Lynchburg tonight, but the defense behind him let him down. A pair of Hillcat errors led to 2 unearned runs, otherwise Delgado put up a good line. He went 6.2 innings, allowing only 1 earned run on 5 hits and 0 walks while striking out 4. Ryne Harper came out of the pen to throw 1.1 perfect innings while whiffing half the men he faced. On the offensive side, there's not much to say. Lynchburg managed 3 hits on the day, two from David Rohm and one from Chris Garcia.

Gus Schlosser looks to build on his recent success going for his 9th win tomorrow.

Kannapolis Intimidators 9, Rome Braves 11
  • Tony Mueller, CF: 3-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, .279
  • Kyle Kubitza, DH: 2-5, R, .255
  • Will Skinner, RF: 2-5, 2 R, RBI, .266
  • William Beckwith, 1B: 2-5, 2B, 2 RBI, .298
  • Brandon Drury, 3B: 2-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, .202
  • Elmer Reyes, SS: 1-3, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, .249
  • David Filak, SP: 5 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 4.91 ERA
  • David Peterson, RP: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 0.00 ERA
Rome won a slugfest tonight thanks to a balanced contribution from the whole lineup. Tony Mueller had a 3 hit game, scoring twice and driving in two. Elmer Reyes notched 2 runs and 2 RBI as well, along with his 4th triple of the year. Will Skinner, William Beckwith, Brandon Drury, and Kyle Kubitza all notched 2-hit days as well. It was a big day for Brandon Drury, who *finally* got his average up over the Mendoza line when he drove in the game winning run after a long at-bat. Drury, who has been nothing short of disastrous this year, now has a modest 5 game hit streak going, during which he is 8-16. Maybe he is finally starting to make adjustments. David Filak had a pretty awful start, allowing 6 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings, but the offense bailed him out in a big way.

Alex Wood makes his 2nd pro start for Rome tomorrow after throwing 2 scoreless innings in his debut.

Danville Braves 6, Greenville Astros 2 - 17 Innings
  • Josh Elander, C: 3-5, 2 2B, BB, .333
  • Felix Marte, LF: 2-7, RBI, BB, SB(3), .438
  • Aris Alcantara, 1B: 2-7, 2B, 3B, 2 R, BB, .267
  • Mauricio Cabrera, SP: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K, 1.29 ERA
Danville beat Greenville in a 17 inning marathon tonight that saw both teams score once in the 16th before Danville took the lead for good in the 17th. Josh Elander, despite not starting, led the way with 3 hits - including two doubles - and a walk. Felix Marte and Aris Alcantara each had a pair as well. Marte also walked and stole his 3rd base of the year, while Alcantara's hits both went for extra bases. The story of the game for Danville was Mauricio Cabrera though. Cabrera, Atlanta's top international free agent from last year, tossed a gem, allowing only 1 hit across 6 innings. He whiffed a half-dozen while not walking a single man. Across 3 starts for Danville so far this year, Cabrera has thrown 14 innings and only allowed 7 hits. He's walked 4 and whiffed 12 in that same time.

Danville takes on Greenville again tomorrow, probables TBA.

GCL Braves 3, GCL Yankees 6
  • Jackson Laumann, 1B: 2-4, 2B, .269
  • Luis Madrid, 2B: 2-3, 2B, R, .250
  • Joey Meneses, LF: 1-3, 3B, .242
  • Jose Pereza, DH: 1-4, 3B, 2 R, RBI, .382
  • Luis Merejo, SP: 5 IP, 2 H, 2 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 7 K, 3.00 ERA
Luis Merejo had a good outing for the GCL Braves today, allowing only 1 earned run on 2 hits over 5 innings to the GCL Yanks. He didn't walk a man and whiffed 7 in the process. So far, in 15 innings this year, Merejo has whiffed 20 men. Jose Pereza kept showing off his legs, chugging out his 2nd triple of the young GCL season. Jackson Laumann and Luis Madrid each had two-hit days with a double, and Joey Meneses also hit his 2nd triple on the year.

The GCL Braves take on the Yanks again tomorrow, probables TBA.
