Jair Jurrjens was obliterated again today, Ernesto Mejia kept on hammering baseballs, Navery Moore posted a quality start, and William Beckwith had a perfect day at the plate.
Charlotte Knights 10, Gwinnett Braves 3
- Ernesto Mejia, DH: 3-4, R, .323
- Felix Pie, RF: 2-4, R, RBI, .271
- Tyler Pastornicky, SS: 1-5, R, SB(1), .200
- Jair Jurrjens, SP: 4.2 IP, 12 H, 10 R (6 ER), 2 BB, 0 K, 5.56 ERA
- Jose Lugo, RP: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 3.38 ERA
Jair Jurrjens has been ridiculously streaky so far in AAA. After throwing 8 innings of 3-hit shutout ball in his last outing, Jurrjens was strafed by the Charlotte Knights this evening, giving up 6 earned runs on 12 hits and 2 walks in 4.2 innings pitched. Perhaps the most disturbing thing about today's start was the fact that Jurrjens didn't strike out a batter and gave up 3 home runs. JJ now sports a 5.56 ERA in 43.2 minor league innings, and has allowed 6 home runs over that span. Ernesto Mejia keeps on hitting however, going 3 for 4 at the plate and scoring a run, bringing his average up to a very impressive .323 on the year. Felix Pie had his 2nd multi-hit game in as many tries, and Tyler Pastornicky, making his G-Braves debut, went 1-5 with a steal and a run.
Kris Medlen makes his first start tomorrow for Gwinnett in an effort to get stretched out to start at the major league level.
Montgomery Biscuits 9, Mississippi Braves 1
- Keenan Wiley, RF: 1-4, 2B, R, .286
- Barrett Kleinknecht, C: 1-1, 2B, BB, SB(2), .194
- Phil Gosselin, 2B: 1-3, BB, SB(8), .263
- David Hale, SP: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 7 BB, 3 K, 4.94 ERA
- Chris Jones, RP: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 2.91 ERA
Bad David Hale showed up tonight for Mississippi, issuing 7 walks over 3.2 innings on his way to a 6-run outing. Hale was incredibly wild and hittable as will, allowing 5 over his brief start. He immediately put Mississippi in a hole that the offense could not climb out off. The offense was actually pretty offensive as well, being 4 hit over the course of 9 innings. Super utility man Barrett Kleinknecht replaced Bethancourt mid-game at catcher and went 1-1 with a double, walk, and a steal. No word as of yet why Bethancourt came out of the game. Phil Gosselin was the only other Brave to reach base more than once, going 1-3 with a walk and his 8th steal of the year.
Zeke Spruill goes tomorrow for Mississippi.
Lynchburg Hillcats - Postponed
Lynchburg was caught in the same storm cell the big league club was, and was rained out. They will make it up as part of a doubleheader tomorrow.
Rome Braves 1, Lexington Legends 4
- William Beckwith, 1B: 3-3, 2B, R, BB, SB(3), .327
- Brandon Drury, DH: 1-4, 2B, RBI, .173
- Sergio Miranda, 2B: 0-2, 2 BB, SB(1), .204
- Navery Moore, SP: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 6 K, 3.25 ERA
William Beckwith had a banner day for Rome, reaching in all 4 of his plate appearances with a walk, 2 singles, and a double. He scored Rome's only run and also stole his third base of the year. Unfortunately, despite his 3 hits, the entire rest of Rome's roster could only muster 3 hits collectively. Navery Moore pitched well for Rome, allowing only 2 runs on 6 hits across 6 innings. More impressively, he struck out 6 while not walking a single man. Moore's transition to the rotation has actually been a pleasant surprise for Rome so far, allowing three earned runs or less in all but one of his 9 starts so far this year. He's also done a great job of improving his control, as he's only allowed 5 walks in his last 30.1 innings. He's struck out 20 over that same span.
Greg Ross gets the nod for Rome tomorrow against the Legends.
