Braves Place Beachy On DL, Call Up Redmond; Jurrjens To Start Friday

At 27-years old, Todd Redmond finally gets his shot in the Major Leagues.

The news this morning about Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Brandon Beachy was not quite as bad as I had feared. The team now reports that the injury is likely bone spurs, but they won't know for sure until after an MRI on Monday. The injury, though, is still severe enough that the Braves went ahead and placed Beachy on the 15-day disabled list.

That opening on the 25-man roster created an opportunity for right-handed pitcher Todd Redmond. The 27-year old right-hander has toiled away at triple-A for the Braves organization the last four seasons, and he finally gets his chance at the big league level.

Redmond is not a hard thrower, instead he's a guy who changes speeds well, locates the ball well and throws strikes. He's a durable pitcher, equally effective against lefties and righties, who will likely be used as a long reliever while he is with the big club. He will probably only be here for a week, as the Braves also announced today that Jair Jurrjens will be recalled this Friday to start in place of Beachy.

I had speculated yesterday that Kris Medlen could be the guy who takes over for Beachy, as Meds is recently stretched out and ready for a starter's role, but the team must feel that Medlen is needed more in the bullpen.

Updating other news from yesterday, we reported that Julio Teheran exited yesterday's start at Gwinnett after four innings and only 86 pitches. According to the Braves, Teheran was removed because of back stiffness. So more good news there, as nothing is wrong with his arm. Now we just need to keep our fingers crossed that Beachy's MRI comes back with good news, and that he will be able to return to the rotation soon.

To replace Redmond in Gwinnett, the Braves promoted reliever Billy Bullock from Mississippi, and promoted Andrew Wilson from Lynchburg to Mississippi. Newly acquired lefty Cole McCurry takes Wilson's spot in Lynchburg.
