Braves Offense Fails, McCann Robbed In Shutout Loss To Yankees

Several words came to mind when seeing this; none of them of the PG variety.

Brian McCann needs a hug.

Nick Swisher robbed McCann of a fourth-inning home run, and Braves hitters struggled to capitalize on several leadoff base runners against Ivan Nova in seven innings of their 3-0 loss to the Yankees.

Randall Delgado fell behind early when Robinson Cano singled home Alex Rodriguez, who had doubled with two outs, in the first inning. In the second, he hung a curveball to Raul Ibanez leading off the inning and the outfielder belted it for a home run for a 2-0 lead.

In the third, however, Delgado started walking hitters. He issued two walks with a double in between to load the bases. With Nick Swisher batting, Delgado flung a wild pitch, allowing Rodriguez to score from third. Delgado walked six Yankees over three innings and departed after the fifth while also striking out five.

Entering this game, opposing hitters hit .297 against Nova in his previous 11 starts, and .306 away from New York this year. Braves hitters, however, managed only five singles against Nova with four of them leading off an inning. He struck out six in seven innings and received some help from Nick Swisher in right field, robbing Brian McCann of what would have been his eighth home run of the year. Nova is now 11-0 in his last 14 road starts.

Cory Gearrin made his season debut, throwing two scoreless innings thanks to a pair of double plays and a nice catch by Michael Bourn in the seventh.

Someday, eventually, the Braves will win on a Monday. They are now 0-9 this year.
