Uggla's Hit Gives Braves 3-1 Win Over Cubs

Randall Delgado and Ryan Dempster both pitched wonderfully, but it was Dan Uggla who provided the heroics late in a 3-1 victory for the Braves over the Cubs.

Dempster brought an MLB-best 0.95 ERA into his start against the Braves, a team that had historically given him all sorts of grief, while Delgado was facing the Cubs for the first time. Both pitchers matched zeros through four innings, but Atlanta struck for a run in the fifth when Jason Heyward led off with a triple and scored on Tyler Pastornicky's sacrifice fly.

Delgado held the Cubs to one hit through five innings while issuing three walks. He was one out and one strike away from escaping trouble in the sixth, but Alfonso Soriano smacked a game-tying double to chase him from the game. Ryan Dempster was gone after seven innings; he struck out seven and gave up six hits.

Kerry Wood relieved Dempster in the eighth and immediately ran into trouble. After allowing a leadoff hit to Michael Bourn, he walked Martin Prado and Brian McCann to load the bases for Dan Uggla. Already with two hits in the game, Uggla stroked his third hit to center, scoring a pair. McCann was picked off second to end the chaotic inning for Wood, who chucked his glove and cap into the crowd in disgust as he walked off the field.

Atlanta turned a nice double play in the eighth to snuff out a Cubs threat, and Craig Kimbrel struck out two in the ninth for his tenth save.

Kris Medlen earned the win, his first since July 2010, with a scoreless seventh inning.
