Hudson Pitches Well In Rehab, Hale Dominates, And Gattis Keeps Raking In Wednesday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

Tim Hudson turned in 5 solid innings in a rehab outing with Gwinnett, David Hale pitched 7 innings of 2-hit ball, Lynchburg's offense lit it up again, and A.J. Holland was strong in a losing effort for Rome.

Norfolk Tides 1, Gwinnett Braves 4

  • Drew Sutton, 2B: 2-3, R, .267
  • Josh Wilson, SS: 2-4, RBI, SB(3), E(2), .256
  • Ernesto Mejia, 1B: 1-4, 2B, 3 RBI, .306
  • Tim Hudson, SP: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, W(1-0), 0.00 ERA
  • Dusty Hughes, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, H(1), 1.04 ERA
  • Cory Gearrin, RP: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, S(2), 0.00 ERA
Tim Hudson took the mound tonight in a rehab start and looks to be just about ready to go for the big league club. Huddy pitched 5 innings of 2 hit ball, allowing one unearned run on an error by Josh Wilson. He was a little wild, walking 3 Tides batters, but managed to strike out four as well. Ernesto Mejia opened the scoring with a bases-clearing three run double in the first, which was all the offense that Hudson and the bullpen needed. Cory Gearrin came on in the 8th for the four-out save. This was the first time Gearrin had not gone 2 innings in an appearance this year. On the season, he's now thrown 11.1 innings, giving up 9 hits, 2 walks, and fanning 13. He still hasn't been scored on.

Eric Junge gets the start for Gwinnett tomorrow in the series finale with Norfolk.

Mississippi Braves 3, Jackson Generals 2

  • Adam Milligan, DH: 3-4, 2B, RBI, .231
  • Ian Gac, 1B: 1-4, 2 RBI, .358
  • Mycal Jones, CF: 1-4, SB(2), OF Assist, .143
  • David Hale, SP: 7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, W(2-1), 3.68 ERA
  • Cory Rasmus, RP: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, S(1), 1.13 ERA
After managing just six hits in their last two games, the M-Braves were finally able to put together some offense. Oft-injured Adam Milligan had a three hit day and 8 of the 9 M-Braves recorded hits on the evening. Myke Jones, who had been scuffling at the plate, was dropped to 9th in the order and responded by stealing a bag and cutting down the potential tying run at the plate. Hopefully that's the spark he needs to get going. The big story out of Mississippi though was David Hale. The young righty took a no-hitter into the 5th inning until it was broken up by Francisco Martinez. Martinez's double snapped a string of 10.1 no-hit innings for Hale. Hale dominated the Generals over 7 innings, allowing only 2 hits and an unearned run, while striking out a half-dozen. After a horrific start to his season, Hale has posted back to back dominant starts allowing just 2 hits over 13 innings while walking 4 and striking out 11. Cory Rasmus went 2 innings for the save, and was scored on for only the first time all year. On the season, he now has an 8/1 K/BB ratio in 8 innings of work to go along with a 1.13 ERA.

Chris Masters faces off against top prospect Danny Hultzen tomorrow in the series finale.

Lynchburg Hillcats 11, Salem Red Sox 9
  • Evan Gattis, DH: 2-5, HR(4), 3 RBI, 2 R, .429
  • Edward Salcedo, 3B: 2-4, 2B, RBI, 2 R, BB, 2 E(3, 4), .348
  • Matt Weaver, 2B: 3-4, HR(1), 2B, RBI, 2 R, .750
  • Nick Ahmed, SS: 2-4, RBI, 3 R, BB, .319
  • Ryan Weber, RP: 2 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, H(3), 2.57 ERA
  • Juan Jaime, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, S(2), 0.00 ERA
The Hillcats' offense was firing on all cylinders tonight, as Lynchburg pounded out 11 runs on 13 hits. Matt Weaver made his 2012 debut with Lynchburg a memorable one, going 3-4 with a homer and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Evan Gattis, fresh off being named the Carolina League Player of the Week, smashed his 4th homer of the year in the 5th inning, and in his last 7 games the catcher/DH is batting .461 with 3 doubles, 4 homers, and 15 RBI. Gattis currently leads the Carolina League in average, slugging, RBIs, and homers. Can you say "en fuego"? Edward Salcedo had a great day at the plate as well, rapping out a single, a double, and taking a walk. Nick Ahmed continued his hot hitting, banging out two singles, taking a walk, and scoring three times. Ronan Pacheco started and had a rough outing, getting tagged for 7 runs (only 3 earned) in 3.2 innings.

J.R. Graham toes the rubber tomorrow night as the Hillcats open a series with the Frederick Keys.

Savannah Sand Gnats 4, Rome Braves 3 (Game 1)
  • Chase Larsson, DH: 1-1, 2B, R, BB, SB(1), .303
  • Elmer Reyes, SS: 2-4, R, .239
  • Navery Moore, SP: 3 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 5.00 ERA
  • Clint Wright, RP: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 0.00 ERA
This was the continuation of the game from last night that was suspended due to power failure. Chase Larsson played DH last night, doubling and walking in his only two plate appearances. He also swiped his first base of the year. Larsson already has 5 extra base hits through 11 games this year, but more impressive has been his plate discipline: he's walked 8 times in those 11 games (and only struck out 8 as well). Navery Moore started the game wild and couldn't recover, allowing 3 free passes in just 3 innings of work. Clint Wright made his R-Braves debut at the end of the game, and was the only Braves pitcher to not give up a run, allowing only 1 hit in 2 innings of work.

Savannah Sand Gnats 2, Rome Braves 0 (Game 2 - 7 innings)
  • Edison Sanchez, LF: 1-2, BB, .143
  • A.J. Holland, SP: 7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, L(1-2), 1.37 ERA
A very forgettable nightcap for Rome, as they were only able to muster 3 singles and a walk in seven innings of work. Edison Sanchez was the only Brave to reach base more than once. A.J. Holland actually had a very solid outing, pitching a complete game in the loss. Holland gave up 7 hits and 2 walks in the 7 inning game and wasn't able to strike anyone out, but somehow managed to only allow 2 runs. Holland has now started 3 games and pitched well in all 3, giving up a total of 3 runs across 19.2 innings of work, while only allowing 16 hits. Not too shabby.

Carlos Perez gets the ball tomorrow as the R-Braves open up a series with the Asheville Tourists.
