So I mess around with this PC Baseball Sim called Out of the Park Baseball (awesome for anyone who wants endless options in simulating/managing baseball seasons) and I got bored today and decided to start a league comprised solely of teams made from homegrown talent. So I dumped the whole league into the free agent pool, turned off financials and trades and started with the Braves. I knew the Braves had a good run on player development (I mean I've obviously been following the minors for a while) but wow look at the team we would put together:
Starting Pitchers:
Adam Wainwright, Tommy Hanson, Brandon Beachy, Mike Minor, Matt Harrison, Jason Marquis, Kevin Millwood, Randall Delgado, Julio Teheran, Charlie Morton, Bruce Chen
Relivers:
Venters, Kimbrel, Neftali Feliz, Matt Belisle,
C: McCann, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Tyler Flowers, Brayan Pena,
1B: Freddie Freeman, Adam Laroche, Garrett Jones
2B: Prado, Kelly Johnson
SS: Elvis Andrus, Yunel Escobar, Rafael Furcal,
3B: Chipper Jones, Mark DeRosa, Wilson Betemit
OF: Jason Heyward, Jordan Schafer, Jeff Francoeur, Andruw Jones
That is a pretty damn good team with a lot of versatility and depth. Surprisingly the rotation is a little suspect though Wainwright and Hanson at the top is deadly if they can be relied on to stay healthy. The Catching corps is very good as well. The most impressive group are the shortstops with three former All Stars, though none are still Braves. Only one of the OFs is really any good (unless Schafer continues to break out this year) but Garrett Jones can play LF.
I went looking online and CBS Sports did a piece on this back in December and the Braves ranked 2nd behind the Mariners in total talent, though I find that suspect. The Diamondbacks were next on the list with a bunch of strikeout prone power hitter with defensive issues. I mean Dan Uggla, Mark Reynolds and Carlos Quentin all on the same team?
