With Opening Day coming up and with April Fools' around, I thought I might just make a light-hearted, funny post that might just spark some interest. I mean, there's already been an April Fool's FanShot depicting a trade of Prado. So, I was thinking about this: Is talent in the Major Leagues related at all to a cool-sounding name?
First, I looked at current major leaguers that are successful. Easy names that come to mind are Roy Halladay, Albert Pujols, and our own Craig Kimbrel. Here's a basic, small list of successful guys that have cool, roll-off-the-tongue names, including some of our own guys:
1. Roy Halladay
2. Craig Kimbrel
4. Josh Johnson
5. (gulp) Carlos Zambrano
10. Justin Upton
Next, I made a basic list of successful icons with normal, somewhat bland names. Here is that list:
2. Joe Mauer
3. Albert Pujols
4. Derek Jeter
5. Matt Kemp
6. B.J. Upton
7. Jon Lester
10. Adam Jones
After looking at others, I'm thinking that talent can be related to a name. I'm thinking that around 3 out of 5 successful guys have a cool, unique name. So I thought, "who do we have that fits that bill and is on our prospect list?" First one that came to mind was pitcher Ben Swaggerty, but he's not a prospect. Julio Teheran, Andrelton Simmons, Jean Carlos Gil, Mycal Jones, Matt Lipka, and a few others come to mind. I say these guys could have at least average careers in the majors. What do you think?
