Tomahawk Chops: Daily Atlanta Braves News Clippings For Tuesday, March 6th

Your one-page daily morning overview of Atlanta Braves news:

First of all, good news from Atlanta's first baseman:

Jurrjens happy with results of first spring game | News
"You guys know, I [stink] in Spring Training anyway," Jurrjens said. "I get hit all of the time. I try a lot of stuff in Spring Training. The main thing is, I'm trying to get the feel back of pushing off and not feeling anything. I succeeded by pushing off with no pain. I wish I hadn't given up two runs, but this Spring Training, I'm just trying to work on my pitching and ... get comfortable with my mechanics again."

Key Braves show signs of life at plate | News
Dan Uggla went 2-for-3 with a home run and Brian McCann went 2-for-3 and scored twice to lead the Braves to an 10-5 victory over the Astros in the first Grapefruit League meeting between the clubs on Monday afternoon at Osceola County Stadium.

Uggla, Terdo heat up; Chipper, Freeman injury update | Atlanta Braves
"I call him J.T.," Gonzalez said of Terdoslavich, whose name is pronounced Ter-DOSS-lavich. "Couple of doubles switch-hitting, made a nice play, he’s been nice to see. He really hasn’t played much third base. He played first base most of the time last year."

Murphy working with Braves' broadcast team | News
Murphy will also spend portions of the next two weeks providing color commentary for at least five of the Braves' Spring Training games broadcast on radio. The experience could prove beneficial, as there is a chance he will also provide some color commentary for some regular-season television broadcasts. "I'm gaining a greater appreciation for how the media does things," Murphy said with a laugh.

Worth noting | News
Right-handed reliever Cory Gearrin, who worked a perfect eighth inning on Monday, has been focusing on changing speeds with his fastball. The hope is that the sidearmer will develop a pitch that makes him more effective against left-handed batters.

Braves' Michael Bourn gets settled in amid uncertainty after 2012 | News
"When I was there, every year, I was thinking, 'Stay there,'" Bourn said. "I always prepare to play where I am at. That's my approach. I don't see it any other way. That's the way I take it. In these days, it's hard to say you're going to play one place for a long time, because you rarely see that now."

Anthony Varvaro | Braves Journal
He’s got a good fastball, which averages about 93 and sometimes is a few ticks higher, and normally mixes in a curve as his second pitch though he also has a changeup. He probably needs to focus on just one as his offspeed pitch. He’s got talent, did better with the Braves than he ever did for the Mariners, and could eventually be a top reliever or at least a good middle man. If he harnesses his control. He’s 27 now, so the clock is ticking.

Point Right-arrow_medium Keep in mind, Teheran just turned 21 | Atlanta Braves
Let’s start by noting that it was March 4, in Julio Teheran’s first game of spring training, with a gale-force winds blowing out to right, against a power-laden Tigers lineup. Oh, and while Teheran knew he would be the second pitcher in Sunday’s game, "piggybacking" the Randall Delgado start, and was scheduled to work two innings, he ended up coming in an inning earlier than expected because Delgado threw 39 pitches in the ragged first (four runs, two hits, two walks) and wasn’t brought back out for his planned second inning.

Counterpoint Right-arrow_medium Big win today | Rowland's Office
Yeah, I know. I can hear all y’all smart fellas now. "Come on, now, Duane, it’s just spring training. They ain’t even really trying to win. The capital of Iran and Of the Cat are just kids. Couple of bad innings. Wind was blowing out. Blah. blah, freakin blah." Any of y’all ever strapped it up and got after somebody? ...keep reading, it gets even better...
