It has been reported this morning that Atlanta Braves reliever Jairo Asencio has been traded to the Indians for ... cash. Asencio is out of minor league options, and may not have been an option that the Braves wanted to carry in the bullpen, so if they didn't trade him they would more than likely have lost him on waivers.
This opens up a spot for Yohan Flande, who has had a great spring, and likely solidifies a spot in the bullpen for Cory Gearrin. The latest Talking Chop Making The Team Meter reflected that Flande was moving closer to a roster spot. Somewhere deep in my mind I also think that Ryan Buchter could be an option for the bullpen, but that can't be right...
In other news, the Braves also traded Luis Valdez to the Indians ... sources say it was a two for one deal.
Baseball America also has a list of minor league players who were released during spring training: RHP Danilo Alvarez, RHP Jeremy Haynes, RHP Tyler Hess, RHP Lucas LaPoint, RHP Daniel Lopez, RHP Kyle Mertins, RHP Angelo Paulino, RHP Aaron Shafer, RHP Dan Winnie, LHP Chris Cody, LHP Lenny Hardy, OF Jake Rife, OF Brian Stamps.
A couple of surprises here. First off is Stamps, he was just drafted last year and is still a young player. Shafer pitched really well last season, and I thought he has some potential. Mertins and Hess are also surprising releases.
