Jack Wilson Out For A Month With Strained Calf
I can't help but chuckle:
Jack Wilson. Not that much of an impact, just one of those things you shake your head at. This moves Drew Sutton into the picture to break camp with the Braves, and puts more pressure on Tyler Pastornicky and Brandon Hicks to have a good spring.

Hicks
Mentioned it in the MTM thread, but DOB tweeted this earlier from comments from Fredi G, “#Braves plan to use others in-house in backup SS role. Drew Sutton, Josh Wilson, maybe Andrelton Simmons for a while.”
No mention of Hicks.
has Hicks proven he's anything more than a AAAA player?

Definitely not...
But 28 PA isn’t really enough to prove otherwise.

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
4 open spots on the 40 man as of right now
Huge opportunity for Drew Sutton. If he hits at all that spot is his.
And the good news continues
Cant wait till they start playing spring games

Well he should be back by around opening day. And it is only Jack Wilson, it isn’t like the infrastructure of the team has been threatened.

I think the pressure should be on Hicks not to compete for a spot on the 25 man, but to stay on the 40-man and in the organization. Guy needs to prove he can be more than AAA filler and provide something for the team.

So please excuse me, but is it time to trade Minor for a shortstop?

I kinda had that thought
It’s probably an over reaction to Minor’s whining…afterall, he has a lot of potential and is the only lefty starter anywhere near major league ready in the system. Nonetheless….eggghh….I do not like the SS situation. We don’t need a black hole in the #8 spot in the lineup that is mediocre with the glove to boot.
But….who worth their salt could we get for Minor?

Make that deal IF he can move to 3rd when Andrelton is ready
A shortstop who is really a better 3B would be the kind of guy we’d need. Some prospect with a Toby Harrah kind of skill set: high OBP, good power, and ready to move over to 3rd eventually to make room for a better fielder, i.e. Andrelton Simmons.
I think Jhonny Peralta would be a good mold for the type of player we would want. Obviously Minor alone won’t get him, bc its not enough and the Tigers have no reason to trade a really good SS when they are in a great position to contend in the AL this year. But that type of guy is who would fit a mold of a SS who can move to 3B if needed.

you sure you want no LH pitchers

Perhaps Delgado or Vizcaino?

Pastornicky
He sabotaged him! It happened while he was working out before coming to Orlando, thereful, it’s all TP’s fault.
Curses!
Braves will be fine. I'm not worried.

So if Pastornicky has a rough spring......?
Jack Wilson was the insurance policy. This shouldn’t cause him to miss more than a week or two of the regular season, but it will effect the camp goes. The only way tis is really an issue is if Pastornicky has a rough Spring. In that case the Braves are going to have to take a long hard look at Sutton and Hicks.
It looks like Sutton has played LF and RF but never CF. Does he have enough range to play CF in a pinch? Does anyone know?
will be rooting for Sutton this spring.

It has started
The broke deek Braves haven’t even started camp and 2 players are hurt
We might set a record for injuries this year
This could be for the better
Sutton is the better player on the bench by far.. Sutton could become a weapon, Wilson is a dead spot in the lineup every time he is in.
But they would have gone w Wilson
For moral support etc.
How is Sutton's defense?
I’ve never seen him play, but his bat looks like it has a lot more upside than Jack Wilson….

Every year people get all excited about anew guy in camp, last year it was Ed Lucas (who preceded to post a 600 OPS in AAA).
Drew Sutton is a 28 year utility man, who’s defense is about avg. There is a reason he has a total of 159 ABs, he isn’t a great hitter, he has only exceeded in the minors upon repeating a league or being about 2-3 years too old for the league.
Jack Wilson isn’t great, but he is a very good defender, who struggled to hit. Jack Wilson is the best player for our utility role as our team is currently composed because of how good his defense is and the fact we have Prado to sub in at any IF position (except SS). It’s possible Drew Sutton is one of the incredibly rare players who despite never doing anything remarkable in his career, all the sudden turns into an above avg hitter at the age of 28. I don’t know Sutton and I’m sure he is a great guy, but he is organization depth and will be used as insurance in case a couple of people get hurt.

Actually, I'm assuming he's below average defensively
Because if he were average or better, he’d have gotten a chance to stick somewhere by now. His bat has played pretty much everywhere he has been over the past three seasons. He does strike out a bit too much, so we’ll see, but I think he’s actually a good deal better than Ed Lucas. But perhaps I’m overestimating him.

If teams thought he could hit he would have been given a chance by now, unless he was like Adam Dunn bad defensively. He isn’t a bad hitter, but he isn’t phenomenal, probably about avg for a bench hitter, if that. Or so says the all knowing me.

willllinn, glad to see you didn’t learn a lesson from your diehard support of Ed Lucas last year!

Im flattered you remember haha
Man he came out strong too… It was a shame he bombed, we could have really used him last year.. I have gotten the impression that sutton is a bit further along. You may have figured out by now that m an optimist. To be responsible about what I really think, I think we would be better if sutton played well enough to make the team. He is kinda old, but maybe old enough to hit off the bench w confidence. we already know Wilson won’t hit much.
Jack Wilson doesn’t need to hit much. They didn’t keep him around because they expect him to hit much. The guy is phenomenal with the glove, and that’s exactly why they kept him. With Ross, Hinske, and Diaz on the bench, you can afford a guy who doesn’t hit much, especially if he’s amazing with the glove.
