Braves Tweet For The Day ... Chipper On J-Hey

A great tweet to see from Atlanta Braves beat writer David O'Brien this morning, quoting Chipper Jones regarding Jason Heyward:

Hallelujah!

Excitement ... building.

Not to rain on the parade, because I love Heyward and think he’ll be great this year, but Chipper was the guy who was excited about Francoeur every spring.

I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it:

the difference is

I bet it did jump off his bat in BP, but because he never walked it never translated well. Being able to find and select pitches is extremely important for any hitter… Which Heyward is head over heels better than Francoeur.

This.

Heyward is probably one of the best when it comes to plate discipline.

The ball bouncing off the bat isn't on the scoreboard...

so I don’t think Jeff Francoeur took notice

When the ball bounces off Heyward’s bat, it’s hitting the scoreboard.

Homer alert

The things I’m reading about Heyward for the last week or so are starting to sound like the 2010 pre-season hype. Then he put up a season that was compared to Ty Cobb and Mickey Mantle! If he does indeed bounce back, Bourn, Prado, Heyward, McCann, Uggla, Chipper and Freeman could be a pretty formidable offensive group.

Two hitting coaches should help too! I for one am glad Prado is still on this team!

Completely agree

I hope Prado retires a Brave, then becomes the fitness coach!

The 2 hitting coach thing is getting some pretty good reviews.

Heyward

was trying to pull everything last year. He was at his best when he was going with the pitch and taking the ball the other way effectively.

Source: Jason Kirk article 3/31/11
Jason Heyward now has a two-year streak of swatting home runs on Opening Day, belting a one-run shot in the second inning against the Washington Nationals to extend the Atlanta Braves lead to 2-0.

Happened in the 2nd inning of the game so I’m assuming it was his first at bat.

2010 was the shot heard around the south according to Joe Simpson. J Heys first ever MLB bat. A blast into right off of the insane one Zambrano. A real pleasure to watch over & over.

was at that game

Probably one of the loudest reactions I have ever heard during a braves game. not joking on that either.

by CWil03 on Feb 2, 2012 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

I believe Chipper made a similar comment

Said it was the loudest that he had heard the Ted since the WS (I believe.) A guy from work was also there. Said it was deafening. I believe Heyward will be on a mission this year. The crews had better put up extra protective tarps to shelter any car windshields in the parking lot like they did last year.

They might also want to extend the backstop netting to go all the way around the field.

If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

Believe it or not, I don’t really remember the noise. The only thing I remember from that moment was the drunk fellow in front of me perched on top of his seat, rocking it back and forth like a frenzied monkey.

by swainzy on Feb 2, 2012 10:14 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I was there for that, up by the Golden Moon Casino.

The homer landed just down and to my left. That’s the loudest I’ve ever heard the stadium and it was sustained through two outs in the top of the 9th until…well.

The whole level was literally shaking. Everyone was jumping up and down for minutes and going apeshiet. Euporia, even for 10 minutes, was something I will never forget. :)

The homer on Opening Day 2011 was a line drive that more or less just clear the fence of RF.

by LEastCoastBears on Feb 2, 2012 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

loud

The loudest ive heard was Bobby Cox night last summer… Zambrano had just thrown two towards chipper and I believe was tossed from the game, braves hit like four home runs that night. It was great

by Saxby Phillips on Feb 2, 2012 5:39 PM EST reply actions

Weird

Zambrano seems to be present at all of the loud moments at the Ted.

No doubt

I expect to see a bench clearing episode sometime this year between the Fish & the Braves now that Zambrano’s going to be a regular prescence during the season.

Was also there for Chipper's two homer game vs the Mets.

And Randy’s perfect game, believe it or not. I couldn’t believe it, that’s for sure. By the 8th inning, the 18,000 or so who were there made a TON of noise. I was silent however, caught in between. Stunned.

Heyward is ready for a junior slump If you thought 2011 was bad you just wait. heyward is like Frenchy’s more disappointing younger brother except he is the much darker white hope . Freeman is much goofier than Heyward and a much better baseball player, expect him to hit first next year with bourne providing tha powa in the chipper spot. I think Fredi is the best manager ever, his knowledge of baseball is like wow. That’s all for now guys!!!

I was obviously kidding but I’m not even sure that is racist. The White Hope idea maybe, but the idea that Heyward’s complexion is darker than Frenchy’s is objectively true, and I was just jokingly juxtaposing the two. I really didn’t think it was racially charged or bigoted.

It was an unnecessary commentary on their race. Unless there’s a reason to bring it up, there’s no reason to bring it up.

Well the entire post was satire. It’s not normally something that I would comment on, but obviously the entire post was meant to be a trolling satire. Either way, it wasn’t out and out racism. Perhaps the issue of race was mentioned, but it wasn’t a racist joke or anything derogatory of judgmental, if anything it was merely an observation that two people were of different races. Anyway, the point was an impersonation of a stupid Braves fan, they are not my thoughts, and if anything were based on a 180 from my personal thoughts.
