The Not So Prestigious TC Fantasy Baseball League (edited)
EDIT: 2/15/11 I just made another league on yahoo. This league is a Roto 13 team league with the standard 5x5 categories. All who missed out on the first league are welcomed to join this one.

What are all us peasants suppose to do when the there is no room is one fantasy league? We create our own. We may not have as much witty batter as the other league, but at least we will have one. Anyways to any Braves fan looking for a fantasy home, I just created a 12 team league on yahoo. It is a standard H2H 5x5 league. I'd like it to be a keeper league with us keeping 4 or 5 players each year if we are all decent managers. All are welcomed to join until its full.

Draft Time
Draft time is set for Tuesday March 13 at 6:00 PM but it is changeable to accommodate everyone in the league if possible.

Actually, I’ve decided to bow out due to the H2H structure… I’m not a fan at all.
You'd think I was Travis Tritt struttin my FINE ASS on down to Florida
Sorry
Didn’t want teams to think there out of it after two or so months. Also adds the any playoff team can end up winning element.

When I first started playing roto, I actually thought that was a valid criticism. But in my last few years of playing, I’ve realized that’s an illusion rather than a fact.
In every roto league I’ve played in the last couple of years, there have been late movements, generally dramatic. Not every team benefits or gets hurt by them, but there definitely are shakeups. Hell, last year I finished in second after being in first from about the second week of April on. Starting in about the third week of August, the 5th-place guy (12-team league) started a hard charge forward, and overpassed me in enough categories just in time for the season to end. It was pretty exciting, though that’s what I get for not buying into some players’ late-season performances until it was too late. Not making that mistake again.

I'd be up for a Roto
I’m currently looking for one as I’ve never actually tried it. If it interests enough people here I’ll start one up. Also, what do you think about doing an auction draft?

I would gladly join a 5×5 roto, as I’m sure a lot of people here would.
Auction drafts are pretty interesting, but there are two big issues with them. First, it makes things take forever, and most people won’t want to devote more than the standard 60-90 minutes to a draft, so you end up with a bunch of people who don’t make the draft or leave early, and then it’s not fun because no one is invested in their team.
Second, it’s super-easy to accidentally gimp your team if you grossly overestimate a player’s value. As a result, if someone does something stupid, they will instantly lose interest in the league, and given that it’s hard to enforce participation, the whole experience suffers. If we were to get 12 people who had done their research and super-wanted to do an auction draft, I think it would be great fun. But that’s a participation requirement that really turns a lot of people off.
Anyway, sign me up for any 5×5 roto. (Or another scoring set, if there are categories that seem balanced and justifiable.) I was planning on making one myself, but am happy to let someone else do it. Prefer live draft, no weird positions added (people go overboard with 2 catchers and MI/CI/LF/CF/RF and my brain explodes), and the more teams the merrier, but am largely flexible.

Ugh. Don’t really like the auction idea at all.
I may need to ask for an hour later on that scheduled draft time, though… I’d still be at work in the central time zone.

Just created the Roto league. Standard draft.

Also...
I put the OF as 1 RF, 1CF, and 1 LF. Its not a major change I think, but its something I haven’t tried before that should add just another kink to the league.

Awesome, I joined.
My only suggestions would be to 1) move the draft time back to we account for spring training injuries (reducing the chance that someone’s early pick is negated and made worthless) and 2) ditch the second util slot.
I don’t really like two util slots because I think it gives people a bit of a free ride for roster construction purposes that they otherwise wouldn’t have. But it’s really a minor issue—I’m sure everyone’s drafts will adjust. As for the draft time, not sure what Yahoo’s available days/times still are, and it’s not really a big deal, but just something I’ve noticed. (I also drafted Peyton in the 3rd round in fantasy football this year because the draft was well before anyone was saying he would miss even a single start… sigh.)
I’m excited. Hopefully we get enough people—it’s always fun with more teams.
by Ivan the Great on Feb 15, 2012 7:12 PM EST up reply actions
We can defiantly move the draft time back, but I like the two UTL spots as the whole point of 13 team leagues is to create a deeper league which would be negated by decreasing roster size. The other option would be to add another OF or IF but than that throws things out of proportion with the OF to IF proportion.

I like the 2 util spots… specifically because it helps on ‘off’ days (when there’s only 3 or 4 games and you’re trying to get as many guys playing as possible).
The LF/CF/RF thing scares me a bit… though it’s the role players that tend to move around with those positions, not the ones you’d actually want on your FBB squad.
"Sir Stealth, Stay stealth.. Your a moron" (jrod1142), 12/15/11 (the epic FWren Fortitude FanPost)
Note that in roto and with the new Yahoo! cap on games played per position, this doesn’t actually benefit you anymore.
There are X days in the baseball season (too lazy to count), so unless you can’t muster 162-player days for each position over those X days, this isn’t a concern. What I’m saying is more that you can’t actually start a guy at UTIL every day for the entire season, because in your last two weeks or so, those starts won’t count because each position can only accumulate stats for you 162 times. Two util slots does create some interesting depth requirements, but I worry that it encourages people to do something like draft three first basemen early, just because they can.
But anyway, I did a complete bonehead move and flipped out that the draft was this weekend—didn’t realize it was March 19th (or whenever) and not February 19th. I rescind anything I said after the draft date, that should be totally fine.
by Ivan the Great on Feb 16, 2012 2:29 PM EST up reply actions
My concern is actually the thought the I’ll have to be much more concerned about week-to-week matchups, thus meaning a lot more effort on my part. Now since I haven’t done this format before, maybe that’s an illusion… for certainly tinkering around can screw things up as much (or more) than anything else.
I guess my real fear is in running into guys having a hot week… no matter how good my preparation seems to be, one player having a great week could screw all that up. I almost wish there was a “compromise” format between the two extremes.
BTW – in reference to Ivan’s post… in my last fantasy foray, I was mired in 10th-12th place through the all star break, then caught fire and finished about 5th…. and 3rd was within reach. If only I’d had a base stealer….

Am I in the wrong league or something?
It’s called southern baseball, the draft time is right, but there are only three owners.
Looks like you joined a league with rocket and georgiadawg. Me and 8 others are in a yahoo league called TC Baseball.
