Braves Waste Opportunities In Fourth

Stay connected for news and updates

Bottom of the fourth (Cards 3, Braves 2):

Freeman pulls a single down the right field line for a leadoff single. Uggla chops a ball to third and almost legs out a single on a close play. On the first pitch, Ross drops down a bunt to the third baseman and barely beats it out, tripping over the bag in the process. Then on the next pitch Simmons buts, seemingly bunting for a hit, but the throw to first hits him in the helmet and interference is called, and Simmons is called out. The runners have to stay at second and third. That was a rookie move by Simmons with the pitcher coming up. I wonder if someone missed a sign. Medlen strikes out to end the inning and strand two runners.

The telecast interviewed Fredi between innings who said the Simmons bunt was a safety squeeze. The fault is still on Simmons for running so far inside the baseline, like he was trying to get in the way of the throw.
