Atlanta Braves All-Star catcher Brian McCann has opted to undergo surgery to repair a frayed labrum and a cyst in his throwing shoulder. McCann had been weighing the option of just resting and rehabbing the injury, but it was announced by the team and McCann's agent today that he had opted for surgery.
The original recovery time frame was estimated to be four to five months, which would have him returning to action right around the beginning of spring training. It is being reported that the original time frame is still the expected recovery time, with McCann fully recovered by mid-February.
A more complete picture of recovery time will be known after surgery, and the Braves still have plenty of time to decide whether or not to pick up McCann's $12 million option for the 2013 season. All indications are that the team will pick up that option, with the expectation that McCann will once again be the opening day catcher.
