It seems like Chipper is almost giving too many reassurances of his health today (if you're following the tweets from David O'Brien and Mark Bowman). Of course, that could just be what those guys are choosing to highlight in their reporting today, and not really anything different than normal. Speaking of...

That’s for ‘13 according to what I’ve seen and heard, dunno where DOB pulled the ’12 from. Chipper back in 2013 might not be as much of a financial burden as you might think.

It all depends on how he performs this year, and if he can sneak in 120-130 games which would mean he stayed relatively healthy. Mix that with similar numbers he put up last year, and I am all in favor of him coming back.

I sure hope that this doesn’t turn into another Smoltz situation. I can’t bear to think about Chipper wearing another team’s uniform.

Seeing Chipper in a Redsox Uniform, or a Cardinals Uniform EVEN WORSE.. Still wish I would have never seen Smoltz anywhere else

No way he plays for another team
Unlike Smoltz, after this season Chipper knows he has less than 2 seasons left in the majors. He won’t accept a 1 year deal and retire with another team, or risk going to a team that cuts him when he doesn’t perform. He’s ending his career on his terms.
You know, retiring because you team won’t offer you a contract isn’t exactly ending your career on your own terms either.
Chipper would clearly like to get to another WS before his career ends, if the Braves don’t give him that chance don’t be shocked if he takes it with another club.

Could Chipper possibly learn to play 1st for a year .
Maybe move Freeman to the OF (LF) for just 1 year and move Prado to 3rd . I’m sure I will get some bashing or disagreements on this . But it seems as though maybe Chipper would benefit from not having to much as much as a 1st baseman on the field and might be able to play a few more games .
1st baseman need to stretch to dig up the ball. Chipper can’t possibly do that due to his leg problems. If you’re moving Freeman to the OF, Prado can play 1st.

Chipper, if he was a FA, I’d definitely offer him a contract. It wouldn’t be for anything over $4-5mil though.
That’s what he’s worth at this point in his career. He’s a good player when healthy.
He deserves a shot to go out on his own terms, but the other 24 guys on the club deserve the best team possible.
No need to worry
Chipper’s contract calls for a 2013 salary much reduced from his 2012 salary, which will be his last monster pay day in MLB. To be blunt the Braves can easily afford his 2013 salary. I believe if certain games played or maybe at bat targets are met this season his contract automatically kicks in for 2013.

I agree. But to be honest 7 million for 100 games of Chipper is not terrible, though it does create some constant question marks for our club. I’d rather it not be the case, but Chipper is unlikely to hamstring us financially in 2013 unless he is at least some kind of constant presence (120 ish games.) I also think that Chippers is not going to try to force in a couple of games unnecessarily for a couple more million. He has plenty of money and seems to care about the Braves. I don’t know for a fact, but I bet Chipper was privy to the fact that the option had a games limitation and that his value was partly incumbent on his ability to play regularly. I doubt he will abuse that to try to gain a (relatively) small pay day.
I personally hope he has a fantastic year culminating in a world series win that convinces him that he and baseball have had their time (a tough realization regardless of age.) I think that (to a point) money is valued less than the franchise that he basically embodies.

I'm well aware of what the word means
but by all means, please explain what would be similar to something that doesn’t exist in the NL? Are you saying he’d be a pinch hitter? That he’d start at 3B and be removed around the 6th inning after his 3rd or 4th at bat. How does an NL team use the “equivalent” of something they don’t use by rule?

and seeing that Selig wants the DH to go to both leagues (don’t get me started on that fiasco waiting to happen) as soon as 2013, he would be a nice DH insurance policy to have.

I love the fact the Chipper still has the will to play .
He obviously is going to be one those guys that is just going to be tough for him to walk away from the game . I would love to see the organization restructure a deal with him , if he is serious about playing beyond this year , where they ease him into a player/coaches role . Something where he starts this year . But maybe next year , he has a more limited role as a player (insurance in case of injury or backup) but is on the team as an assistant coach or coach in waiting for maybe as the hitting coach or manager .
