good...
As long as he is healthy he is productive… and worthy of a roster spot.. he has earned it

well...
there goes 9 million from the 2013 free agent frenzy fund
The 2013 free agent frenzy that we’d likely sit out anyway.
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

Aside from David Wright
none of the current options out there are appealing. BJ Upton? Shane Victorino? Resigning Bourn might not be a bad idea, but otherwise, you’ve got very suspect CFs, and a 3B who will likely cost beaucoup bucks and not be worth the price paid over the long haul.

Obviously, but your original post only referred to free agency. Trade is obviously the method Wren prefers and it’s tough to argue against it.

There were the recent comments from our LM CEO that free agency isn’t considered to be a productive way to build a team… which we collectively then kinda proved afterwards by running through the litany of bad contracts associated with ‘elite’ players.
So yeah, we’d probably sit out, or at best, go for a cost-effective/targeted solution. I’d expect that a trade is more likely.

Terry McGuirk has been around almost forever and, in fact, was Ted Turner’s right hand man way back in the glory days of building the TBS empire and, under present ownership, as far as we know, is allowed to operate the Braves entirely or at least mostly independent of LM’s direction and control. So, with all due respect, calling him “our LM CEO” seems a bit unfair.
yeah they already announced that things wouldnt be changing when it comes to Free Agents so… your statement has been confirmed as truth.. And Chipper makes up for his lack of game playing, or production, if thats what we call it… he replaces with leadership and coaching

the problem is not his production... usually...
its the fact that he can’t stay healthy and hurts the team much more when he’s out of the lineup than he helps when he’s in the lineup
His defense and base running is getting a bit painful to watch as well.

some are going to hate me.
but I think the team would have been much better off going into this season with Chip retired and Prado at 3B and a new 30 HR LF bat.
And who would you expect to be the 30 HR LF, and also how would we acquire this said outfielder?

well lets see
We trade Lowe. Save 5 mil. Chip retires. Thats 13 mil.
18 mil is a heck of a lot of money that could have been spent in various ways. Some bats could have been acquired that we couldn’t afford with Chip still on the books. Say for example the Yankees would have given up Swisher for Jurrjens but the deal could never happen because the Braves would have needed the Yankees to eat about half if not more of Swisher’s 2012 salary. Of course the Yankees would want a higher end prospect to go along with Jurrjens if they’d be eating that much and we all know Wren would say no.
That’s not to say that the deal was actually on the table in the first place but just says what could have been if we had some more money to spend this offseason.
Heck we could have even traded Jurrjens for Jones then signed us someone like Kuroda on that one year deal for 10mil to keep some depth in our rotation. Not the greatest idea but something else that could have been with more money.

Carlos Quentin
Makes $7MM this year, so he would have been attainable. And we certainly would have had the ‘spects to make it happen. Yes, he’s a butcher in the field, but a RH 25 HR .830 OPS guy.
Bourn
Prado
Heap
Uggla
Quentin
Freeman
Heyward
’Nicky
You'd think I was Travis Tritt struttin my FINE ASS on down to Florida
Money to spend is only 1/3 of the equation though
you’ve got to add both: the right player to spend it on, and a willingness from them to come here.
Just saying, WE’VE GOT MONEY TO SPEND! doesn’t complete the requirements.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
there were a hand full of players we could have spent it on and if they didnt want to come then we could have made a trade for someone else. However we were probably limited in our trading ability because we were probably asking teams to send some cash as well with some of the higher priced players.
Take Adam Jones for example. Our deal was probably something like Jurrjens and someone like Mycal Jones or some other not to high prospect for Adam Jones + 2 to 3 mil. If I were the Orioles I would have said no as well and/or asked for a better prospect. It would be completely different if we said JJ and low prospect for Jones alone. No extra cash. Deal might would have been done IF those were the reasons why

So long as we’re speculating, Carlos Beltran coulda been had for $18m. Maybe $15. He signed with the Cards for 2y/13m. Cuddyer went for an overpay of 3y/10.5. Willingham 3y/21.
Let’s just say that if Chip had opted out, there would have been lots of options available. I think I can make the argument, too, that WITH him things were more complicated. That’s not stating a preference (I’m kinda ambivalent), but it’s the reality.

They were asking way to much for Jones, and Swisher wasnt likely to happen either due to the fact that the Yankees OVERPAY for everyone, and the Braves will no longer overpay for even there own players. So we are still at a place where we have no 30 home run outfielder, or a way to pay one. So your logic is still not covered here. I dont think Adam Jones has hit 30 HR ever either.. the most he has hit is 25 last year, and before that it was 19. Not exactly a huge power threat.
