Attempting to predict what John Malone and Liberty Media will do with the Atlanta Braves and when is totally unproductive. Speculating about doomsday scenarios in which the Braves fall out of the upper-mid tier of semi-elite ML franchises is also totally unproductive.
And unless I’m badly mistaken, LM is a very solid corporate enterprise that is humming along quite nicely, year after year. Malone holds a 30% ownership share, is reputedly worth more than $4 Billion, personally, and is known to have the largest real property holdings in the U.S.
So, if we’re going to start rooting, I propose we should root for Mr. Malone to decide that one of the things he would really like to see happen is the Braves be more competitive to win world championships on a year in / year out basis; and direct additional financial resources be allocated accordingly.
Why the LM hate?
We have a upper mid-market payroll in an upper mid-market. We spend about what we take in, and do it very wisely IMO, so that we can compete with other major markets on the east coast. If Atlanta’s demographic was more invested in baseball, the Braves would benefit – that’s what Braves fans should encourage.
Kudos to the Braves’ corporate owners for running the team like a successful business. We’ll get more payroll when we bring in more money.
"I have a dream that our twelve pitchers will one day play in a city where they will not be judged solely by statistics, but on the quality and consistency of their pitches." - MLK, Jr.
And then we get a new owner who turns things in to their own personal piggy bank
ala Frank McCourt. Or is excessively involved and loves raking in luxury tax money to turn a profit, ala Jeffrey Loria. Or indebts things to the hilt while making countless stupid, unworth it free agent signings like Tom Hicks.
I just can’t wait until we get a new owner like one of those guys because an individual owning the team is the best and never goes bad.

I don't EVER do this, but...
…I will this time: don’t be a jerk.
Begging for companies like this to fail is like asking for thousands of people like your or me to be thrown out of work… and that to satisfy your own personal view of how things should be run on a sports team?? That’s just wrong.
Better that you go off and develop your own company that develops into a multi-billion dollar conglomerate so that you can make LM an offer they won’t refuse. Then you can do whatever you want. Realistic? Hey – people has obviously done this (Mark Cuban, anyone?).
Don’t root for failure: root for success. This is still America, and we do that ’round here.

The article
posted about the Braves’ payroll in the last couple of days was very encouraging for me. If the team is spending what it makes, it’s a good situation. If the team is spending more than it makes, that’s bad.
If the team is spending less than it makes, then it means the owner is interested in turning a profit (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
Instead of hoping LM fails, how ’bout we hope for fans to show up to the games, buy merchandise, and do the other things that fans do to give their teams more money?

Because it’s easier to rail against a faceless conglomerate for your favorite teams shortcomings than to look at reality. Maybe the Braves should rape taxpayers by demanding a new publicly funded stadium so they have more money to waste on the likes of Jose Reyes!
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

I also root for
the Phillies plane to crash
Dislike, even if meant as a joke. Tragedy sucks, regardless of fan allegiances. I’d feel horrible if something like that happened…

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
Oh, you people of integrity
I would be just as empathetic to the Phillies plane crashing as I am to the fact that every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger

We could do worse than having Liberty Media as owners.
I agree completely with those that say root for success, not failure. The Braves need attendance more than anything. LM treats us fairly.
Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.
We should all hope that
John Malone wakes up one day and realizes that he owns a baseball team and decides that he would like to add being owner of a WS champion to his list of accomplishments. Or decides to win one for his pal Ted.
Q: If not us, who? If not now, when? A: The Batman. And "when you least expect it."
Maybe Ted can taunt him...
“I won a World Series and several NL crowns, how bout you John?”
http://sportsandgrits.com/
Taunting worked on Vince McMahon
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
“Ted, with all due respect, you’re brain-addled fool if don’t you understand that I’m busy building a real media empire, one that is actually profitable and built to last. And, besides that, I don’t even like baseball.”
In defense of Ted...
…Ted built an incredibly profitable and very real media empire that was built to last. When he tired of running it all, he sold it to a solid and stable conglomerate which then made the incredibly stupid decision to let AOL buy them.
He also created Captain Planet!
the world’s greatest mulleted superhero.

Really, that explains...
building a real media empire, one that is actually profitable and built to last.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
Nope, no hate here
from the allusion Malone doesn’t like baseball (based on what?), to the complete crocks of Turner not building a “real media empire, one that is actually profitable and built to last” (because TBS isn’t profitable, real, or still going strong, same with TNT, and again with CNN which began the 24hour news channel model now operated by several others. Or that Ted somehow had his many billions before those channels took off, since they weren’t “acutally profitable”.)
But no, you aren’t unreasonably bashing Liberty at all. Why do you hate America fandave?

by Mr. Sanchez on Jan 30, 2012 11:42 AM EST up reply actions
look at this way: if Ted taunts John, would John be shamed into submission and meekly say, “Ted, good friend, you are so right!” or might he taunt right back?
If we want to carry on with your continued anti-Liberty agenda
it’s obvious which response you’d give.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
You’re being ridiculous. I love America and what it actually stands for.
On the other hand, I obviously am less than enamored with you.
PS – do you personally have any idea – one way or the other – whether Malone likes baseball; and if so, based on what?
So the answer to the question is no
you have absolutely nothing to base your implication that Malone dislikes baseball.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
Your implication that I hate America is ridiculous, offensive, and seriously out of line.
I am disappointed that you have decided to start attacking me because of your own faulty implications and conclusions about my thoughts and opinions.
Last time I checked this is a discussion board and freedom of speech is not particularly restricted. I have expressed my opinions, which I believe are reasonably well-founded based on my perceptions of the reality of the situation and my analysis which I have discussed and defended at more than adequate length. The fact that we seem to disagree is unsurprising and really entirely inconsequential. However, I will plan to continue to express my opinions as I see fit and with no particular regard for whether you may disagree, disapprove, or decide to whip yourself into a frenzy.
Remove the large piece of wood, and realize...
it’s a joke. You hate Liberty (Media), thus the America bit. It’s not actually accusing you of hating the United States. Goodness gracious.
As for the “reasonably well founded” part, I keep waiting for the proof that John Malone hates baseball, among other unfounded accusations you’ve made regarding him, his business practices, and his company’s treatment of the Braves.

As a lawyer in our society, I assume you must, of course, has some glimmer of insight and appreciation of the fact that at least for the last 12 years or so, the right wing propaganda machine and more than just a few right wing politicans have routinely accused other Americans of hating America regarding topics like a small but completely unnecessary war that only cost a mere $800 Trillion or so and directly resulted in over 100,000 innocent civilians losing their lives and millions more becoming refugees, and the kind of unfettered, unregulated, anything goes vulture capitalism that ko’ed the world economy in late 2008 and has created the greatest disparities of both wealth and income in the history of our nation.
Oh, hell yeah, other than shit like that, its just a fucking little joke. I got the first time, you fool. Just don’t think its very funny.
Jesus, sorry that my mind boggles, but that number is $800 BILLION so far, although taking into secondary costs for things like future medical care for our injured soldiers, replacement of equipment for our military, etc, the total projections are closer to $4 Trillion.
" I got the first time"
Well clearly, that explains…
Your implication that I hate America is ridiculous, offensive, and seriously out of line.
But thank you for bringing more of exactly what these comment threads lack, political posturing and debate over wars.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
really wasn’t an implication at all, although it was your very own wildly attenuated implications that started this particular argumernt (I was merely rifting off your imaginary taunting by Ted with my own imaginary taunting by John).
it was a rhetorical question:
Why do you hate America fandave?
my bad.
Not sure why I expected more out of you
than to come in out of the blue with more Liberty hating. And the political diatribe, magnifique.

http://sportsandgrits.com/
and your dog whistle crap, followed by the ol’ just joking dodge, absolutely and classically disingenuous. almost like you’ve studied at the feet of some of the true masters.
So you got that it was in just, but now claim a dodge, which is it?
Because I truly believe you hate America.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
Nonsense indeed . Which is it? It makes no damn difference because of the fact that is Code … somewhat similar to a veiled racial slur or loose reference to the Holocaust.
So, really, in your circles is it high comedy to to call others “Ni**er”, “Little Hitler” or “UnAmerican”? I seriously doubt it.
As for the Liberty hating meme, this is also just total bullshit and you should stop now. Why is it exactly that you feel the need to attack me for pointing out the blatently obvious and essentially undeniable facts? Liberty Media and the Braves were joined together in a shotgun wedding and have since been operated subject to terms and conditions affirmatively imposed by MLB, including leaving the pre-existing management team in place and maintaining payroll at certain (and in my view, undoubted carefully defined and structured) levels. As for John Malone, he has never (as far as I can tell by the research I’ve tried to do) even made one meaningful public statement about the Atlanta Braves, their success, or their future. Has he ever attended a game? Not as far as I know. And merely that by virtue of being successful businessman and a billionaire, he’s not necesarily some American hero or God-like figure before whom we should bow down before in worship and praise. So, in addition to being offended (obviously you are indifferent to that), this entire mission of yours is beyond bizarre to me.
so, as long as you can refuse to address the substance of any issue, that equals a win? or are you going for smart-assed, juvenile, and irrational?
What substance have you brought?
Besides your own opinions that you want to tout as “undeniable facts”? Let’s get in to more “LIberty is evil”, “John Malone is a greedy jerk who hates baseball”, “Why won’t Arthur Blank buy a team that isn’t for sale?”, etc, etc, etc. When there’s something to discuss, sure, let’s discuss it. But talking your fantasy and biased, self-deluded opinions, ain’t really much of a discussion.
But hey, at least you got to talk about Nazi’s and racism.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
also, are you consistently abusive and snide with everyone who has misfortune with having to deal with you, are only on the internet?
That's some wonderful "substance" there
but to answer your question, I don’t tolerate fools well.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
so, you’re only an asshole when its fully warranted, fool.?
maybe we should plan to meet and see if we can work through our apparent differences like men.

Thanks, but fisticuffs are for tough guys. If I ever was tough, I’m not tough now. And, in fact, I’m really too damn old be be fighting anybody except in a case of dire emergency. (I did, however, get sucker punched by a motorcycle gangbanger in one of the worst dive cheap beer joints ever about 33 and one half years ago).
So, if Mr. S does decide me up on my offer, my best option would probably be to try to patch things up by drinking some cold beer of his favorite flavor and maybe talking some Southern jingoism. That – if anything – might solve the problem.
