Maybe he does not have $3M plus incentives, and can not get it.
If so, he is blameless and you will need to look for someone else to blame.
I do not want to denigrate anyone’s analysis, but the reality of the matter is we really do not know and have no way to be sure. Basically, it is just speculation and guesswork.
The Braves have made no official announcement of the team’s intended budget or maximum allocation for player payroll. And if Wren was, in fact, either operating under a hard cap and/or was right up against it, or simply understood that he had no more capacity to spend at this time, then it might be very prudent to not divulge that info to all his adversaries.
His recent statement was:
"We plan to keep some margin to allow us to make some additions during the season, at the break," Wren said. "We feel like we’re right where we want to be at this time of the year. It gives us flexibility to make moves."
Of course, this statement is fuzzy at best … what is the definition of “some flexibility” and he seems to be suggsting later, not now.
Before the offseason got into full swing, Wren said the payroll would increase. Thus far, it has decreased by a few million. My point is this: you don’t advertise a payroll increase if it’s just a buck. There should be some significant most there. If not, what’s the point in making the statement?

dunno, but we can’t rule out puffing and bluffing to defuse or minimize the perception among other GMs/potential trading partners that he really needed to move JJ and/or Prado to free up $, which undercut his leverage to get anything done.
of course, if that was what was going on, it didn’t work: he was low-balled anyway and low-balled so badly, he just had to stand point and then is left to give us happy talk about it.
Signing Cody Ross to the deal he got with the Sox would have made our payroll increase by roughly 2 million. Adding a 2nd year would have solidified his decision to be a Brave. Cody Ross at 2/8 million or 2/6 million with incentives is a heck of a bargain (he’s been well worth that even in his down years). He’s a player with a reputation of crushing lefties and has the ability to play all OF positions. In our division where there are tough LH starting pitchers everywhere, letting him go for such a small price was ridiculous, especially if you’re going to advertise a “payroll increase”. If he would have succeeded in his role as part-time LF that gives each OF a breather once in a while, it would have made the decision to let Bourn walk much easier knowing that Ross is capable of filling that hole.

Forgive me if I don’t cry over a 4th OF. That’s what Cody Ross is, after all.
He can’t fill Bourn’s spot next year, unless you want a horribly inadequate starting CF. He’s a slightly better than league-average bat. He hits LHP, but that’s unfortunately not the important half of a platoon. 75% of pitchers are RHP, and he fares poorly against them.
The Braves are in great position to start the year. Unfortunately, perceived needs at the beginning of the year are usually not the same needs come June-July, so I’m glad Wren’s stashing some cash to take care of issues as they arise. I would much rather have $8MM and the ability to pick up an impact player at the trade deadline than I would have Cody Ross for two years and no financial flexibility.

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?

Still, I'd rather have Cody Ross on the bench than Matt Diaz
adding him, when we were obligated for this second season on the deal, makes little sense.

How can you call Cody Ross horribly inadequate as a CF? Sure, he’s not Bourn, but he’s not Melky or McLouth either. He’s an average defensive CF with an above average CF bat. I’d take that as a replacement for Bourn any day (especially if it lands us a true LF power bat).
Just Beachy here. How 'bout you?
He’s on the wrong side of 30 and his range has been below average the past few years…basically, his UZR is buoyed by the fact that he makes plays on the balls he gets to. He’s not a speedster, by any means, and he’s going to get to fewer balls as he gets older. Likewise, DRS puts him at being slightly below average for the past couple seasons, for the same reasons.
On another note, how does Bourn land us a true LF power bat?? He’s not getting traded in the thick of a pennant chase, and he’s a FA at the end of the season. He’s not going to land us anything, short of a couple draft picks.

I was referring to the 2nd year of the above scenario. If we were to get Cody for 2/8 million and he performed according to his career numbers, he could take over CF in 2013, and the Braves could use the money in 2013 to sign a real LF.
Just Beachy here. How 'bout you?
the $ that we would have to use to keep Bourn in CF (if he performs up to the standard set for him, and if he didn’t, we probably wouldn’t want him anyway), would probably be 6 million (Bourn at 10 per year – Cody at 4). I just realized how useless this argument is now.

Myself, as a fan, I look at it this way.
Would I rather us add some mid-tier player, who will not start rite now, or us make a trade just to make a trade when JJ’s value is most likely at its relative low-end….OR
Would I rather the front office, wait til around mid-season, see what the Braves have in certain players, possibly raise the value of their candidates,or wait until a player comes available that will/can put this team at a higher level to compete……..
If the Braves spend the money now, if an injury occurs, a player doesn’t perform, someone becomes avaiolable foor the rite trade price…..They are relatively screwed with tying their hands….BY SIGNING A “CODY ROSS??” No thank you…..
We, as fans, know injuries occur….also look at it this way if we have 3mil to spend now, technically it doubles by mid-season…..
So while the Braves can only afford someone who is worse “say 3 mil”…..when it comes to the middle-of-the-year, slightly earlier, or the waiver deadline our 3 million player turns into a 6mil player that the Braves could fetch…..
Also, as I said, we know injuries are going to occur it is just a matter of time, the Braves have players now, that can fill-in pretty well….There really is not any holes as of NOW….Could the Braves upgrade?? Yes, but what team couldn’t?…..I believe the better option is to wait when teams are no longer contending, and players that were once untouchable then become readily available….
Only downside to waiting is that most likely while their price will drop and availability will rise for many more players, BUT the cost in terms of value will rise for players….But regardless the Braves have the pieces to pull-off just about any trade they please, with any team they please….Those are just facts…now would they trade some of the pieces it is unlikely but when and if JJ’s value rises he can very likely become the hot commodity of the league….
I believe the Braves will make a move and pull the trigger on someone, but point remains that it will be a whole different group of players that we are talking about becoming a Brave, and in the end I believe that all of us fans will thank Wren that we waited…..
Inn Wren I trust!!
Sometimes I wake up grumpy; other times I let her sleep.
