Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies Series Recap
Well, as fun as this series was, I think we all are happy that the Braves have left Philadelphia and are on to nicer pastures. Here are some notes from the very ugly series against the Phillies.
I take full responsibility for Raul Ibanez and his offensive explosion this series, as I wrote in my series preview that he was very very bad (which he still is). Ibanez went 4-7 with four RBI's, a home run, and two runs scored.
Cliff Lee was dominant in game one of the series. He threw a five-hit shutout, striking out six and walking none in a very impressive performance.
Michael Bourn tallied four hits, including a double, and two runs scored in the series. That double broke up Roy Oswalt's no-hitter in game three of the series in the sixth inning.
While he earned a no-decision, Brandon Beachy pitched great as well in the series finale. He threw 5.2 innings, giving up only two hits and one run while striking out seven and walking just one.
Peter Moylan made his return to the major leagues during the series, throwing two inning. He threw a scoreless frame in game one, and gave up the game-winning run in game three of the series. Even with the struggles, it's good to have him back in the pen.
Jose Constanza went 1-7 at the plate, including a couple of bad at-bats with runners on base. There's no reason not to give Jason Heyward consistent playing time now as Constanza has been terrible at the plate lately.
This sweep at the hands of the Phillies was the first time Atlanta has been swept all season long. Had to happen sometime.
Up next: Atlanta heads to New York for a double header on Thursday and then flies to St. Louis for a three-game series starting Friday.

is the reason to not give Heyward consistent PT. I’m not saying its right, but he’ll platoon with Diaz even if Constanza struggles.
That’s better than what he’s been getting. Even a platoon like that would be an increase in his playing time.

Opening a can of worms
A sss is not enough reason to give someone hitting well playing time over another player, but when they are going badly, ex. 1 for 7, its enough reason to take it away. That being said, good to see Heyward getting a few good at-bats, but he is still swinging too hard and trying to pull certain pitches when he should just be trying to make contact. Make contact and the hits will come, ask Uggla. Would be great to see J-Hey get hot for the rest of Sept.

Since August 16th,
Constanza is hitting .205/.239/.205 with 8 K’s and 2 BB’s.

This series was disheartening
Unless we can heal quickly, I have doubts about our ability to beat the Phils in the post-season.
I know in a seven-game series, anything can happen, but it’s going to be extremely tough if we can’t hit. We scored a total of 5 runs against them, and we didn’t even face Halladay or Hamels.
While I’m sure it’s dumb luck, why is our team physically breaking down at the end of the season again?
I’d feel confident with a healthy JJ and Hanson pitching, but not with a rotation of Hudson, Beachy, Lowe, and, likely, Minor, not against Halladay, Lee, Hamels, and Oswalt.
Of course, this assumes we get by the Brewers.

Again
“why is our team physically breaking down at the end of the season again?”
“Again” being the key word here. They always break down in Sept. What’s the point of the Braves hobbling into the playoffs when it isn’t clear they even want to win?
get over your shit
there’s still plenty of time to heat up
McCann is struggling a little at the plate
Freeman is struggling a little
Prado is struggling a little
These guys can turn it on, and I suspect will turn it on.
This series isn’t panic worthy at all. I thougt Moylan was decent and he should get better the more he pitches. Venters really should have put those scrubs to sleep but he’ll do that from time to time. Beachy was great though as was EOF. I read The Good Phight this morning…let them try to retaliate in ATL over what happened to Utley. Anyway, it is what it is, regroup against the Mess, find some rhythem and get in the playoffs.
I think reading TGP...
instantly lowers one’s IQ by about 20-30 points. I realize they have the best team in baseball…I think we all do…but they’re just being Entitled Douches about it. If they don’t make at least the World Series that fall will be pretty far and the thud will be pretty loud. They have a great baseball team, but a now perpetually unsustainable payroll. They’re fortunate that there were hardly any such sports blogs in the 1990’s when they were beyond terrible.
Like I’ve said, let them have their fun. Starting about 2013 when the wheels come off the very players that are earning the most…it won’t take long for them, now that they’ve gutted their farm system, to descend into that level of sucking once again. I don’t mind being 10.5 games back of the division if our team is built to win 90-95 games for the majority of years.
Whole new ballgame once we get in the playoffs…
They really think
that EOF intentionally hit Utley in the head to load the bases in a close game? They’re bigger jackasses then I thought (which I didn’t think was possible).
The Braves seem to have a phobia of winning in CBP in September. The same thing happened last year.

At least we were able to implement some bunts and move some guys over after Fredi was ejected.
Kind of like the anti-Bobby Cox…. Rather than getting ejected to light the fire under the guys… It allowed Tosca to actually bunt some guys into scoring position.

At least we’re looking at another year before we get swept in a three game series again.
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

Not worried
I have full confidence that we can beat the Phillies in the plaly offs. In game one this was our lineup
Michael Bourn, CF
Martin Prado, 3B
Brian McCann, C
Dan Uggla, 2B
Matt Diaz, RF
Freddie Freeman, 1B
Alex Gonzalez, SS
Jose Constanza, LF
Pretty sure in the play offs we see Chipper in there instead of Constanza. Making the lineup
Bourn
Prado
Chip
Uggla
McCann
Diaz
Freeman
Gonzo
That improves our chances right there.
Game #2 we see O’Ventbrel instead of Martinez and such.
Also we hopefully wont have a slumping Constanza in the outfield.
It's great just to ignore the Brewers,
What’s Atlanta’s record in the first round over the last 20 years?
Therefore I say, lets enjoy the feeling a successful regular season, as usual. Being the 2nd best in all of the entire NL is nothing to grouse about.
Did you see the SI.com comments about our ground-ball double play specialist, Prado?
