Around SBN: Miami Wins Opener Over Boston, 93-79

Philadelphia Completes Sweep Over Atlanta With A 3-2 Win.

Raul Ibanez killed the Braves yet again.

This just wasn't the Braves series.

Philadephia completed the sweep over Atlanta thanks to a Ross Gload walk-off single off Peter Moylan.

The Phillies plated only one run against Braves starter Brandon Beachy, as Raul Ibanez homered in the second inning to make it a 1-0 game.

Other than that, Beachy was dazzling. He gave up only two hits and the one run while striking out seven and walking one in 5.2 innings pitched.

Phillies starter Roy Oswalt had a no-hitter through five innings, but Michael Bourn broke it up with a double to center field to start the sixth inning. Two batters later, Chipper Jones singled to center, scoring Bourn and tying the game at one.

Atlanta took the lead in the seventh inning. Jason Heyward singled to start the inning, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Alex Gonzalez. Freddie Freeman followed with a single that scored Heyward and gave Atlanta a 2-1 lead.

That lead however, was short lived. Jonny Venters came in from the bullpen to pitch the eighth inning, and promptly gave up a single to John Mayberry. Mayberry advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single from Placido Polanco to tie up the game again.

Peter Moylan pitched the ninth inning for Atlanta. A one-out walk to Ibanez and a single from Carlos Ruiz put runners on first and second for pinch hitter Ross Gload. Gload lined a slider down the right field line for a single that scored Ibanez and ended the game with a score of 3-2 Phillies.

I really am asking this in the nicest possible way.

Do you ever have anything positive to say about the Braves? Or maybe the better question.. do you ever feel the compulsion to say something negative about the Braves and decide not to?

I’m really not trying to get on your case here; I just wonder if you realize how depressing all your negativity is?

worst possible outcome

especially with the results giving the Phillies some confidence against the Braves’ still very formidable bullpen

would be very nice if the Braves can sweep the DH on Thursday

There is a fanpost on TGP that details the remarkably consistent 25 game hot & cold streaks of Ibanez over the past 2 seasons. He just entered into a hot period the other day…he averages like .300+ during hot streaks and sub .150 during cold streaks…it is quite the statistical anomaly.

He must plan those 25 game hot streaks whenever he sees Atlanta on the schedule. First it was Rollins, then Victorino, then Howard, and now Ibanez kicks our ass regulary.

The next 4 days will determine

… if the rest of September will be stressful. Best case, Braves are 10.5 up (sweep DH, sweep Cards)… worst case, 2.5 up (lose both in NY, get swept in STL).

that’s a big if….it’s not like your rooting for the Mets. This game and series meant very little to either team…regardless of the outcome, the Phils would go on to win the division and the Braves the wild card. The pitching staffs of both teams are too good to go on any significant losing streak that will ultimately change their fate.

As far as the division is concerned, maybe this series meant little, but don’t downplay the mental end of it. I am a little tired of hearing it meant little. The mental confidence the Braves could have gained had they won the series in undeniable. Unfortunately it went the other way.

It's pretty unlikely that the Braves lose all 5 games

And it’s even more unlikely that the Cardinals win those 5 games.

They definitely still have a firm grip on a playoff spot, but they need to get it together.

Also,

I’m very excited to have Mr. PeMo, back in the pen, this makes for one of the most formidable pens in the majors, IMO the best, by far.

PeMo just needs a little more work, to get out some kinks and rust, but by playoffs he should be fun. This teams long-term focus should be on Milwaukee and getting healthy, not Philly. Hopefully, for the final some-odd series left, we can get the top of the order going, mayb we will see J-Hey at the #2, and a bump down for Prado? to light a flame under Prado’s ass. Honestly, I feel, when Prado goes, this team goes.

All the pieces are in their proper place, is just a matter of getting healthy, and SOME FUCKING CONSISTENCY!!!

Progress can be seen from the beginning of the series.
First game “0” runs,
Second game only doubled by Philly,
Third game tie game until the bottom of the 9th.
Peter needed the work, Jason got a hit, etc. better than being shut out for 3 games.

with Utley getting a concussion from that bean ball, that series could get interesting. It was clearly not intentional and the Phils have not been one to follow Tony LaRussa’s playbook when it comes to retaliation…in fact they never really retaliate…but if Utley ends up in Morneau land, I can see that changing.

5/12/13 and counting...

by DirtyWaters on Sep 8, 2011 1:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe. But everybody that saw it knows it wasn’t intentional. Just seems like an easy way to get distracted if you force yourself to take it personally, if Manuel is worth his salt he’ll steer away from it. With that being said, that’d be a lot of fun to watch right?

by GumpBrave on Sep 8, 2011 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions

The game situation, body language O’Flaherty, and reaction by McCann made it pretty obvious that is wasn’t intentional…I was just saying that some teams…LaRussa, ahem…don’t care about intentions. I think the Phils should just plunk Nyger Morgan instead and make everyone happy.

Today Facebook told me that exactly one year ago I was talking shit about the Phila teams. Who would’ve known that applies today as well.

Oh well, like several people have said, this series didn’t matter too terribly much in the grand scheme of things. We were likely to be the WC no matter what. Maybe it will be a “chip on the shoulder” situation if we play them in the playoffs.

depressing

the good thing is Heyward and Beachy both had great nights. Also nice to see Chipper back in the #3 hole.

I doubt it will happen but we really need Freeman to sit out those games tomorrow so he can feel better come this weekend against the Cardinals. I guess game one lineup

1. Bourn CF
2. Constanza LF
3. Prado 3B
4. Hinske 1B
5. Uggla 2B
6. Heyward RF
7. Ross C
8. Wilson SS

Game 2

1. Constanza RF
2. Richardson CF
3. Chip 3B
4. McCann C
5. Diaz RF
6. Hinske 1B
7. Gonzo SS
8. Lugo 2B

neither of those lineups are pretty but its kind of what i figure will happen with us going into a big series against STL. Having one of your starters play two games would be rough. I believe the lineup for game 2 will strongly depend on how we do in game 1.

Game 1 lineup

If they are thinking, I bet Constanza gets to start against Chris Schwinden — he may be the only guy on the team who’s actually seen the kid (Buffalo, North division of Int’l league).

Schwinden, in 145.2 innings for Buffalo went 8-8 with a 3.95 in 26 starts. One homer every 10 IP, 8K per 9 innings, ~3:1 K-to-walk ratio. 1.28 WHIP. Buffalo as a team was 21 games below .500, 20.5 games behind Pawtucket. They weren’t last, but only because Rochester completely sucked.

Well, I’m really not concerned or bummed out by the sweep. I’m worried about the offense though and the big swings we see too often. I can’f say that I like the approach. I can’y wait to see the rooks some more. I bet one/two of these rooks will take Lowe’s spot in the playoffs. What’s up with Prado by the way?

by Philly Bravo on Sep 8, 2011 6:26 AM EDT reply actions

Cliff Lee

Threw a complete game shutout with 6 strikeouts. What worries me is he completed this feat by throwing only 100 pitches. He probably could have pitched 13 innings if the game were tied. In the playoffs, we need to get to the Brewers and Phillies bullpens. Their rotations are not too shabby.

by rxadam on Sep 8, 2011 7:48 AM EDT reply actions

The problem we’re having with Lee is that he just doesn’t walk anybody (< 2 BB/9). That means he’s throwing strikes, so you need to be ready to hit at any point in the count once you see a pitch you like. You’re not gonna wear out guys like that (unless it’s 98°F in an Atlanta summer, but we’re past that now) — you have to beat them with production. That’s also why Maddux had ridiculously low pitch counts, BTW.

We’ve gotten to him in the past – the other night just didn’t work as he was really on his game.

But, who do you close out the game with? Would you risk sending Kimbrel back out for a second inning? You always play to end the game with your closer. That’s the default.

Wow, talk about stinking up the joint — to me this shows that this team is either coasting to a perceived guaranteed wild card slot OR is merely the best of the the mediocre in the NL.

Performance overall for the last week or so has been abysmal and this does not look like a team that will succeed in postseason, assuming the golden ticket gets punched.
