Cliff Lee Dominates As Philadelphia Routs Atlanta 9-0
Safe to say the Atlanta Braves just didn't have it tonight. Cliff Lee tossed a five hit shutout and Derek Lowe got knocked around as Philadelphia beat Atlanta 9-0.
The Phillies got things started in the bottom of the first inning, as Placido Polanco and Chase Utley singled with one out and scored on a single from Hunter Pence to give Philly a 2-0 lead.
The scoring continued in the fourth inning, as John Mayberry walked to start the inning. Carlos Ruiz reached on an error by Alex Gonzalez, putting runners on first and second. Michael Martinez then sacrificed bunted the runners over to second and third.
Two batters later, Shane Victorino singled with two outs, scoring Mayberry and Ruiz to make it a 4-0 game.
The fifth inning was no kinder to Derek Lowe. A triple by Utley and an intentional walk to Ryan Howard put runners on first and third for Pence. Pence then doubled, scoring Utley and advancing Howard to third.
After a walk to Mayberry to load the bases, Ruiz singled to center, scoring Pence and Howard and giving Philly a 7-0 lead.
That was the last inning for Derek Lowe, as he finished with a line of 5 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, and 4 K's.
Ryan Howard homered off reliever Scott Linebrink in the seventh inning to increase the lead to 8-0, and Philadelphia added another run in the eighth inning off Arodys Vizcaino to finish the scoring at 9-0.
Cliff Lee was dominant, walking none and striking out six in his nine shutout innings.
Peter Moylan made his return to the majors tonight, striking out one batter and getting out all three he faced.

Losing to Cliff Lee as good as he right now is nothing to be ashamed of.
Our crappy lucky team *WAS* better than your good unlucky team.
BUT
there is shame in losing 9-0

That’s all you can really say after tonight’s game. I just hope Heyward goes on a tear this month and October. Him hitting like he can would be a humongous boost to this teams offense.
Also was it just me or did it look like Prado lost a step at 3B defensively. Guess that’s a byproduct of playing LF all season

When I knew that Derek Lowe was starting
I knew it would be bad if the braves couldn’t hit
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
You know Derek wasn’t all that bad.. Prado missed two plays at 3rd which cost us 4 runs and then it was all downhill from there. Prado has been terrible all season. I know he’s a hardworker and a good team guy but it seems he has came down to earth this season. His walk rate continues decline and he relies purely on contact to get on base. I think we should part ways with him in the offseason and pick up a legit corner outfielder.

well
apparently the thing is with Bourn in front of him he has tried to become more of an opposite field hitter and has apparently abandoned trying to really pull the ball.

Well someone should tell him it isn’t working for him. Hell if I’m fredi I see that it isn’t working and I move him out of the two hole he’s been worthless lately.

Ha, that is the excuse the Braves broadcasters make. There may be some validity to that argument, but other factors are contributing to his downfall this season.

Listen, I’m not saying Derek was good or has been good all season all I’m saying is if Prado makes those two plays which was definitely in range that’s 4 runs erased from the board.

If Lowe didn't embarrass himself 80% of the time he took the mound
I might extend him the benefit of the doubt. Tonight was what we’ve seen time and time again from him: bad control, far too may pitches to last deep into the game, hanging pitches in key situations…the whole Derek Lowe Experience.
Yes, Iassonga blew that call with Pence and Prado might have made that play but when you’ve got a guy flinging pitches all over the zone and wandering around aimlessly like he’s just been released from an overnight stay in the county lockup, fielders are going to get back on their heels. It’s a common phenomenon.
Derek Lowe can NOT do his job consistently and needs to be relieved of it ASAP.

Prado has been terrible all season.
Last night he got the walk-off hit, iirc. I agree, he has been less than stellar in comparison to last season, but he’s been injured, and moved around quite a bit defensively.

Yeah he got the winning hit but in a night that he went what 1-5? Every year his walks have went down and he relies soley on contact a la agon.

Definitely ended on a high note last night, but I don’t think that that managed to even convince Prado that he is on some tear. He knows that he is struggling as much as we do. The upside is that a guy with that work ethic and team conscience is bound to play to his ability. Here’s to hoping he hits that in late september/ early october.

Well said. I have said all season long that Derek Lowe could be considered a good pitcher if he just had a competent defense working behind him. Prado, Uggla, and Freeman are allow significantly below average at their positions according to UZR and with Derek Lowe being somebody that induces hard groundball contact he needs fielders with more range that will allow him to match his ERA with his advance metrics. Furthermore, your notion about Prado being terrible all season is valid from my perspective. Prado has played mediocre defense at 3b this season in his limited action and his defense in LF has slipped dramatically since he came back from the DL. Maybe he is playing injured because he looks slower and less athletic than in years past, but the fact remains that he needs to walk more. Having his offensive production soley tied to BABIP is troubling for him and the Braves offense. They need to value OBP and walk rate more than they do. To conclude my rant, I have confidence in the team and Prado. I am unsure if trading him is the correct or even a considered answer, the fact remains the Braves must teach patience and the value of reaching base through other means than base hits.

Derek Lowe could be considered a good pitcher
If he could throw good pitches with good control. He can’t do either and the best defense in the world won’t help him under those circumstances.

He hasn't been off the DL very long since the trade
I’d give him more playing time before coming to that conclusion.
Twitter:Hey_Jude18
He could have done that for 2 months and it’s still not sustainable. I personally think we should have played with a makeshift CF (though Constanza was just surging when the trade was made if I remember correctly) and gone for Pence.
I know it sounds like 20/20 hindsight, but my girlfriend likes to quote me when I said once (in a very questionable state) that “I like the idea of Michael Bourn.” Just because he is bound for regression which we are seeing. But he is objectively a very skilled ball player who is going to be far better than McLouth and the Schafer that we saw so you can’t fault the FO for making a move to fit out needs (though another lefty wasn’t quite perfect, a productive CF was much needed and Bourn represents that.)

I don’t need convincing. I feel the Bourn trade was the right move considering the available options, and our budget restraints.

Doesn’t mean its the best move ever. All I was saying is that it was a good move that fit our needs and my intentions were n ever to convince you because I know that you agree. Doesn’t mean it was a perfect move though, but who ever said that was the standard? And since that isn’t the standard evaluating the aspects of the trade probably aren’t just purely academic.

I hope this team isn't starting their traditional September Slump
followed by an early vacation, because that would be a real shame if they did considering that this team looks 10x better than last season. In fact, this is one of the most complete teams I have seen in a long time, possibly even better than some of those teams during the 14 year run.
Look at this team, they have power, they have speed now, finally, their defense has improved by a large margin compared to last year, they still have a strong bench, and their bullpen has been even better than last year. This team just needs to focus, play hard, and play smart and I can guarantee anybody that they can go all the way this year and compete for a World Series Title.
Well, last year’s team was really derailed by injuries. That hasn’t been the case this year (injuries to Hanson and JJ aside…but both of these are not supposed to be season ending). Knock on wood.
by LEastCoastBears on Sep 5, 2011 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions
I like your arguments, but the Braves bullpen largely consists of gigantic contributions from three players. Outside of Venters, Kimbrel and O’Flaherity the Braves bullpen has been sporadic and possibly even bad in the second half.

I mean this was an unpleasant game but I still have a lot of high hopes. For some reason I think that this team is going to somehow hit a total zone in the last week or two of the season and just be lights out in the post-season. The talent on this team is substantial and the balance is also extraordinary. SP, relief, bench, starters, defense are all strong but we have done such underachieving. A lot of it is a lack of synergy, but I think that if that happens at the right time that this team is absolutely unstoppable.
Unrelated note, how the hell does fangraphs put the Braves #12 on the Power Rankings. I get that it is updated weekly (I assume) and represents trends, but how in the last month of the season do you put a team that has had the success of the Braves at 12th?!

yeah thats nuts
Only 9 teams have a chance to make the playoffs, the al west being the only race not sewn-up (Ignoring NYY and BOS since both will be in). That drove me crazy in the final weeks of the last NBA season when power rankings would come out, and mathematically eliminated teams from the west were ahead of indiana when the power rankings were specifically about who were the best contenders for the title.

Sorry to say this...but
For anyone hoping for Heyward to come around and help this team this year… don’t hold your breathe. He has had all year and has seem to have made no progress. His swing is all screwed up. He should have been sent to the minors where he really could have worked it out. But instead he is here where he doesn’t get enough at bats and is under pressure of being in the spot light. I would love to see it happen, but I just don’t see it happening. All I can do now is hope he gets it worked out in the off-season.
You are right. Heyward continues to get worse instead of better. His swing has looked terrible since April and outside of 1 game every 3 weeks where he seemingly puts together a few good atbats he can sustain nothing. He immediately follows a game where he reaches base multiple times and puts together some encouraging swings and plate appearances with a weeks worth of bad approaches, awful swings, and harmless grounders to second base.
by Tomahawk Mafia on Sep 6, 2011 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions
The thing is that his swing isn’t static over the course of the season. It isn’t even static in the last month. He can improve it, and given his prodigious skill likely will. At this point we don’t need him to come out of the season with great stats, we need him to be productive in the post-season and, if things get tight, at the end of the season. There is plenty of time to fix his swing by then and the primary indicator of his success in this front is his objectively high athleticism.
