Tomahawk Chops: Daily Atlanta Braves News Clippings For Wednesday, September 28th
Your one-page daily morning overview of Atlanta Braves news:
Braves quotes after Tuesday loss to Phillies | Atlanta Braves
Derek Lowe, on his struggles, his mechanical problems: "This is something that I have to hash out in the offseason. By no means am I sitting here saying this year is lost, or a wash. I’ve put myself in bad mechanical places for a long time. But I’ve never given up or quit. I’ve got to keep fighting and figure it out. I see what I’m doing, but there’s a difference in figuring it out and actually doing it when the game starts." "If you’re 9-17 with a 5 ERA, c’mon. I’m not going to sit here and say if I had a bounce here or a bounce there. I’m man enough to sit here and say I’ve had a terrible year. But again, we have a chance. We have our best pitcher going tomorrow. Who knows what’s going to happen tonight [in Cardinals-Astros game]. And again, this isn’t about me, this is about this organization. I know how much hard work these guys have put into the season."
Braves shortstop Alex Gonzalez aggravates right calf strain, exits game | braves.com: News
"I'm not a betting man, but the chances are not good for him [Wednesday]," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Hopefully it's not one of those things that is a lingering thing. Hopefully it's just mild, you give him a couple days and he can bounce back. We'll know more [Wednesday]."
Gonzalez doubtful for Wednesday; Braves call up Pastornicky | Atlanta Braves
Braves shortstop Alex Gonzalez is doubtful for Wednesday’s final game against the Phillies after he had to leave Tuesday night’s game with a strained right calf, the same injury which had kept him out of the final four games of the Braves last road trip. The Braves have called up shortstop prospect Tyler Pastornicky from the Instructional League to give them another shortstop to back up the veteran Jack Wilson Wednesday in Gonzalez’s absence.
Chipper has bone bruise, but stays in lineup | braves.com: News
"[Head athletic trainer] Bubba [Porter] said I should start feeling better around Thanksgiving," Jones said. "I doubt a day here or a day there is going to do much good." Jones seemed to aggravate the knee as he ran from second to third base in the sixth inning of Monday's loss the Phillies. He underwent an X-ray following the game before having the MRI exam Tuesday morning.
Hudson eager to take mound for Wednesday’s finale | Atlanta Braves
"I’m ready," Hudson said after Tuesday’s loss. "I feel good about it. I feel like we’re going to go out there and win the ball game tomorrow. Hopefully with the win it’s a clinch. If not, we’ll go to St. Louis and take care of business there."
Club getting a little help from its friends | braves.com: News
After the Astros claimed a 10-inning win over the Cardinals on Monday night, Braves general manager Frank Wren sent Mills a congratulatory text message. Wren and Mills were roommates while playing for Double-A Memphis in 1980.
Moylan set for surgery Monday | Atlanta Braves
"They’ve got to clean up the labrum and the cuff, and it should be about six months," Moylan said. "As soon as you hear shoulder, the first thing I thought was every other guy who’s ever had to have a shoulder completely repaired has been out for 12 to 18 months. I was fearing the worst." As it is, Moylan said he could be playing catch in as soon as three months.

You know what?

Seriously. I’m sure these guys want it worse than any of us do. If they win, great. If they don’t, life goes on. I’m over it. Whatever happens, I’m cool with it.

This
I was thinking about making a FanPost about it, but really what’s the point?
Last year during the NLDS I got extremely upset that the Braves gave away those last 2 games to the Giants. However, I realized it wasn’t Brooks’ fault. He should not have been in the game with a lead (but that’s another story).
Nothing we say/do can put runs on the board for “our” team. I don’t know about anyone else on this board but I don’t have any invested interest in the Braves. It’s just a hobby I like to keep track of.
That isn’t to say fans can’t and shouldn’t be fans and get into the spirit of the game but damn…..There’s been a lot of over-the-top crap from regulars, non-regulars, and trolls on the board.
It’s OK people. It really is.

Sorry but it was Brooks fault (no I still don’t forgive him). He is a Major League Baseball player. he should be able to make a Pony league play – or at least 1 out of 3 Pony league plays.

I have to confess that I was pretty tough to be around the last two nights, and basically charted the five stages of grief. Last night I was so depressed I didn’t eat dinner. This morning, I awoke to “acceptance.”
I used to be like that. I would get so mad when the Braves lost, I would get angry with my family over anything. Gotta loosen up, you can be upset, but getting that depressed, not good. I dont worry, I dont get scared, and I dont lose sleep over the games any more, I just try to enjoy it while it lasts, because its a long time til next season, and I love baseball.

Not so sure about that
Their body language on the field speaks volumes. And this starts from the top. Every time I see a shot of Fredi in the dugout, he is absolutely emotionless. No reaction whatsoever. No chirping (a la Bobby), no fire, no seeming desire to win. This sort of lolly-gagging does not happen if Bobby is in charge. I think we all remember the day Andruw Jones was yanked mid-game for bagging it.
by aaaaandTheBravesWin on Sep 28, 2011 8:41 AM EDT up reply actions
This is where I call BS.
Bobby Cox, in games in which he was thrown out, won those games at a .386 percentage. So let’s dispell that myth that it was effective right now. Also, didn’t Fredi get fired from his last job because he chose to do the right thing and benched one of his players for lolly-gagging?
I don’t know what the guy can do other than keep his guys loose and stay positive. If the players are struggling with confidence now, imagine if you bench them for the most important game of the year?
How about shuffle the line-up?
If it IS broke, FIX it.

that is a good point
problem is he only has 22 ab’s batting 6th, which is where he has good numbers, he also has good numbers batting at the top of the order (1st)
batting 1st .283 average in 226 abs with 16 walks
batting 2nd .243 average in 272 abs with 17 walks
batting 3rd .143 average in 7 abs with 1 walk
batting 6th .364 average in 22 abs with 0 walks
batting 7th he has a .167 average in 12 abs with 0 walks
Chopmaster: my link is my dad who has watched the braves since I don’t know. he’s 56.
The fact that Fredi completely ignores this is enough for me to jump the Fredi ship. As simple as it sounds, that one change could have completely changed our momentum. The guy is a dumbass.

A lot, they can do a lot.
They are charged with putting players in a position to succeed. This includes setting batting orders, pitching rotations, pinch hitting, relief pitchers, substitutions, calling ‘plays’ … bunts, infield in, infield back, corners in … and more, much much more.

The player’s are the ones on the field of play – not Fredi. The issue now is everybody is pressing – you think Fredi’s is tighter than a nuns a-hole – well, I say, all of the players are worse !!

i think he meant from effects from emotional standpoints
not literally what can he do
Chopmaster: my link is my dad who has watched the braves since I don’t know. he’s 56.
You can’t argue the fact that the Braves look like a lost team. And for me, Fredi will be the fall guy.
And a couple of clarifications:
1) I’m not suggesting Fredi needs to show emotion by getting ejected from a game. But, the perception is that he doesn’t care as much as he should. This is reflected in how the Braves are playing.
2) I’m also not suggesting Fredi pull players from the games right now, especially the most important game of the year. I was making the point that Bobby demanded much more from his players all season long.
by aaaaandTheBravesWin on Sep 28, 2011 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions
I rarely even hear Fredi encouraging the guys. you’d always here Bobby with the “come on ____” and such.
THIS
Bobby was chirping in the dugout all game long.
by aaaaandTheBravesWin on Sep 28, 2011 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions
Fredi is NOT Bobby.
And neither is any other potential manager out there. If you wanting ejections and chirping, hire Bobby.
by Aaron Meier on Sep 28, 2011 10:15 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Again
I am using Bobby as an example of how a manager does what his title states: manage. He was outwardly encouraging, he was outwardly demanding, and, yes, he even got ejected from a record number of games standing up for his players.
I am not suggesting we rehire him. As a matter of fact, I think Bobby left at the right time. I just want a manager who doesn’t always look like a deer in headlights or a goatee-wearing corpse. And I want a manager who attempts to use some logical strategy during a game.

Fredi is a young manager who still learning the craft and making mistakes.
Who are you going to replace him with that will come in and not make any mistakes in his first year with the club?
Give me proof that he is learning. Fredi has shown the same tendencies over 161 games this season. The only way I have seen him evolve as a manager is to tighten up now, when we need him the most.
As far as who should replace him (assuming we don’t win the WS), I’ll leave that up to FW et al.
by aaaaandTheBravesWin on Sep 28, 2011 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions
first off
he has changed the lineup a lot more, maybe not past week or so, but he has changed it, he had a set lineup for the first month
a lot less bunting believe it or not, i remember 2-3 bunts a game, now i will see the occasional sacrafice, and now it is usually at the proper time
quick hook on Lowe last night (albeit maybe not quick enough)
EOF in the 6th the other day in a high pressure situation rather than waiting because he is a “7th inning guy”
Chopmaster: my link is my dad who has watched the braves since I don’t know. he’s 56.
Valid points. I can’t say that there is absolutely no evidence of him learning. But for the most part, Fredi just seems to be “changing,” not “evolving/learning.”
And when scoring runs is at a premium, the manager is even more crucial to success (ie, manufacturing runs and protecting leads). I haven’t seen Fredi do much of this in our recent slump.
by aaaaandTheBravesWin on Sep 28, 2011 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions
to be fair
there hasn’t been much of a chance, our woes are because we cant hit a ball in the outfield with <2 outs risp, we tend to all K or popup or GIDP, he has put the steal on to try to help and it has worked sometimes and not worked, etc. Not much a manager can do when the team doesn’t perform when put in a position to succeed
Chopmaster: my link is my dad who has watched the braves since I don’t know. he’s 56.
The blame certainly doesn’t fall squarely on Fredi’s shoulders. The players have to play the game. I just feel that the manager is a critical part in the team’s success or failure.
I think we can agree on the bottom line; the Braves aren’t playing well.
by aaaaandTheBravesWin on Sep 28, 2011 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions
Replace Fredi?
Eddie Perez
Ned Yost
Terry Pendleton
Joe Simpson (only slightly kidding)
Sure there are many many more qualified candidates. Its not rocket surgery you know….just have to be able to handle different personalities and know basic baseball strategy – which Frediot does not.
- ChillyMutt
If (......IF) we make the playoffs, hopefully Meds gets Lowe's starts. I've had enough.
By refusing to shake up the line-up (or put guys where they are more productive in the line-up) and not starting Ross any, if ever, during Mac’s horrendous slide, Fredi has shoved this team’s chances right out the door while running them into the ground.
People will be placing blame left and right, but you have to shake things up when you’re playing this shitty. And he hasn’t done that. And we have remained very, very shitty.
The silver lining is both pitching match-ups tonight for Atlanta and Houston.
If we see that same line-up tonight though, which, I’m sure we will, this takes away from what Huddy is trying to do (Win) and drastically reduces our chances further.

So true. Braves batters look like they are just going through the motions. This is where good coaching, good managing come into play. Sometimes a player or team just needs to be reminded of basics. Work the count, wait for YOUR pitch, if they want to give you an out – take it. They all know this but when you are in a funk like the Braves, sometimes you are too close to see it yourself.
- ChillyMutt
I stopped watching when it was 6-0, but I would be extremely surprised if any of our guys took a walk.
I’m with Will Smith. I emotionally detached myself from this team (mostly from our coaching staff) about a week ago. If they survive another game, then so be it.
Completely different team from last year. Losing Vazquez and Infante was the beginning of the end, anway. Regardless if some people will admit to that, or not. The contract we gave Lowe to keep him off of the Mets was a kick to our own ass.

The $15 mil is a sunk cost.
We owe it regardless. So pay it, and then play the guys who have the best chance of helping us win. If that means Lowe gets assigned to the Mexican League, so be it.
I’m sure that Lowe will be in the rotation next year (actually, I’m certain of it….) but
Huddy
Jurrjens
Hanson
Delgado
Teheran
(Medlen)
would be that much better.

I really like Lowe, and think he might fix his issues, but we have much better pitchers available next year, I hope Wren can move Lowe.
"First!"...Who gives a damn if you are first
Everybody knows the Braves predicament with him, and the fact that we will want someone to eat at least half (if not more) of his $$$.
I still believe that Lowe would be a great fit for someone like the Yankees or Red Sox (teams where ample runs are commonplace) but I think that they know if he stays with Atl, he’ll be pitching throughout the year, bc that’s how we roll.
I don’t see us pulling a KK with him. You’ll just hear alot about "next time, " “next time,” etc.

Ah crap, I forgot him completely.
Embarrassment of riches we have – no way Lowe should crack that rotation.
beachy.......
Will be in there. I gotta believe either Teheran or Delgado begins the year in AAA with Vizcaino. Probably Teheran since Delgado has proven he has the mental makeup to pitch in the bigs. Teheran will be ready to step in when Hanson goes down again(as he continues to Kerry Wood his arm).

Yup.
Can’t keep doing the same thing every day and expecting different results. Lineup needs to be shaken up significantly – try something different. I’d run:
Bourn CF
Constanza RF
Uggla 2B
Freeman 1B
Chipper 3B
McCann C
Prado LF
Wilson SS
out there and see what happens. Damn the matchups, damn the l/r splits. Worst that happens is we get shut out and look putrid, which is already happening anyway.
Frediot tried Constanza in the #2 hole earlier in the swoon. He is in no way shape or form a #2 hitter. He will thrive in the lead off position though where his game of infield hits, bunts for hits and slaps work well.
- ChillyMutt
I hear you, but...
Right now Prado isn’t a #2 hitter in any way, shape or form either. The ideal guy in that spot would be Chipper, but he’s playing on one leg.
I’d try out Georgie in that spot (he was only there for a few games before), and let him act as a second leadoff hitter. IOW if Bourn doesn’t get on, Georgie goes up and treats the AB just like he would as a leadoff man, with the bunts and slap hits and whatnot.
It could be a failure, but at this point we’re already failing.
Uggla 3rd?
How many pitches has he seen during the last week?
6….?
Maybe 7.
He’s regressed to the Heyward line.

Medlen's not stretched out to start.
But if Lowe ever takes the mound for the Braves in a key spot again, multiple someones in the organization are brain-dead. Hudson, Beachy, Minor and Delgado ALL give us a better shot to win than Lowe does.
Fredi, Parrish, Tosca
I don’t see how any of these 3 survive after this season – short of winning the World Series. And Mcdowell might want to pollishup that resume as well

Does McDowell ever even watch games, or is he just constantly taking notes?

Morning question
My buddy asked me this morning if the sad reality is, maybe the Braves aren’t really that good a team. Take away a few games early in the season, and the time during Uggla’s hitting streak, and they really haven’t hit well as a team this year. I dont know, but I can tell how darn frustrating it is. Last night was just sad. We could only manage one run? As much as I wanted the Braves to make the playoffs, I have to wonder if they do, will a magic switch will flip and all of a sudden they will start scoring, and scoring a lot. Your not going to beat teams like the Brewers and the Phillies, with one or two runs on the board, and no way you beat an AL team like that. I would like to believe the Braves want it, I just dont see the hunger. Look at St Louis, they have come from behind the last two games, sure they lost one, but that is the definition of “wanting it”. Anyway, I told my buddy, there is still one game left, and getting on a roll has to start with one game. He laughed, but it starts somewhere. Now that I have vented, I dont feel any better. Not ready for the season to be over.

It's very simple....
Whatever approach “LP” has floating through these guys’ heads is the wrong one.
Maybe it’s deeper…. Maybe this staff puts entirely too much emphasis on pitching and doesn’t spend enough time on hitting.

I agree with the 2nd one not so much the first
how do we even know LP is approaching aggressiveness, maybe our players have just taken to it this year, maybe Uggla was preaching aggressiveness, LP will of course be the scapegoat for our offensive troubles, just like TP was last year, but I don’t think a different hitting coach would make our hitting significantly better, the players have to learn and adjust.
Chopmaster: my link is my dad who has watched the braves since I don’t know. he’s 56.
guys who were around last year changed their approaches and got worse. that has to be attributed to the hitting coach. either for preaching it, or not correcting it.
sure, but all the blame shouldn't be on the coach
how do we know he isn’t preaching patience right now just the players are in a funk? It is up to the players to change or correct thier approach, all LP could do is inform them about it, and there is no possible way to prove that he isn’t doing that unless he or a player comes out saying he is preaching be extremely aggressive.
Chopmaster: my link is my dad who has watched the braves since I don’t know. he’s 56.
I definitely see where you’re coming from, but we needed a new hitting coach 2 months ago.
We took more walks in a month last year than we’ve probably taken all year long.
Our collective approach at the plate has been this: hack at anything that moves, even 3-0 counts.

It’s just turned so ugly and (imo) this batting order that Fredi is fixated upon sets us up for failure before Chipper even gets to the plate.
Prado.
Cannot.
Bat.
2nd.
We strung together some wins recently where he was dropped in the order and Chipper was 2nd.
At this point though, it’s all or nothing. And Fredi is an idiot. Anybody else would have given Uggla a day off by now. And when you have guys like Uggla and Heyward in the line-up (that might hit a bomb here or there but whose avg is for shit) it’s going to snowball pretty quickly, as it has….

that all of these guys went into the same kind of slump at the same time for no reason. It says they are all being instructed to hit this way by the same person.
Seriously, i don’t think Larry is talking to hitters at all. Hitters show likeness to a rudderless ship. I would venture to guess that for some reason he has been instructed not to tamper with them.Just an educated guess.

Granted just a guess. But hitters are not adjusting Heyward is still away from the plate and trying to pull that pitch down and away. Top to bottom – no one in the line up is really working counts. Everyone is hacking at the first pitch near the strike zone. Earmarks of hitters without guidance.

I agree
but having a good team on paper vs. having a good team in reality, not always the same. I think they need to get rid of this “professional” clubhouse crap. If the guys want to blast music before the game let them. How are you supposed to get loose and pumped up if you have to walk like that.

Sad reality is the braves stats show that they are not that good
Our team offensive stats speak for themselves, BA .243 5th worst in both leagues, team obp is a weak .308. also about 5th worst, as for ops it’s a very medocre .696, pitching been holding us up, but their era is increasing because of injuries and fatigue plus just too old to be a starter anymore(Lowe).

This, all of this, is a joke- right? Oh well. Please just win and get in. The playoffs are one thing I would actually keep up with and Braves Baseball would be nice to see for one more time. For Riley, Llamasauraus, Capt’n Caveman, and the inevitable “this is relevant to my interests” post that will come from Smoltz’s Beard. If only for that.
Win please. Damnit

He could probably do it well, without even putting much thought into it.
Better than Fredi and LP anyway. Guaranteed.

he kind of already is
all the time players are talking about going to him for hitting advice, while he might not have all the time to be the hitting coach, he is still helping. It just hasn’t amounted to much

Great moments are born from great opportunity and that’s what you have here tonight boys. That’s what you’ve earned here tonight. One game. If we had played them 10 times they might win 9. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight we run with them. Tonight we stay with them and we shut them down because we can.
Tonight we are the greatest baseball team in the world. You were born to be baseball players, everyone one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time.Their time is done. It’s over.
I’m sick and tired of hearing what a great baseball team the Phillies/Cardinals have. Screw ’em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it.
My apologies to the Brook’s family for editing the speech so as to fit a baseball scenario. Believe in miracles Braves nation. The 1980 Soviet olympic hockey team sure found out. Go Braves!!

It was obvious last night.
Rays WIN!
Sox WIN!
Cards WIN!
And the Braves DIDN’T EVEN COMPETE.
The other 3 teams are the frickin WILD CARD competitors…which means that the YANKEES, TIGERS, BREWERS, PHILLIES, RANGERS and DIAMONDBACKS are even better than them.
NO WAY we win a game in the postseason…so we mind as well collapse and choke now so that Fredi gets canned.
Chicken pot, chicken pot, chicken pot pie!!
Better to lose in the NLDS
Than to be lumped with the 2007 Mets as epic playoff race collapses, IMO
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

and even better to win the NLDS, anything could happen

At least we could keep the rap of choking in the playoffs, as opposed to before the playoffs.
And like most people say, “anything is possible in the playoffs”

Who would give up more runs?
Lowe or a Hitting Tee? I say Lowe…but it could be close. I just don’t understand why we keep running him out there every 5 days after he obviously is slumping….We needed a win and we have Tehran sitting after he went 15-3 in AAA. Most organizations would have saved face by reporting that Lowe had a slight groin pull and would miss his start etc.
Desperation from Day One......let's not wait until the end!
Throwing in the towel...
We don’t have the starting pitching right now to be a playoff team. The Cardinals have one decent starter, but they hit the ball. The Braves played over their head all season because Hanson, Jurrjens, Beachy, and Hudson were pitching well. The offense sucked all season. We won games because of great starting pitching and exceptional bullpen work.
With the injuries to the starters this is a bad baseball team and a team that has no shot at making a splash in the playoffs. I
Twitter:ChopAttack
Our SP isn't so bad.
Minus Lowe. A rotation of Huddy, Beachy, Minor & Delgado isn’t dominant but it can be competitive in a post-season series.
The bigger problem right now is that the offense is terrible, even against mediocre pitching. Can’t win without scoring.
These guys aren’t pitching past the 5th inning. The Braves pitching needs to be dominant because the offense is one of the worst in baseball.
Twitter:ChopAttack
Hanson & JJ weren’t going all that deep into games either, and Minor and Delgado have been starting mostly in September when we have more bullpen arms available. In the post-season there are enough days off that if they can just give us 5 quality innings the bullpen can manage the rest.
Earlier in the year we were squeaking out 3-4 runs of support for our SP, though. Lately we get 5 IP, 2 ER from the starters, and they leave down 2-0. At some point if we don’t put up runs, it doesn’t matter how good or bad the pitching is.
Time to throw away that twitter account!

The thing that cracks me up (not really) about the Phillies
is that Ruiz, Polanco, and Ibanez absolutely pwn the Braves.
I’m serious when I say, they probably kept Ibanez on partly because of how he dismantles the Braves. Clutch is an understatement.

We’re going to win tonight folks. We have our best pitcher on the mound, and we are 1-4 in the last 5 games. That means our last win was with Huddy pitching. He’s going to put in a good performance. Even the Braves can go 2-4 in the last 6 games.
We will win tonight!!
Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.
I really like to think we’ll win tonight, too…..
The key to it is this….
The Cardinals need to lose. We need to avoid any kind of one game playoff with those guys. And on paper, I could see a Braves W and Cards L tonite.
