Around SBN: How NBA Draft Lottery Results Affect Prospects' High Hopes

Philadelphia Batters Atlanta 7-1.

Once again, Derek Lowe just didn't have it.

Another key game, another bad loss. The Phillies battered Braves starter Derek Lowe and Atlanta's bats were nowhere to be found as Philadelphia beat Atlanta 7-1.

Lowe struggled from the start, giving up a first inning home run to Chase Utley to make it a 1-0 game early.

Philly added to its lead in the third inning, as Carlos Ruiz doubled to start the frame and Roy Oswalt reached on a sacrifice bunt that advanced Ruiz to third. Jimmy Rollins followed with a single, scoring Ruiz to make it a 2-0 game and putting runners on first and second.

Back-to-back sacrifice flies advanced Oswalt to third and scored him to up the lead to 3-0.

Shane Victorino singled to start the top of the fourth inning, and he advanced to third on a single from Raul Ibanez. Victorino came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Placido Polanco. Polanco's fly ball upped the Phillies lead to 4-0.

Rollins singled to start the fifth inning and chased Lowe from the game. Lowe finished with a line of 4 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.

Arodys Vizcaino followed in relief of Lowe and gave up a two-run homer to Hunter Pence two batters later. Pence's blast made it a 6-0 game.

Rollins added a home run off Julio Teheran in the seventh inning to make it a 7-0 game. Martin Prado homered in the bottom of the ninth, a solo shot, to keep Atlanta from being shutout.

St. Louis and Houston are currently tied at 5 in the fifth inning in Houston, so let's go Astros.

after the Phillies went up 3-0, my friend texted me and said we should take out Lowe

I told him it really didn’t matter because a 3 run lead might as well be a 30 run lead the way we are swinging the bats right now. I took a nap instead of watching the last 5 innings of the game so I could stay up and watch the Astros game. At least they have some sack and some pride.

Yeah, well

Fredi not known for his hunches. In fact, he should probably just go against whatever hunch he has, as it would probably produce better results.

Bobby Cox would have done the same thing.

He showed more loyalty to players who were sucking D than Fredi G has this year. Lay off of Fredi. It’s not his fault the players can’t hit, the pitchers can’t pitch, and the bullpen (besides venters, kembrel, and Eric O) sucks ass. And the reason Johnny, Craig, and Eric have sucked recently is because we have no one else in the bullpen that is reliable.

by BravesFanScout on Sep 27, 2011 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Actually, we have tons of reliable guys in the bullpen, but Fredi refuses to use them.

by KINGSLYTUT on Sep 27, 2011 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Who else is reliable? Because i haven't really seen that many reliable guys.

Fredi does not suck! Is it his fault that we can’t score with the bases loaded and no out? Is it his fault that our starting pitchers can’t go 7 innings to rest our bullpen guys? Is it his fault Jason Heyward has sucked ass? Is it his fault that JJ and Tommy Hanson went down? Was it his fault that Kimbrel blew that 2 run lead to St Louis a few weeks ago? I don’t think so. THe players play the game and they have been choking on a fat D.

by BravesFanScout on Sep 28, 2011 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

Vavaro, Medlen, EOF, Kimbrel, Venters, Sherril, Vizcaino, Martinez, Gearin, etc – all are reliable.

You’ll notice that there really is only one name missing – Linebrink. And yet, who has pitched in the most games recently? Linebrink.

And yes, it is Fredi’s fault that the starters can’t go 7 – because he pulls them in the 5th and 6th innings with low pitch counts.

No, it’s not his fault that we can’t score with runners on, but it is his fault that we give away outs in nearly every situation possible by trying to bunt. It’s also his fault that he has our worst hitter hitting in the most important spot in the lineup.

Jason Heyward has not sucked ass. In fact, he’s been pretty average. Now Prado has sucked – in fact, he has worse numbers than Heyward – as does Alex Gonzalez and George Constanza and Matt Diaz – and yet, it’s those guys who are playing instead of Heyward. That’s Fredi’s fault.

It’s not Fredi’s fault that JJ and Tommy went down. But it is Fredi’s fault that he hasn’t replaced Lowe in the rotation, and that he allowed Derek Lowe, our WORST pitcher (probably worse than Linebrink) to pitch in THE most important game of the season. That’s Fredi’s fault.

It’s also Fredi’s fault that O’Ventebrel is obviously out of gas. He used them at EVERy opportunity, whether it was high-leverage (completely appropriate) or with 4 run leads, or when down a few runs (Completely NOT appropriate).

It’s also Fredi’s fault that Larry Parrish is our hitting coach. It’s Fredi’s fault that he burns through our bench by sending up a switch-hitting pinch hitter, then recalling that pinch hitter after he has been announced and the other team makes a pitching change, thus burning 3 players in one move.

THAT is Fredi’s fault.

Yeah, I looked it up too. lol

Point is, Ross is our best bat off the bench, and McCann is obviously struggling. Clearly, he won’t get tomorrow off, but why do we even pay our backup catcher as much as we do, and why do we carry a 3rd catcher if we are never going to use David Ross.

Heap could have used some days off over the past couple of weeks. We have a perfectly capable backup.

It’s just another spoke in the growing wheel of Fredi mistakes.

In September alone, they have had games in which they’ve gone 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, 0-for-9, 0-for-10, 1-for-10, 2-for-12, and the topper, 3-for-20.

The Braves have gone 1-4 in their past five games and hit .188 with 10 runs. Four of those games were against the Marlins and Nationals. Two more teams going nowhere but home in a few days.

They have hit .181 (32-for-177) with runners in scoring position during the month of September.

Really? It's his fault that the lineup hasn't produced shit?

It’s his fault we can’t hit with RISP? How do you know that the coaches are teaching and aggressive hitting philosophy? Are you in the clubhouse? With almost the exact same lineup, our OBP as a team has dropped 30 points since TP left. I’d say that a hitting coach has more to do with a player’s approach than you are giving credit for.

Exact same lineup?

Even if the personnel are similar now to last September, are you saying that 2010 Freeman is the same as 2011 Freeman? Or Heyward, Prado, and McCann? Not to mention replacing Melky/Ankiel/McLouth with Bourn, goodPrado with Uggla, or Glaus/Lee/ with Freeman.

I gonna go out on a limb and say this lineup is nothing like 2010’s lineup.

5/8 position players are the exact same. The other three, we replaced Melky/Diaz with Uggla, McLouth with Bourn and Glaus/Lee with Freeman – all upgrades.

So with an upgraded linup, we have a worse OBP…that certainly supports my theory.

This

His LD% is down, GB% is up, K rate is up, HR/FB is down.

It’s all BABIP related. Hits are falling, for one reason or another, and it’s not related to batted ball profiles. The walk rate is really the only thing that’s changed for the negative.

No one likes that explanation, but anyone worth his salt in analysis will say it’s simply a matter of luck.

2012 Looks Promising

We’re going to get to find out how much the front office cares about winning by two important measures:

The presence of or lack thereof of Derek Lowe and Larry Parrish.

It may seem over reactionary to declare that “Lowe must go” at any cost, but I think we’ve reached that point. It is clear that his pitching ability has fallen below acceptable standards for a mid-market team that will have an average level of offense. Hudson, Hanson, Beachy, Minor, and JJ/Teheran/Delgado is solid; holding any of them back for Lowe is enormously detrimental to the strength of the club.

September has been a combination of horrible play and horrible luck. Today was the last day that the Braves controlled their own destiny and management decided to let our worst pitcher take the ball. I don’t know what to say about that. The Cardinals are about to win, pulling us into a tie with one game left. I fully expect to remain tied after tomorrow and lose in St. Louis on Thursday. I want the Braves to win but I don’t see how this team can. Changes are needed for 2012.

forced BP to pitch more as the young guys can’t go more than 5-6. Bats started being icy around the same time… Yeah, we ran out of gas all right.

by mebravesfan on Sep 27, 2011 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

It was really the injuries to JJ and Hanson, or their decreased effectiveness (whatever the reason).

If you look at our scores minus the few weeks when Uggla and Georgie went berserk, we basically won by getting shutdown pitching and scoring a few garbage runs on homers.

Now, when Minor/Delgado are giving up a few more than JJ/Hanson would have, when Lowe craps the bed every start, and when Beachy hasn’t had a good start in a while, our offense is exposed for the black hole it is. And that’s the difference.

by Ivan the Great on Sep 27, 2011 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

No the offense is the real issue. 2010 Braves OBP .339, 2011 Braves OBP .309.

Thinking JJ would give up less than Minor/Delgado is just faulty thinking. JJ was lucky then stopped being lucky.

by ATLtruth on Sep 27, 2011 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not so sure it was luck. He somehow started to have ridiculous control this season. When his control left, his numbers suffered.

He basically had the same sort of strand rates as the rest of his career. It was the walks, or lack thereof, that made the difference.

Jurrjens, DID, however, give up less than Minor/Delgado. I’m not speaking in terms of predictive stats, I’m speaking in terms of what actually happened.

The offense has been asstastic for much of the year. The difference is that, when you get 7 shutout or 1-run innings, an asstastic offense isn’t as much of a liability as when you allow 2-3 runs each game (or, if you start Lowe, 15).

by Ivan the Great on Sep 27, 2011 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Losing Jurrjens and Hanson hurt

But make no mistake, they had plenty of chances to score gobs of runs and never did. I’ll give Fredi a pass on this season, but Larry Parrish has got to be fired after this mess.

By that logic, the Cardinals don’t deserve to make the playoffs because they were bad for a month too.

Call me a moron, but the Braves are still the favorites in this.

Tim Hudson’s pitching tomorrow. The Braves are 3-7 in their last 10 games. Hudson’s made 2 starts in that stretch and they are 2-0 in those games. The Phillies are throwing out Joe Blanton and the bullpen for 9 innings. Cole Hamels is only going to pitch one inning if the Phillies have a lead so Charlie can try to pad his win total.

The Cardinals have to face Brett Myers, who is right up there with Javier Vazquez as the best NL pitchers in September. Myers is 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA in September and the Astros are 5-0 in his last 5 starts. Rafael Furcal and Matt Holliday are out for the final game. If Chris Carpenter gets knocked around and/or doesn’t go at least 7 innings, they are screwed because La Russa has gassed the bullpen for nearly 12 innings in 2 games.

Still favors the Braves, but they are definitely capable of screwing it up.

I think I’m usually one of the more positive people on here… I’m actually positive to the point where I yell at people too much about how they’re being negative (sorry). But in the end…

It all comes down to 162. We’re gonna have a great pitcher on the mound and a great bullpen behind him and an offensive lineup that is absolutely capable of producing plenty of runs if everybody get’s their heads out of their asses. We clinched on day 162 last year… and if it happens again this year the season will still have been worth all the time in effort we all put into watching it (I mean… I’ve seen 120+ games this year and I’m sure some people on here have seen more).

It’s pretty simple isn’t it?

I Don't Understand

What’s with all the hate going around for Fredi Gonzalez? I really don’t understand it. Of course he has made questionable decisions, all managers do, but let me take a moment to break down some of the most common attacks on Fredi.

1. The top of the list recently has been the fact that he keeps starting D-Lowe. Who else can he start every fifth day? Hanson and Jurrjens are injured, Teheran’s innings are being limited so he’s done. That leaves Huddy, Beachy, Minor, Delgado, and…..yeah, that’s it. As bad as he has been, we don’t have any other options for that every-fifth-game. None of that is Fredi’s fault. He didn’t get Hanson and JJ injured, he didn’t put a cap on Teheran’s innings, and he didn’t cause Lowe to completely lose any semblance of being a major league pitcher.

2. The lineups. Lately I have seen more complaining here about lineups than at Little League games when parents wonder why their kid isn’t batting higher in the order. Someone complains that Chipper is batting second and not in a run-producing slot. Then someone asks why Prado is batting second, moving Chipper to third in the order. B-Mac struggles and people say drop him in the order, then people complain when he is dropped in the order. Fredi played Constanza when he was hot, benched him when it was apparent that he had, in fact, come back down to Earth. Some people complained that Fredi took too long to bench him, some complained that he should have left him in there because J-Hey wasn’t doing very well. My personal preference would be to move Heyward up in the lineup to bat second again, especially since he is getting on base a lot lately. Pretty much Bourn, Heyward, Chipper, Mac, Uggla, Freeman, Prado, Gonzalez. That’s just something I would try, but other lineups could work just as well. You can’t change the lineup the next day if one doesn’t work. Ball players are creatures of habit, they have to get used to those types of things, then if it still isn’t working you change it again.

3. Bullpen use. Alright, yes, Fredi has mismanaged the bullpen at times. I can’t really blame him on the over-use of O’Ventbrel in the first part of the season. With as automatic as they were, I would have run them out there any time the game was close, even sometimes when it wasn’t just to be sure. The Proctologist ordeal, yeah, that was painful to watch, but Wren and Fredi eventually did the right thing. They made sure they were confident in their younger bullpen arms before they finally cut ties with the batting practice Juggs machine that was Scott Proctor, though they should have done so much sooner. It seems to me like our bullpen is fantastic when we have a lead, especially a large one, but when we are tied or behind they often seem to give up a few runs (example: tonight’s game). That scares me a little, but cannot be blamed on Fredi.

Could Fredi have done a better job this year? Absolutey. Does he deserve to be fired if the Braves don’t make the playoffs? Absolutely not. There is still (at least) one game left. This has been an epic collapse, but is not entirely the fault of the manager. Personally, I would like to see one of the veteran players (yes, Larry, I’m looking your way here) to actually get riled up in the clubhouse for once and light a fire under these guys. They have been way too calm in my opinion. Not panicking is a good thing, but being too calm can will lead to complacency, and complacency kills teams.

Constanza never came down to earth

He injured his ankle in Chicago and he was never given a chance to play everyday again after that. The team went downhill fast when Constanza stopped being a piece of the puzzle.

But, I do tend to think that I understand the game of baseball, and that it makes more sense to play the better players and not bench them – especially benching them in favor of lesser talent and production.

Call me crazy, but in a playoff push, I want the best players out there.

I see that you have nothing to post other than asinine comments about me being related to a guy whom I have defended, based solely on his production, so I am assuming that the discussion is over.

I disagree with every point you make.

1. Teheran, Vizcaino, Medlen, Martinez, hell, anyone but D Lowe. He is easily our worst pitcher with the possibly exception of Linebrink. And it’s not that he pitches Lowe in the rotation. That’s actually fine. But he pitched Lowe, the worst possible option, in the BIGGEST game of the year. We had virtually no shot at winning this game the moment he took the mound.

2. Benching Heyward, who has been better than Gonzalez, Prado, Constanza, Diaz, Hinske, and anyone else who has started over him, is a stupid move. Prado has been worse than Heyward, yet not only does Prado play every day, he hits in the most important spot in the lineup! That has hurt our offense significantly more than Heyward.

3. He has mismanaged the Bullpen all season – not just “at times.” He has used Venters and Kimbrel in games with 4 and 5 run leads. He constantly overworked them pre-ASB, and he DIDN’T use them in certain high-leverage situations post-ASB because he was trying to not overuse them. That’s completely illogical.

Does Fredi deserve to be fired? I don’t know. You tell me one good thing he has done this season. Just one…

I do agree at this point Prado needs to be batting down in the order or something, no way he should be batting 2nd right now.

Sure, Fredi has overworked the bullpen that we ALL knew would hurt us sometime in September and or October. And, yes he has pitched them in some games that he had no business even pitching them in. But, the majority though, he has had to pitch them a lot cause of the close games and the ineptitude of our offense too.

Fredi def deserves some blame, because he could try to do something with the freaking lineup right now, and I totally expected Lowe to pitch bad, I was hoping he wouldn’t, but figured he would. The hitters also deserve blame, loading the bases with 0 out and not scoring and the countless runners LOB is crap. So much blame is deserved to go around, not one soul person responsible for this crap that has happened this month.

That's why he gets paid though

Sure, it’s not his fault when someone fails to drive in a run. However, he is the Manager. He has to shoulder the responsibility.

If one of my workers does something wrong, I get blamed for it. Did I have anything to do with it? No. But, because I’m their boss, I have the responsibility to ensure that they do what they are supposed to do.

Sure, he should get a lot of blame, but no way he deserves all the blame. That’s a bit ridiculous. These hitters are making a lot of money, they gotta be able to get some timely hits, and make their own damn luck. The hitters in my opinion deserve just as much blame as Fredi, plain and simple.

But the problem is far worse than just the offense failing in run-scoring situations.

I agree about Fredi not really what we need. I think we need someone else. Would love a manager that is in-between Ozzie Guillen and Fredi with the players. Be a guy that will be a players manager like fredi, but at same time expects results, but not as fiery as Ozzie is. I like Ozzie, but he is just a lil over the top for most tastes. And also a guy that actually won’t use the good BP members in meaningless games and would do a few other things that smart managers would do, but their aren’t too many great managers out there though…

I don’t dislike Ozzie, I just think he can warm out his welcome quickly and some players would get tired of it. If you could actually find a manager that is similar to fredi and bobby was with the relationship with the players, but also will want you to show results and also can manage a bullpen and other aspects that Fredi is inept about, then that would be a perfect manager for Braves. I just don’t know where the hell you gonna find that at though…

I Still Respectfully Disagree

1. Teheran’s innings have been limited, Vizcaino is a reliever now and it would have taken a couple weeks to stretch him out into the starter’s role again, Medlen has been hurt and doesn’t have the stamina to be a starter right now, and Martinez could give the team a solid 4 but then we get into that overworked bullpen very early in the game. I don’t agrree that this was the biggest game of the year. Today’s game is the biggest game of the year, and (if needed) the play-in game will be. We had virtually no shot to win the game when we scored one run.

2. When Constanza was hot he was a much better option than Heyward, Gonzalez plays a different position altogether so I don’t see how he could have been benched in favor of Heyward, Diaz has been very good against lefties since rejoining the Braves, and Hinske was very for the first part of the season. You have to play the hot hand and it never seemed like Jason got hot. Yes, his OBP is good (especially considering his BA), but he hasn’t driven in many runs, his power numbers are down this year, he isn’t much of a base-stealing threat, and he often seems to GIDP which kills rallies. Prado has also struggled this year and Fredi did take him out for a few games here and there, and I agree that he could have been rested a little more often to clear his head and let him get back in the groove.

3. So, realizing that you made a mistake and then working to make amends for that mistake is illogical? People complained about the overuse pre-ASB, like you said. They wanted Fredi to have more confidence in the other bullpen options. He gave other bullpen options their shots and most of them were average at best: Sherrill, Linebrink, Proctor, Martinez was good but you don’t want to waste your emergency long relief guy. Now Varvaro is pitching fairly well, Vizzy has been good, there are finally other legitimate options in the pen and so Fredi has tried to give the big 3 a bit of a break, especially since they haven’t been themselves lately.

Fredi has been at the helm as the Braves have made a push toward the playoffs. I don’t see how that’s not good enough. I didn’t necessarily expect to win the WS this year, though I was optimistic (and it could still happen). One year is not long enough of a tenure to fire someone over, unless we lost 120 games. Let him get adjusted to the team and vice versa. What about all those walk-offs and late game pinch hitters that came through? Would you say that Fredi made the right call on them? Sticking with Uggla and Conrad through their struggles until they both (finally) remembered who they were, wasn’t that a good move? He’s not my favorite manager by any stretch of the imagination, and I’m not even saying he is good. I just believe it is unfair to blame this collapse completely on him.

We have Tim Hudson pitching for us now, so if we still end up losing this game and cards win, then they would have deserved to make it. This game will tell me a lot though. With our best SP(right now) going and likely blanton, hamels going 2-3 innings each and their bullpen guys coming in, we should be able to get some runs and really do some things. I think Hudson will pitch a great game and keep us in the game. We will see how our offense does and if they actually want it bad enough, if they can’t score but 1 or 2 runs off of the Phillies on Wednesday, then that says it all right there…

A question for the anti-Fredi guys

List a couple of names of potential managers you would like to see replace him. It’s a totally pointless exercise but so is most of what we do here.

I wanted TP to step in when Cox left. He is still my preferred candidate but I think his standing with the fanbase is probably too poisoned after last year. (In a more just world, he’d be late to the park every day because of having to fight through crowds of people apologizing to him, but that’s not going to happen.)

As I’m typing this, I see that Justin has listed Terry Francona. I would be pretty damn pleased if he wound up here but that’s probably too much to hope for.

I’ve long thought Chris Chambliss would make a fine MLB manager. He has history here, both as a player and a coach and was the Yankees’ hitting coach in the mid 90’s, so he’s clearly a guy who counsels patience and a smart approach at the plate.

Lastly, I would be fine with Don Baylor. It’s clear that we should have given him an offer to be the hitting coach here last offseason and his results in this year in Phoenix are similar to the good work he did here in ’99.

Chime in with some people who would be an improvement over Fredi but don’t list them all because the server might crash.

not to burst your bubble, but most of those names would be damn similar to Fredi, or should I say worse? I know, I know, a bold statement, but guys like Wagner, Murphy and those types, have they ever managed even a A ball team? I don’t know, but hard to just say some of these guys would be improvements. Be nice for some to at least get some experience in the minors or something, before throwing them into the fire and saying, well here you go, go manage a MLB team that has aspirations of winning a World Series.

I don’t see a problem either. The BP is probably the one thing a manager can really screw up with mismanagement. Hitters and starting pitchers are gonna get the same amount of playing time league wide. Misuse of a bullpen can rot a team. Having a bullpen guy in there might work. In Fredi’s defense, its hard not to use your best guys on a team that plays as many close games as the Braves. But he has used our guys in games they weren’t needed.

I doubt he would do it until his kids get a little older but I would love to see Tommy manage. And I would love to see John’s intensity manifest itself in that role.

I didn’t mention Eddie before but he was a close second to TP on my wish list last year.

You mentioning Boog reminds me of the discussion that ensued when someone floated the idea a few years ago to Skip that he should manage. He said he wasn’t too wild about the idea of sporting a uniform in public.
