Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves Series Preview

The Braves need to pick up wins against the Phillies to keep the smiles coming.

Well, this is it ladies and gentlemen.

After losing two of three to the Washington Nationals and seeing its wild card lead shrink to one game, Atlanta welcomes the Phillies to Turner Field for a regular season ending three-game series.

Since clinching the National League East, Philadelphia has gone 1-9, mainly using a mix and matched lineup at the plate. They used their full lineup for the first time since clinching on Sunday, and broke out of their offensive slump with nine runs and 19 hits against the New York Mets.

So, here's where it stands: A one-game lead with three games against the Phillies while the surging Cardinals play three against the cellar dwelling Houston Astros. Should be a very interesting week in Braves country.

Pitching match-ups after the jump.

This matchup could change. The Phillies will have a bullpen game of sorts, where it looks like a mixture of Worley, Hamels, and the Philly pen could throw. For Atlanta, if it clinches the wildcard before this game, you could see either Tommy Hanson or Jair Jurrjens starting here if either one of them is deemed healthy enough.

Series Outlook:

Who knows. Bottom line, Atlanta needs to win games and the rest will take care of itself. The final playoff push starts now.

I don’t even care what the Braves do in the playoffs at this point. I just want them to avoid a collapse that we’ll never hear the end of from ESPN etc. Sweep the Phillies please!

If both Cards & Braves sweep, then Braves are in cause they’re still 1 up. That said, I don’t see them beating Cliff Lee tonight & for some reason, that idiot Fredi G. is pitching D. Lowe tomorrow, so we can forget about that too. Basically, the Braves give up on any postseason aspirations as long as they keep Fredi & Larry Parrish around.

I feel much more comfortable with Delgado pitching than Lowe, and feel more confident that we possibly could do something against Oswalt than Lee. Really wished Fredi would start Lowe tonight and Delgado tomorrow, but we all know that won’t happen.

I don't know about that

Our team seems to pull it out against Lee more often then not based on my viewing of games not actual stats. I mean I remember at the beginning of the season he recorded a career high in strikeouts and we still won the game so hopefully wee can work some magic tonite.

STL/HOU stats to make you feel better

- The Cardinals are facing Wandy Rodriguez tonight. Rodriguez is 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA in September. He’s got a 19:3 K:BB ratio.

- Jaime Garcia is his opponent tonight. Garcia has never beaten the Astros. In his career, he’s 0-3 with a 5.91 ERA against the Astros. Astros opponents hit .341 off him. This season, he’s 0-2 with a 5.51 ERA against the Astros, with them hitting .318 against him.

- Tuesday’s starter for the Astros, Henry Sosa, has allowed three or less earned runs in five of his last six starts.

- Wednesday’s starter for the Astros, Brett Myers, is a candidate for NL Pitcher of the Month in September. In his last six starts, Myers is 4-0 with a 1.41 ERA. He owns a 31:6 K:BB ratio and opponents are only hitting .180 against him in that stretch.

- The Cardinals only scored 6 runs during the entire Cubs series and were actually outscored 8-6. Two runs were gifts from Carlos Marmol, two more runs were scored on sacrifice plays by their pitchers, the other two were solo home runs (Molina and Furcal).

- Tony La Russa has used Jason Motte the last two games, so he’d likely be unavailable or tired tonight if he used him again. Motte’s pitched in 11 of the last 17 games.

They’ll probably get through two turns in the order before Charlie starts plugging in the bench.

I also don’t expect Lee to go longer than 5 innings. That’s 4 guaranteed innings against the Phillies bullpen, which has been laughable lately. Bastardo and Stutes have totally fallen apart in September. Lidge is walking more people than Marmol.

by AmgineRmEht on Sep 26, 2011 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I could definitely see him going 6

And frankly, Cholly is kind of weird about his aces, and seems to think they are immune to injuries. It’s not out of the question Lee would be allowed to start the 8th if he’s rolling (even though that would be a bad decision from the Phillies’ point of view).

by SS451 on Sep 26, 2011 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

KEY TO GAME

PATIENCE. I will scream bloody murder tonight if we start letting Lee have 8 and 11 pitch innings like we did last time we saw him. Even if he gets the Braves 1-2-3 in an inning, I want to see pitches taken, foul balls hit, and smart, composed hitting.

On a related note, kiss my ass Parrish.

by crimsonqueen9 on Sep 26, 2011 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

If only...

That were a good strategy against Lee. He doesn’t throw balls, so swinging is the way to beat him.

If you think standing up there and taking pitches against a guy that has had a < 2 BB/9 since 2008 (2.16 BB/9 for his career) is a good strategy, I never want to hear you talk about bad managing.

Phillies are playing their A lineup again today

And presumably their starters will stay on the field unless it turns into a blowout either way. Best we can hope for is maybe backups starting on Wednesday, or if not that, then maybe half-days from some of their starters.

I really wish things hadn’t gotten to this point. I’d have been just fine with a nice, early clinch and a relaxing coast into the postseason. If the Braves blow this lead, it’s going to poison my memories of this season, and make me much less eager for baseball to return in the spring.

Cardinals must go 2-1 to win NL Wild Card; 1-2 to force tiebreaker

If there is a tiebreaker, it would be held in St. Louis on Thursday, September 29. The pitching probables are Brandon Beachy vs. Kyle Lohse.

I'm feeling a tiebreaker in my bones

I guess so long as the Braves won it, I’d be ok…although they would probably be in very bad shape, pitching wise, and would have a quick and sad first round exit.

Here’s a question for everyone: would you rather Braves blow the lead in the regular season and let the Cards in with no playoff, or get a one-game playoff, but lose that? I think I’d rather see them get a one-game playoff, even if they lose it. One more day of excitement before the long, dreary offseason.

Fredi’s line-up (for the next 3 nights) lowers it to 36%.

And I’m not even one of the “up in arms, uber-crazy line-up people.” But this is mindless.

Keep running it out there until you can’t run it anymore, Fred.

I’m usually a critic of Freddi’s line up, but I’m not sure what there is to complain about today. Maybe you swap Prado and Diaz but I don’t expect that would make all that much difference.

Whether you bat Prado 2nd, or lower in the order, is all the difference it takes. It’s a mental thing. And we’re screwed.

Prado should be hitting 6th, at the highest right now. He was doing better there, and to Chipper (based on his I am not a table setter comments) and Fredi, that meant it was time to put him back to hitting 2nd where he’s once again not doing anything.

If they would just lower Prado, I’d feel a lot more confident.

2. most people would rather root for the rays as underdogs than cardinals

I’m sure the calls for his head will begin if/when this happens, and I wouldn’t blame them. I’m not 100% sure that I’d be on board for him being fired, but as for Parrish, yeah, he can leave, like…before the game tonight. Hell, mvhs or TL2 can go be the hitting coach for all I care. Anybody is better than Parrish.

Not all bad news, I can’t imagine that Lee comes back in after a delay, which brings it to the bullpen more quickly. In the mean time we have a couple of unused starters who can go in and basically make a short start during the second part of the game.

it's the crackhead weather.com computer saying that

If it so much as sees a pigeon pissing it says there’s an 85% chance of rain for the whole metro area. There’s about a 50% chance of storms in the “real” forecast and if you actually bother to look at the radar, you’ll see a line of them slowly moving into NW GA. If anything, we might face rain late in the game, not a delay to start.

So yea, uh, let’s score early and often, mkay?

all year we have followed our braves, cheered for them, swore at them and just sometimes shook our head, but one thing is for sure….you will not see these braves go down without a fight. They have come too far this year just to give up now. It may seem as if we have been playing lifeless this month, and quite frankly, how can one argue. But I do know one thing, we are back at home and what a better way to celebrate than in front of our fans and these pesky Phillies. Our lineup starts fresh tonight…no thinking of the past, just three games, three games to send us into the playoffs. lets jump on lee early and often. Be patient and just let the game come to you. Don’t press and play Atlanta Braves baseball. if there ever was a time to start a winning streak and gain momentum, now is the time. We need to pull out all stops, this is for the playoffs, lets have some legends born tonight. GO BRAVOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Playoff really starts tonight. Room for margin is gone (I really don’t want to see the Braves travel to St. Louis for an one game playoff on Thursday) so the team now really need to get it done.

Alright, so here we are. At the end of the marathon baseball season with 3 games deciding our fate and either validating or undermining over half a year of work. It’s terrible that it’s come down to this, but we have to win. Each game here is a must win and it starts tonight.

We’re gathered here today to witness YOUR miracle. We are in desperate times father, we have gone astray. Lord we ask you to lay your hands upon all the braves players; lord if you don’t mind please give all the Phillies and Cards players muscle cramps, explosive diarrhea and temporary blindness. And lastly lord please instill infinite speed and accuracy behind the braves bats so that every ball pitched helps braves cause. Unleash your judgement upon all who attempt to harm the braves, for it is a sin! In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Ghost, and Bobby Cox amen.

Its football season.

That being said Im a lifelong Saints fan down on the MS Gulf Coast and my experience with these kind of situations is always being let down.
Trends always come to an end, but its gotten to the point with this team in September that I dont expect anything positive.
Its not that I dont want it to happen, but my mind has been set up for disappointment, so I wait for it.

Prove me wrong, Bravos.

The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb

Remaking the paper bag already...

We CAN pull this out. Players just need to pull their heads out of the sand and get to work with some swagger, no more non-chalant stuff I have been hearing/seeing.

We hear a lot about Fredi and the team being “even-keeled” but we should reassess the value of that when the ship is upside down.

The team has made countless mental mistakes along with poor decisions from the bench.

That when compiled, probably would add up to around 10-15 wins, easily.
