Braves Blow Big Opportunity In Shutout Loss To Nationals

Bases loaded, no outs...you have to score.

That's exactly what the Braves didn't do in a gut-wrenching 3-0 loss to the Nationals.

The opportunity came in a scoreless tie in the third inning after David Ross singled and Nationals starter Ross Detwiler walked both Jack Wilson and Mike Minor with the top of the order behind them. Two shallow fly balls and a ground out later, the game was still tied.

The offense failing in the third inning led to a Wilson Ramos home run in the fourth; that was the only run Minor allowed in 4.2 innings. The Braves put together another scoring opportunity in the fifth with two runners in scoring position and only one out, but again failed.

Michael Morse hit a two-run homer in the seventh, sealing another Braves loss.

The only silver lining from the game was Kris Medlen's first game back from Tommy John surgery. He tossed a perfect eighth inning.

The top four hitters in the Braves lineup went 0 for 16 with five strikeouts.

The Wild Card lead is down to one heading to the final series of the season.

Fully agreed

This is not team that deserves to go to the playoffs. I could care less what they do against the Phillies although it seem pretty obvious that they’re done. Frank Wren has got some big decisions to make in the offseason, #1 involving whether or not he wants a capable hitting coach.

I am absolutely disgusted…

I still believe...

the Braves will find a way. The Phillies don’t want to play the surging Cards in a 5 game series. If the Braves win on Monday it becomes very difficult for the Cards.

The thing is this team isn’t good enough to make a playoff run. We have one starter capable of pitching past the 6th inning and the team can’t hit. I know the Cards pulled off a title a few years ago after limping into the playoffs, but there’s a reason why that team will always be remembered. That hardly ever happens. It’s the exception to the rule.

Here's the thing

The Phillies aren’t gonna let up because of the Cardinals, or any team. It won’t be a factor in that final series. They may decide to rest their starters, who knows? But who gets the WC won’t be a factor in their minds whatsoever.

This is absolutely sickening.

This team is flat, and it looks like that’s not going to change. Even when we win a game, we then continue our lackluster approach.

For those of you who still ‘believe,’ how do you really think this team will fare in the playoffs? Be honest with yourself. If we make the playoffs, great; but this isn’t the year. We’ll be out in 3 or 4. The Cardinals have a much better chance of beating the Phillies in the postseason than the Braves. This is my silver lining.

I just don’t get how this team cannot get any clutch hitting; it’s not that bad of an offense. What made me sick was after fouling off a bunt for strike three, Ross goes to the dugout, where he and Bourne laugh about it. That right there speaks volumes. What this team needs, if it hasn’t been done, is a good old fashioned ass chewing by Chipper or Fredi. Almost seems like this team is in denial that it’s on the verge of one of the major meltdowns in recent history…

Chipper is NOT a leader

When have you ever seen him get onto someone for anything? He’s even admitted that Smoltz was the leader when he was on the team and that after he left he “decided” it was time for him to take charge if he “had” to. Its pretty obvious he doesn’t want to be a leader. He’s a player not a leader. Just because you are the veteran on the team don’t mean you are a leader, and Chipper obviously ain’t a leader. Its even been said before that Prado was the leader on the team. The team’s not had a real good leader since Franco left, I believe many will agree with me on that.

If there are no changes, no consequences for players AND coaches, the answer to why this team doesn’t draw well should finally be clear, even to the bank of computers at Liberty Media which actually run the club.

Freddi, Parish, Prado, and Lowe should all be gone before next year.

Freddi is a shit manager. Parish makes me long for Pendleton to return.

Prado has almost no value as a player anymore. If he can’t hit .300 and draw walks he is useless. He’s not even a good utility player because he sucks on defense everywhere you put him.

His dWAR is .3 and that’s playing most of the time at one of the easier defensive positions.

The biggest reason I think he’s gone after the season though is money. Making $3.1M this year heading into his 2nd arb. year. Going to make more than he’s worth.

by jack dein on Sep 25, 2011 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Not this season he doesn’t. He’s hitting .263/.306/.386 with 12 Hr’s. His WAR right now is .8. He’s not even 1 full win above replacement. When he hits around his career numbers he is valuable but he has been terrible this year and I blame him for a lot of our problems. If I have to watch him try to sidecar a ball at 3B again I’m going to puke.

by jack dein on Sep 25, 2011 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely sign me up for getting rid of Parish and Lowe. If Wren can get a real power hitting outfielder in a trade for Prado, I’d welcome that too. I don’t care whether they fire Freddi or not because most of the junk he does every manager does.

by bloodgimp on Sep 25, 2011 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I was on Prado side

but now I wouldn’t mind Wren making an upgrade in LF because Prado just isn’t cutting it this year. LP should be fired because it seems like Chipper helps players turn it around more than he does. Fredi I’m sure is a great person but he makes so questionable decisions alot! Like killing our bullpen and yanking the young starters out so fast. This is really sad to watch

Tomahawk Chop The Competition

by deewill23 on Sep 25, 2011 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Basically I have the same opinions about Parrish & Fredi. Lowe is obviously awful. Prado, I feel, is just in a slump & while he may not be cutting it in the 2nd spot, he’s not consistently weak like the other 3. I’m not against the Braves upgrading in LF with Prado going back to spot starting at 3rd & super-utility, but the idea that if “he can’t hit .300 and draw walks he is useless” is completely absurd.

by bloodgimp on Sep 25, 2011 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

He is pretty much a average player that will be getting paid like an above average player next year. He isn’t a good defender. He doesn’t hit many homeruns, doesn’t drive in runs, doesn’t get on base enough, doesn’t steal bases. To be a starter on offense you have to be good at something, he simply isn’t.

My problem is that if he wasn’t a Braves no one would consider him an upgrade. He’s a easily replaceable player.

by jack dein on Sep 25, 2011 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

How quickly you forget.

By your “calculations,” most of the Braves shouldn’t be starters. AGAIN, Prado is having an off year & comparatively does not stand to make that much more next year. I’m not exactly sure why you’ve chosen to focus on him when the entire team is sucking it up right now, but regardless, placing him in the same category as Larry Parrish & Derek Lowe is absolutely ridiculous.

by bloodgimp on Sep 25, 2011 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah he’s having a down year, I get that, but he’s making $3.1M this year and will probably get to $5M next year. Is he worth that is the argument. I don’t think he is. I’ve always thought he was overrated. He’s not good at any one thing. He’s not really bad at anything either but he is replaceable.

The reason I’m keying in on him is that he has been bad all season. Unlike a lot of players who are in bad stretches most of them had some very good stretches also. He never did.

by jack dein on Sep 25, 2011 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

“he has been bad all season”

That’s simply not true. And you continue avoiding the same issue I have repeatedly brought up. Is Prado as bad as Derek Lowe? As you brought up, he’s making $3 mil whilie Lowe is making $15 mil. Well?

by bloodgimp on Sep 25, 2011 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

No he’s not as bad as Lowe. Lowe was a bad panic signing when it happened.

Prado had a good May but has either been hurt or bad since then. It’s just my opinion that he is a pretty easy player to replace.

I would not be surprised if he was traded this off season. I don’t think the team will non tender him.

On a side you ever notice how many people we stick in LF that fail in hitting their first season.

Now we are going against the best team in baseball who will be looking for momentum after a losing streak for the playoffs facing good pitchers and the Cardinas who has been hot the last several games are going against the worst team in the MLB in a hitters park for the best offense in the NL. In my opinion we have less chance to make it than the Cards do.

“I mean, they’re could be a little bit of pressure. But all the pressure’s on St. Louis, because if they don’t win, they can’t get in. Even if we do lose, they have to win. So that’s how I look at it, and I think that’s how everybody else looks at it, too."

this quote makes me wonder what exactly their mindset is right now

seems like they fully expect that they can just back their way in, instead of going out there and actually winning the wild card.

Braves face the best team in baseball

Cardinals face the worst team in baseball

I know we all knew that, but that kind of just hit me. Astonishing….

Braves did this to themselves. You can’t lose 2 out of 3 to the Mets, Marlins AND Nationals during the final 2 weeks and expect to get in. Braves did it to themselves, and they don’t even deserve to make the playoffs. Game 1 will be Lee against us. Fredi really needs to be smart how he pitches the first 2 games. I think you really have to pitch Lowe against Lee. I don’t have any confidence in Lowe, and Lee is almost automatic, especially against us. Delgado has pitched very nicely, I trust him a lot more, I would love to see him face Oswalt in the 2nd game. I know you never want to give up a game, but we have a legit chance the last two games over the first game. Fredi really needs to be wise about this…

Automatic?

The Phillies are 1-3 this season against the Braves in games started by Lee.

this braves team is immensely different than the team that took the field from May-August

not a single player on this team is anywhere near locked in right now. agon being out has been a lot bigger than anyone could have ever imagined

by Stephen M on Sep 25, 2011 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

last 10 games(even 1 game against braves) Lee is 7-1 and has allowed 2 ER or fewer in 9 of the 10 games. Only 1 game he allowed more than 2 ER, along with going 9 innings and allowing just 5 hits and no runs against us on september 5th. Fredi really needs to pitch Lowe in this game I think. We need every opportunity possible.

This is just a playoff tune-up since he will start Game 2 on Saturday

I really don’t think the Phillies want to face the Cardinals in the first round. The Cards are hot and they tore them up last weekend. The Phillies may not outright throw the games, but they definitely aren’t going to go as all-out as they did against the Cardinals last week. Especially considering what was said earlier about Wednesday’s game being a bullpen game.

by AmgineRmEht on Sep 25, 2011 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I did say this yesterday that if the Phillies are smart, they WON’T want to face the Cardinals and will do all they can to not face Cards first round. But, who knows with their manager, he may try to out think himself and be like “screw it, lets just win baby”, or something to that degree. Phillies would be wise to want Braves in playoffs, over Cards.

I think had the Phillies lost again today, they’d be desperate for just one win. But they creamed the Mets today. I think they’re satisfied.

by AmgineRmEht on Sep 25, 2011 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe, but I am not optimistic that we can beat the Phillies bench players and starters going 3-5 innings 2 out of 3 games. Couldn’t even win 2 out of 3 against Mets, Marlins or Nats, so who knows.

Cardinals face Brett Myers on Wednesday

Ever since a start in Colorado on August 22 when he gave up 7 runs in 5 innings, Myers has gone 4-0 with a 1.41 ERA in the 6 starts that followed. Opponents are only hitting .180 off him in that stretch and he has struck out 31 compared to only 6 walks.

The Astros are 5-1 in Myers’ last 6 starts.

Let's sweep the Phillies, get some momentum and go to the playoffs with some confidence

I still think we’ll make it, despite how badly we’ve been playing lately. There are guys on this team who aren’t going to let this collapse happen, and I’m sure Chipper is one of them.

Let’s win tomorrow and let the Astros try to help us. It’s not like the Cardinals looked that good against the Cubs. Needed a Marmol meltdown to avoid losing the series.

I agree that we do have hope, but what do you mean “aren’t going to let this collapse happen.” In large part it’s already happened. We went from a 8.5 game lead to a 1 game lead. It’s an almost historic collapse, and even if we do make the play-offs its pretty clear we folded in the last few weeks of the season.

Chipper needs to get some hits in scoring position (bases empty solo homers are acceptable also). That’s more important than any guarantees.

I just want to add that the Nationals are a terrible team with the motivation of a .500 season. While we did drop 2 out of 3, they would not have performed this way with something on the line.

You are correct to assess that we do not have the statistics, and you are right. The Nats have not finished above .500 since their re-inception. :)

What irritates me....

Is no one will even admit a) there is a problem and b) something must be done to fix it… fast.

People keep talking about Hanson and JJ, but the pitching is still good enough to win, especially against the <.500 teams. What is unacceptable is this offense. their approach and lack of ability to adjust is amazing.

by DonDraper on Sep 25, 2011 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

This team is way down from last year in walks, runs, On base percentage, etc. It is obvious that the Braves need to change hitting coaches before next year.

by JimH on Sep 25, 2011 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I definitely see no reason to re-sign Parrish. That said Uggla and Heyward should be better next year as they both saw big drops in BABIP this season. A full season with Bourn in CF should also be a big improvement over the likes of McLouth, Melky, and Shafer.

by redwards95 on Sep 25, 2011 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

ya, whether we make playoffs or not, Parrish best be gone. Thing is, you can argue this is a better offensive talent team than last year. Finally have a leadoff hitter, and Uggla second half has looked good. I would be ok with giving Fredi ONE more year to see what he can do, but if things don’t change, then he should be on the cutting board…

I found some positives in tonights loss

1. Medlen pitched a perfect inning with a K on 7 pitches.

2. O’Ventbrel is fully rested for this series in Philly

by drumzalicious on Sep 25, 2011 8:55 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

is Georgie hurt?

Why isn’t Constanza playing ahead of Diaz or Prado? He has been killing lefties since he came up, and the team played inspired baseball when he was in the regular line-up.

The team appears demoralized. Doesn’t Fredi Gonzalez have it in him to motivate players in a pennant race? Great coaches and managers have this ability. He sits there in the dugout stonefaced, we never even hear some much as an “attaboy, Chipper”, and in the post-game press interviews he spouts cliches and states the obvious.

I’m not expecting Vince Lombardi or John Wooden, but given the way things are going maybe he needs to get some of these guys ears burning. Guys with names like Lowe, Diaz, and Prado, for example, who have performed poorly as we’ve lost three straight series to mediocre teams down the stretch.

by JimK on Sep 25, 2011 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah I don't understand that at all.

Does he have it out for Heyward? He didn’t hesitate to put Georgie in there for him. But now? when Prado has clearly been an albatross in the 2 hole. I dont understand it

I’m just at the point of whatever happens, happens. If the Bravos don’t make the cut, I’ll still be a fan & thankful to them for another great season of Braves baseball. No matter what happens it’s been a successful season. We’ve seen some great performances from O’Ventbril & the core of our future starting pitching. We’ve got 2 contenders for the ROY in Freeman & Kimbrel.
Uggla emerging from his slump w/a vengence. Chipper fighting back from his knee surgery and contributing as he has. Both very inspirational. Never say die. The team is struggling now but looking back on the season they’ve given me my money’s worth. Do I want more? Sure. Who doesn’t want the season to continue as long as possible. What’s left? Winter? Gawd!!
I just can’t bring myself to start throwing players & coaches under the bus. Who am I? I don’t know these guys on a personal level. I don’t know their heart. I understand venting. I understand some of the back & forth is warranted & light-hearted banter & that’s o.k.. That’s what this site is for. Baseball discussion. But some of this stuff is over the top & just plain mean-spirited.
Please know I’m not trying to be judgmental here & apologize ahead of time if I come across that way. Just getting a little melancholy as the season winds down. This old boy is getting a little long in the tooth. Don’t know how many season’s the Lord has left for me. How ever many I have left, I know they will be spent as a Brave’s fan, no matter what happens this year. Go Braves. (p.s. this site is by far the best on SBN. A cut above the rest.)
