Florida Marlins at Atlanta Braves Series Preview
The Braves come back home after a miserable road trip that saw their lead in the Wild Card shrink to 4.5 games, suffering three-game sweeps in Philadelphia and St. Louis and losing eight of 11 overall. They welcome the Marlins into town, who have been officially eliminated from playoff contention and are reduced to playing the role of spoiler. That'll be tough against the Braves, as they've lost nine of 12 to them this year, including a couple of sweeps.

OFFENSE
The Marlins have hit .285 since September started (105/369, 33 XBH). Logan Morrison, Mike Stanton and Mike Cameron are all day-to-day with leg ailments, so Florida has had to use a makeshift outfield lately. An outfield of Emilio Bonifacio, Bryan Petersen and Greg Dobbs would certainly not be out of the ordinary in this series. Hanley Ramirez has been shut down the rest of the year, so expect to see many different names around the infield like Donnie Murphy and Jose Lopez.
Now that the rosters have expanded, the Marlins have debuted prized prospect Matt Dominguez; he is 4-for-11 in five games.
PITCHING
The Marlins are 6-4 in September with a 2.78 ERA, and have only allowed two home runs. Leo Nunez is unscored upon in his last five outings following three straight ugly appearances in August during which he blew two saves and allowed nine runs in 2.2 innings.
Nolasco's ERA has ballooned to its current state thanks to his last five outings: he's given up 26 runs, 11 in one start, in his last 28.1 innings with a 1-2 record. However, he's the only one of the three in the series to have a win against the Braves this year (1-0, 8 runs in 19 innings). Hand has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his 10 starts, but has lost 1-0 twice, most recently in his last start September 7 and again in his debut against the Braves June 7. As for Volstad, he's lost four straight decisions and the Marlins have lost his last six starts.
CURRENT BULLPEN
R - Leo Nunez (closer)
R - Jose Ceda
R - Steve Cishek
L - Michael Dunn
R - Chris Hatcher
R - Clay Hensley
R - Edward Mujica
R - Sandy Rosario
R - Brian Sanches
R - Ryan Webb
It's not time to panic. 4.5 games is still a good lead, but it's no secret what the Braves need to do in order to keep their Wild Card lead from diminishing any further.

On the bright side...
With the Braves needing wins against the Marlins, at least Uggla won’t be in a marlins uni hitting dingerz against Braves’ pitchers…
I love u Frank Wren

I wouldn't mind seeing
those 3 as our starters in the playoffs either….if we make it of course!

Not worried
In fact, I like the idea of three rookies taking the hill in all these games. Veteran guys can be rattled and over-thinking, going into dangerous series against teams notorious for playing spoiler, like the Marlins. But rookies, these guys are guys who don’t want to spend another year in AAA, and know that they have to prove themselves and win big games, so that they can improve their chances to be up with the big club, next year, for good. So I expect them to come out pitching their best, with little concern about playoffs and records, as much as they want to impress everyone and prove they belong.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
1st Round of the Playoffs
Anyone know what happens if the DBacks and Brewers have identical records at the end of the season?
Tie-breakers:
1) team with the best record head-to-head gets the higher seed.
2) the team with best overall record ignoring interleague play.
3) the team with best record in the final 81 regular season games ignoring interleague play.
4) the team with best record in the final 82 regular season games extending backward until the tie is broken. Interleague games are skipped and ignored.
The rules would change if the Cardinals or Giants went as the Wild Card. In that case, the first seed simply goes tobthe team without the Wild Card winner in their division.

Arizona would get the higher seed (and the right to play Atlanta) based on Rule #1 and their 4-3 season series edge.
I’ll go ahead and say (just for the record) that if any non-Braves squad happen to end up in the playoffs (sending us all off our respective building ledges), then Philly would open with them and Arizona would host the Brewers.

Not to place complete blame by any means...
But the Braves were 17-9 in August while Dan Uggla was earning NL Player of the Month honors. On this road trip (8 games) his slash line was something like .188/.281/.257 with 10 Ks while they went 2-6. Obviously he doesn’t pitch and his defense was fine, but you can see what the offense does when Uggla struggles.
I was the games Friday and Saturday nights in St. Louis and the best things I saw were Randall Delgado on Friday and Freddie Freeman on Saturday.
