Tommy Hanson Hit Hard In Braves Loss To Mets
This ranks up among one of Tommy Hanson's worst starts of his career.
Hanson gave up four home runs and couldn't get out of the fourth inning of Atlanta's 11-7 loss to the Mets. He fell behind early, allowing a first inning home run to Justin Turner and a run-scoring double to David Wright.
The offense gave Hanson the lead, putting five runs on the board in the third against Mets starter Jon Niese. Following a single and a walk, Freddie Freeman's single scored Michael Bourn and a groundout from Chipper Jones tied the game. David Ross delivered a two-run single and Jose Constanza drove in another run to give the Braves a 5-2 lead.
Unfortunately, Hanson couldn't keep the lead, giving two runs back on a Jason Bay home run in the third. In the fourth, he gave up a game-tying home run to Josh Thole. He then walked Jose Reyes and gave up Turner's second home run of the game. Hanson departed after only 3.1 innings, trailing 7-5.
Atlanta cut the lead to one in the seventh, but the Mets piled on more runs in the bottom of the inning. Following Angel Pagan's double leading off the inning, Scott Hairston drove him in with a single off George Sherrill. The Mets scored two off Sherrill in the inning and added one more in the eighth against Scott Proctor.
Dan Uggla hit a ninth-inning home run and extended his hitting streak to 27 games. Freddie Freeman extended his streak to 20.

Hanson wasn’t willing to use his shoulder as an excuse, but he also did not deny it is bothering him. #Braves
If his shoulder is bothering him again then he needs to speak up

Maybe. Hudson and Beachy can’t be the only ones winning this late in the season. Lowe has been crap, Jurrjens has struggled, now Hanson.
Twitter: @TAlmeyda
I wouldnt even say “now Hanson”. Hanson hasnt been good since the AS break. The entire starting staff has been well below average since the break except Huddy. Beachy had one dominate start since and the last one was good until he pulled a “Lowe” and broke down early.
Dont know whats wrong with them, but that combined with the offenses continued inability to hit consistently or stay healthy is quickly sinking our ship.
We are not a play-off team as we are currently playing. And I dont know if the return of Mac will be our saving grace.
The only good news is…..is that that the talent is all here (when healthy) to make a quick turn around and dominate. But we have been saying that ALL year.
Awesome...
It’s about time for injuries to take over our team while the Phillies run away with the division…Damn Phillies.

How much more rope does the training staff get to hang themselves?
They are working on Scott Proctor length now.
The Pirates are not going to trade Andrew McCutchen - please stop suggesting this.
I'm afraid this might be the Tommy Hanson of the second half.
I believe he hasn’t had a single good outing since the ASG.
Down 7-6 in the seventh inning and we send a middle reliever out for his third inning of work. O’Flaherty hasn’t pitched since Wednesday afternoon. But yeah, don’t send one of the best relievers in baseball out to the mound to keep the game close because we’re losing by one run.
Tommy Hanson gets smacked around the entire game and gives up his third home run to blow a 5-2 lead. Surely you’d think that would be it for him, right? But no, lets leave him out there some more to give up yet another home run.
And then we pinch-hit with Julio fucking Lugo for CMart with runners on second and third in the fifth. Honestly, we have a better chance of winning if we just let Martinez hit if Lugo is the alternative.
Such a waste of a Saturday night.

Yeah...
Fredi was the reason we lost this game…
Give me a break.
"Don't go ninja'n nobody that don't need ninja'n!" ~ Kung Fu Hillbilly.
It’s the manager’s job to put his players and team in the best situation to perform well.
Burning your long man after 0.2 innings for possibly the worst pinch-hitter in baseball, leaving a middle reliever in for his third inning of work and then bringing a guy who has notoriously gotten killed by right-handed batters when you have a much, much better option in the ’pen, and leaving a starter in the game after getting pounded each inning is not setting your players up for success.
Fredi didn’t lose this game, but it were his foolish decisions that killed us.

I get it...
But every recap for every game contains some level of Fredi bashing, not by you, but by others. CAC is even worse sometimes.
It’s a bit over the top.
Sometimes, one has to blame the players. If they are on the roster, they should perform. Period. That includes Proctor, Lugo, Varvaro, Homer the Brave, the bat boy, or anyone on the 25 man roster at the time. If they players are so terrible they cannot be trusted to do their job, then blame the person who makes the roster decisions.
Hell, if Fredi ignored all his “bad” players, many would bitch about the overuse of his best players. Oh wait, we get that, too.
There’s not a manager alive who manages/managed games perfectly: not Bobby Cox, not Tony LaRussa, not Charlie Manuel, not Joe Torre, and not Fredi Gonzalez.
Fredi’s now the designated scapegoat for all failures of this team.
We have the 2nd best record in the NL. Surely he’s doing something right. It’s odd: Fredi doesn’t get credit for our wins; however, he should take the blame for our losses? Why?
"Don't go ninja'n nobody that don't need ninja'n!" ~ Kung Fu Hillbilly.
To answer your last question, it’s pretty much how it’s been for the entirety of both professional and college sports; players win games, coaches lose them. That’s nothing new from fans.
I don’t like Fredi and question quite a few of moves, but I agree with you. He’s obviously doing something right. At the same time, though, you have to wonder how good we’d be if the simple, stupid, nightly mistakes weren’t being made.

Also
Don’t mistake my post for an absolute love of Fredi. I question many of his decisions.
In a game like this, there are many to blame!
Hopefully we’ll finally get to Gee and move past this stinker.

He really has no feel for the game, whatsoever. It’s almost like he’s striking the tents if we get past the 6th or so and are still behind.
"You feel really comfortable with Scotty Proctor in that situation to handle those guys." - Fredi Gonzalez
And who would you put in to hit there?
It’s so easy to criticize the manager from your couch. Who is available to bat in that situation? Heyward? Not the way he’s hitting lefties. Conrad? Not from the right side. I’ll take my chances with Lugo. With all the injuries, he was the best bench option. He’s even had a clutch hit of late.
As for the bullpen, CMart stays in in that situation if its not an rbi opp. It was. So you have to pinch-hit for him there. I’d love to see the banter on here if Fredi lets CMart hit in that situation. And I completely agree with not using O’Ventbrel in that game. He can’t pitch them every game. They already have close to the most innings in all of MLB. There’s 2 months of the season left. The other part of the pen is going to have to step up and perform.
The Braves played like crap. That’s the bottom line.
An ugly effort.
It would be nice if our solid hitting and exceptional pitching could sync up a little more often. Pitchers are really starting to exploit Freeman’s inside pitch susceptibility. I’m guessing he wants a dinger and that pitch just looks like something he can easily pull out of the park. He needs to learn to lay off. His strikeouts are certainly something to improve upon in upcoming seasons.
The Braves are young and talented, but have a ways to go. Hopefully we can shed Lowe in the off season or before the deadline in ‘12. Will Chipper call it a career after this season? I think it’s time, but that’s up to him. I’m still thinking we will move Jurrjens within the next year. Call it a hunch.
The Braves certainly aren’t at their best when pitching from behind.
Today’s game may have exposed a weakness in Freddie – the inside pitch. Hopefully, he can adjust to that really quick or he’ll see a lot of that if we make the playoffs.
it’s been his achilles’ heel so far this season…fortunately, most pitchers do make mistakes when they go inside so many don’t try to do that on a consistent basis

Nobody
Has anything to say about Chipper swinging at the first pitch three straight times? That’s something that really aggravated me, and the worst part is that it would always result in him saying something lackadaisical like about how the rain delay, or the moisture in the air, or creaky old knees, when it’s blatantly obvious that he’s in his “don’t really want to play but I need to set an example” modes, which I’d rather him just sit out when he’s feeling that way.
Instead, he’s swinging at first pitches, while Lucas Duda is having 10 pitch at-bats, Josh Thole is getting intentionally walked after hitting a homer, and Angel Pagan is nursing out walks. This was a bad loss on so many different levels.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Lots to Twatter going on tonight about that. It’s pretty ridiculous. He’s been doing it all season too.

Glad I'm not on twitter then
But it’s true, it has been going on all season. Coincidentally when there are delays, he’s fresh off the DL, or any other reason why he doesn’t really want to play. What makes him my all-time favorite Brave is often times his candor and brutal honesty, but if this is what we’re going to get out of him, I sure as hell think his interpretation of “still being capable of producing at a high-level” needs some re-evaluation. Otherwise, he’s being an anchor to the lineup.

Maybe Alex Gonzalez should sit down with him to talk about plate discipline
16 compared to 5. Nobody should ever see fewer pitches than Alex Gonzalez. Even pinch-hitters

Something nice from tonight's game:
Michael Bourn; 3-for-4, a walk and a stolen base. He’s been everything I imagined him to be. Now to just get our hitters back to drive him in.

Ha, hitters… we haven’t fielded a team of collective hitters all season. They scored plenty tonight but our pitchers are falling apart at the seams right now.
The Pirates are not going to trade Andrew McCutchen - please stop suggesting this.
Drop the "L" and it's a little more appropriate sometimes
PAyers, as in guys who show up to make their plate appearances, and nothing really else.

Just one of those games...
Unfortunately tonight’s game was a cluster but it’s not the first or the last time we are going to have one of these.
Our offense is much better now, our defense isn’t killing us but our starters are having some disturbing starts since the break.
I believe they will snap back from this performance but having several SPs failing this thine of the season is awfully worrisome.
Fredi makes mistakes but he’s done a very admirable job getting this team where they are…
We need to temper the doomsday stuff and channel some good thoughts in outer to keep the wild card lead. Let’s get them tomorrow guys! What ya say?
by Gjmoody on Aug 7, 2011 1:25 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Looks like we’re going to limp into the playoffs, just like last year. Despite how bad we look right now, I still think we’ll get the wild card. The problem is that we’ll be too beat up to do anything in the playoffs.
Our pitchers are hurting, and our best player is on the DL (No, I’m not referring to McLouth). Speaking of McLouth, we’ll miss him if we get into the postseason. He would have been a really nice bench bat.
Sometimes the stars aren’t aligned. Unless our health turns a complete 180 in the next few weeks, we’re in for a short postseason. Not being pessimistic, just realistic.
It’s way to premature to say this is a repeat of last season. Last year, it was the season ending injuries to Chipper and Prado (especially the later), follow by the loss of Wagner that really did the Braves in.
This year, everything is pointing to McCann and JJ getting back. Chipper also can/should pace himself to be healthy comes the playoffs. Even McLouth is a possibility to be back by the playoffs, not to mention a possible lift for the bullpen in Moylan (and maybe one of the AAA young studs).
For the couple of months, it’s all about holding on to a playoff berth and get healthy.

Its unfortunate...
But I dont think our pitching staff is as good as we thought it was in the beginning of the year. Dont get me wrong, we have one of the best, but our weaknesses have shown through. Our biggest issue is inefficiency. The starters dont pitch deep into games, hence the bullpen gets used up. And now just pass the half way point, the entire staff outside of Huddy is dragging. Ball speed has dropped for several guys, location issues are cropping up, and we have started giving lessons on how to serve up a home run.
I love our pitching staff, and it kills me to say this, but the Philly staff we are not. They are constantly pitching deep into games and going with complete games. Hamels got another one tonight against the Giants.
one of the 1st half's biggest surprise
was how the Braves pitching staff as a whole was matching that of Phillies’ vaunted staff. Despite things not going so well so far in the 2nd half, pitching-wise, the current personnel is capable of reaching that level again. We just need to hope that they are able to do that when it matters the most (down the stretch and into the playoffs).
by LEastCoastBears on Aug 7, 2011 1:36 AM EDT up reply actions
Hanson's velocity
Sure, his poor location tonight was his main undoing, but I’m starting to really get concerned about Hanson’s drop in velocity. Rather than keeping it around the mid 90s, Hanson is now mostly at 92 on his good days, and then sometimes in the 90s like today.
It wouldn’t be a concern if he was being like Maddux and dropping the velocity to gain control and movement. It’s a shoulder problem that is flaring up, which is bad.
The Pirates are not going to trade Andrew McCutchen - please stop suggesting this.
I agree...I know it may sound extreme...
but I say to the DL for Hanson. Send him now. Between Minor and Teheran and Delgado we can fill in for 3-4 starts from JJ and Hanson. Id rather sacrifice and continue to struggle a bit now, but get those guys right and hopefully pitching like their pre-Allstar game selves by Sept.
I don't understand why they continue to pitch if they are hurting.
They should be honest and tell their manager so they could go on DL if necessary. After several bad starts and costing the team much needed wins, we hear they are ailing. I have been optimistic but never been confident when Hanson’s on the mound even during the first half.
Because that’s the machismo mentality of pro-sports. If you’re physically capable of walking out on the field and going through the motions then you do it, lest the other players question your toughness or label you “soft”, even if you’re hampered to such a degree that being on the field actually hurts the team.
Q: If not us, who? If not now, when? A: The Batman. And "when you least expect it."
This is why I didn't want Tommy to get elected for the All-Star game.
I know its an honor and he would’ve pitched only an inning but he’s had enough issues with his shoulder. All rest is good rest.
The Pirates are not going to trade Andrew McCutchen - please stop suggesting this.
Offence is picking up and pitching is dropping
Just been one of those years. We can’t catch a break. I guess I’ll blame that on Fredi and global warming, since Lowe can’t pitch in hot weather see? Larry Parrish is doing a great job and I’m glad Uggla and AGon finally started to listen to him, if we’re lucky Chipper will too instead of asking his Dad for advice. McDowell needs to be fired because the pitching has gone south, that makes the most sense to me, doesn’t it to you? Ok I’m done with this ridiculous comment, but remember sometimes some of you don’t sound any different and you aren’t joking. I’m guilty of it too, just I sound more reasonable when I do it.

HOLY SHIT!
The Braves are a video game! And, as such, we should freak out everytime we lose! Oh my God! We had a manager who wanted to lessen the load on O’Ventrbrel and trust his staff?? No way!! What a loser! I can’t believe we just lost 1 game to the Mets!
IDIOTS. Listen, Tommy Hanson’s fastball was/is below average. It wasn’t even close to the 95 it has been when he’s been dominant. He left a lot of mediocre pitches over the plate and paid for it. But guess what? These things are fixable. However, every one of you douche bag fans who hate parity and believe we should win every game should go and suck a giant cock because you make this site unbearable. Cry about it, you bunch of pussies. We still haven’t had “optimalineup” since like 2 weeks in. We are what we are, stop bitching about it. I hate most of you.
agree
Thats why I don’t post a ton. The majority on here bitch 24/7 and expect way too much. Its the worst when the stat geeks go insane and say oh his OPS is ten points down from last year, he sucks, TRADE HIM OR DFA!!!!
We still hold the wild card so its all good for now. Look at some of the positives and step off the ledge folks

Are the overflow threads beign deleted now after the games?
I went to see any new comments after I left last night and it’s gone.
Not the first time that’s been the case of late.

No
They’re just being moved off the front page. The thing is that whichever author who creates it has to apply the Open Thread label on it, or else when it’s removed from the front page, it won’t be visible on the Open Threads section, and only available when seek out that particular author’s posts.

Thanks Roy, Scott created the overflow thread to this one, but it seems to be missing even when I click his list.
It’s not a big deal, it’s just not the first time the overflows seem to be gone. I was just curious if it was a new thing.
