Tomahawk Chops: Daily Atlanta Braves News Clippings For Thursday, August 18th
Your one-page daily morning overview of Atlanta Braves news:
Braves quotes after Wednesday loss to Giants | Atlanta Braves
Fredi Gonzalez, on Jurrjens: "I think his start got better after the second or third inning. His stuff got to a little crisper. I thought he got better, that’s why we kept running him out there. He came out of it good, Bubby [trainer Jeff Porter] just came in here and said he’s fine. The quad was good, everything was good, so we’ll go on to his next start."
Braves ink Helms to Minor League deal | braves.com: News
The Braves are going to give Wes Helms a chance to serve as the right-handed hitter they have been wanting to add to their bench. But Helms will first spend the next couple of weeks getting regular at-bats with Triple-A Gwinnett. Helms has signed a Minor League contract with the Braves and will report to Gwinnett on Saturday. He will likely remain in the Minors until Major League rosters expand in September. When the Marlins designated Helms for assignment Saturday, Dan Uggla said he felt the Braves should sign his former teammate and ignore the statistics he has produced this season. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez also expressed immediate interest in the veteran utility man.
Brock approves of Braves' return to speed game | braves.com: News
Hall of Famer Lou Brock mastered the art of stealing bases and frustrating pitchers with his speed during his career. So as Major League teams are now once again putting a greater value on speed, he certainly understands the value Michael Bourn and Jose Constanza have brought the Braves over the past couple of weeks.
The NL rookie of the year will be a Brave, but WHICH Brave? | Mark Bradley
Asked to name the Braves’ best rookie, Freeman said: "Craig Kimbrel. It’s obvious. He’s got 36 saves, and he leads the world in strikeouts [by a reliever]. He’s not just the best rookie reliever; he’s one of the best relievers in baseball." Asked to name the Braves’ best rookie, Kimbrel said: "Freddie." Why? "He’s an everyday player hitting .300 [or thereabouts]. He’s been carrying our team. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have had the [save] chances I’ve had."
Prospects Delgado, Vizcaino, proving future is bright | ajc.com
"You’ve got to give [GM] Frank [Wren] a lot of credit," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "He didn’t panic and didn’t give up those young pitchers for just anybody. We’ve got a player that’s going to help us win ballgames with [Michael] Bourn, and you still have something left for the future with those four players."
Chipper excited by Braves' young arms | braves.com: News
Chipper Jones playfully said he decided to play at least five more seasons after watching Randall Delgado and Arodys Vizcaino impress during Tuesday night's win over the Giants. But the Braves' veteran third baseman certainly was not joking when he started talking about the bright future the organization possesses with Julio Teheran, Delgado and Vizcaino standing as its top three pitching prospects.
Braves shrug off homer reaction by Giants' Ross | braves.com: News
After Ross' game-tying homer went 448 feet, the center fielder flipped his bat and skipped a step before going into his home run trot. Manger Fredi Gonzalez, who managed the outfielder when he was with the Marlins, said the skip is a "normal thing" for Ross. "I think the little skip gets his little legs going," he said, laughing. He later added, "If I had a problem with Cody Ross, I'd go take care of that stuff myself. I know where he lives."

and maybe start telling the guys to go out there every inning with the mentality that it’s the 9th.

The other team tries too, you know. I think every pitcher goes out there trying to keep runs off the board but its gonna happen. Linebrink’s 2 runs at the time seemed nail in the coffin, and not the difference in the ballgame.
Obviously, but…
RISP has given us problems all year long, against whomever.

He has been better, of late. Not good, but better.

Turns a mean double-play, too.

They’ve met, but Sea Bass isn’t a big fan of RISP.

He's a huge fan
that’s why he leaves them there.
It was a particularly small egg...thats why I asked.

Don’t like the Helms signing. The guy had 1 good year and and sucked for all the rest. The guy had power, but doesn’t anymore. He’s like an auto-out now. Don’t like it. I’d rather have McClouth/other callup.
Can’t believe we gave up so many runs from the Giants, but I guess they were due. At least we didn’t get shut down by some no name pitcher. Cain is very good. Plus, the lineup yesterday wasn’t the best.
And it's now my sig

I guess there had to be a game where Chipper, Freeman, and Mac all sucked.
That was it.
Now it’s out of the way.
The scariest thing, for most of the game, was…. it looked like our only run came from a bases-loaded (all-but-induced) walk. The rest of the time, he could just pitch around us. We got ourselves out.

At least the Dbacks lost. That’s a good thing, imo. We’re playing them next.

Official Braves Position On Cody Ross.
“If Cody wants to dance around home plate like a little Irish girl in Brian Wilson’s MLB Epic beard commercial, then that’s his buisness. We’re here to play baseball like men.”

The HR by Cody Ross tied the game. And in all fairness, if a guy hits a bomb like he did, I would admire it and just expect to duck when I came up to bat next time.
Exactly
He his an absolute bomb.
Also, he hit a pop up in his next PA and flung the bat aside in a similar manner after his blast. Granted, he didn’t do the electric slide down the base path. But still…
I was disappointed Fredi didn’t leave Delgado in to plunk the next batter.

Tonight's task doesn't get any easier
It would be more than nice to get a win and take the series tonight.
Seeing all those fly ball outs after we couldn’t get even one when we desperately needed it with a man on 3rd and less than 2 outs, was beyond frustrating to watch.
~ "The NL - where our pitchers do more than just play with their balls." ~
Not looking forward to Wes Helms getting a 40 man roster spot that could go to JJ Hoover, Tyler Pastornicky or some other deserving farm hand.
"First!"...Who gives a damn if you are first
Who knows if he will still be up when 9/1 comes?
Cain fooled the heck out of Freeman last night. 3 strikes on 3 balls with the bases loaded.
Cain got Chipper good, as well. That second swing on the low and way outside ball set Chipper up perfectly for the next one being low and on the outside of the plate.
Good pitching by Cain.
I bet his wife was at home raising a little Cain.
I heard she raises a very little Cain..

"Welcome to the show, Brandon Beachy. I think you’re going to stay a while."
Not sure...
if Hanson came back on fire, it’d be hard to go against him. But a hot month from Lowe or Jurrjens or Beachy could vault them to the top spot. I doubt Beach, but we haven’t had a surefire, can’t miss #1 all year like Huddy last year.
