San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves Series Preview: Wild Card Battle

The Braves will try to get back on track this week in a four-game series with the San Francisco Giants. After a five-game winning streak, the Braves have lost two in a row while the Giants have won their last two, cutting Atlanta's Wild Card lead to four games. The Giants return to Atlanta for the first time since last year's Division Series.

The Braves went to San Francisco earlier this season and swept a three-game series from the Giants. Another sweep, while certainly welcome, could be difficult to pull off.

OFFENSE

The offense continues to be the team's biggest weakness. In the 29 games since the All-Star Break, they've scored more than three runs only nine times and have a 14-15 record in that span, falling out of first place in the NL West in the process. They've also managed to set a rather awkward record, hitting 21 straight solo home runs before a two-run homer Sunday put an end to that. For the season, the Giants are hitting .241 as a team with a .303 OBP. They've hit 81 home runs as a team with Pablo Sandoval leading the team with 14 of them; he and Aubrey Huff (11 HR) are the only hitters with more than nine. Huff also leads the team with 52 RBI.

To alleviate their offensive woes, the Giants traded for Carlos Beltran and Jeff Keppinger. So far, Keppinger has hit .276 in 23 games and Beltran .244 in 11 games with a double and two triples, but Beltran hasn't played since August 7 with a strained wrist and may possibly see the DL. They also traded for Orlando Cabrera when Miguel Tejada was placed on the DL. Eli Whiteside and Chris Stewart have split time behind the plate in the absence of Buster Posey.

MLB OFFENSE RANKS (out of 30 teams)

Batting avg.: .241 (27th)
OBP: .303 (29th)
Slugging: .361 (26th)
OPS: .664 (28th)
HR: 81 (23rd)
Runs: 416 (29th)

PITCHING

It's no surprise that the Giants have done most of their winning with pitching. They enter the series with MLB's second-best ERA at 3.15. So far in August, they're 5-8 despite a 3.26 ERA. Their bullpen has been the best in all of MLB, posting a 2.91 ERA. Brian Wilson's 2.72 ERA is a bit high for a closer, but he's still recorded 35 saves, second in the NL to some rookie named Kimbrel...

CURRENT BULLPEN

R - Brian Wilson (closer)
L - Jeremy Affeldt
R - Santiago Casilla
L - Javier Lopez
R - Guillermo Mota
R - Ramon Ramirez
R - Sergio Romo

OUTLOOK

A good series will give the Braves a more comfortable lead in the Wild Card. Let's not even think about the alternative.

It largely has to do with our collective plate appraoch. Aside from a few guys, we collectively swing at way too many bad balls. Overly aggresive.

Guys don’t even know what “taking a walk” means, this year.

agreed. if they would just even get 10% more patient it would pay such dividends. I bet teams come in game planning for the Braves to help them out so even to throw a little kink in that would help a lot.

Hudson kills losing streaks so that bodes well for tonight’s game – especially since it is against the worst of the 4 starters the Giants are putting up – of course he is a lefty so there is that.

Game 2. hard to say what to expect from Delgado. Hopefully Hudson can go deep tonight just in case the bullpen is needed tomorrow.

Games 3 and 4 are also unknowns. Hard to know what to expect out of JJ after coming off the DL when he hasn’t had any rehab starts. if he is back to pre-ASG quality (or even 75%) then that should be a good matchup for the Braves.

a series win would be awesome, but at least get the split so the WC lead doesn’t change.

Bumgartner isn't the worst of the four pitchers.

Sanchez is this year, easily. Bumgartner has been unlucky. Sanchez has walked way too many.

Phillies playing Dbacks this week....

So, now, you either have 2 options….

1. crawl into a corner, shaking back and forth, hoping that nobody wins any of their games, or
2. hope that the Dbacks get swept

Again, class, you have to think “big picture,” here. Do we want to make the playoffs via any means necessary, or don’t we?

what about our series?

D-Backs get swept and we split? then you have a tie out west with both teams 4 games behind the Braves.

Win it.

Phillies get swept and we split is a great scenario for us. We pick up ground on the Phils and the DBacks pad their division lead over the Gints. The more distance between those two (AZ and SF) effectively reduces the number of teams chasing the wildcard. Win Win for the good guys.

This

I don’t know why everyone thinks the D-Backs are the WC contender. They are on a tear, already lead the west, and the Giants are slipping. With a little help from the Baseball gods, the Braves will help continue the Giants slide, so always root against the phillies, the D-Backs at this point are going to win the west.

I hate to say it, but I'd be okay with a 2-2 split.

Winning three of four would be great, but I’ll take the split. Pisses me off to no end that the Braves couldn’t win 2-3 from the Cubs after winning game one and having a four-run lead in game three.

Tough series, although the game Friday was one of the better games I’ve ever been to. I’m surprised how nobody else noticed how big of a bomb it was that Pena hit yesterday, I mean that defines a moonshit!

Extremely important 7 games coming up 5/7 would be awesome…Delgado over Teheran?

If Minor is staying up despite the return of Jurrjens does this mean one and done for Delgado or is something else happening?

Hanson is on the DL… JJ is barely back; gotta keep enough arms around in case something else breaks.

For both revenge for last year AND Wild Card ramification

it would be great to take 3 out of 4 here…especially after the Braves’ hiccups this weekend (not that anyone should care, but perhaps fortunately for the Braves, I’m also back home from Atlanta…despite starting off this year with a 4-2 records in games that I have attended in person this year (in DC, SD, PHI, NY, and PHI), the record for the last 6 games has been 1-5 (PHI, DC, and these last 3 in ATL)…
